I'd use a half bottle of 3% peroxide in place of the vinegar. Obviously don't mix the vinegar and peroxide lol, but I've seen the color look a lot more prominent with the use of peroxide.
I've also noticed that the olive drab UCP looks remarkably similar to CADPAT or that camo that Russia is currently using, in regards of color but the UCP is just a tad bit lighter.
Love the video. Keep being awesome Mr. Boonedockery.
Edit: You can also use unscented hairspray to darken the fabric and also give it somewhat NIR compliance.
Hope this is helpful for some of ya'll. Yee yee.

Russian EMR has a more mottled appearance to it. The pixels in EMR are more in loose groups rather than being connected like CADPAT or MARPAT.
For the greenish steppes that are common in Eastern Europe/Western Russia, it's a remarkably good pattern. It's heavily green dominant though, so not the best in autumn, but they have colorings for different seasons. Not sure how good the Chinese airsoft copies are under NIR, but if you're just looking for a good hunting set up and not actually going to war, I'll bet it would work just fine in the greener areas of the USA.

Do you apply the hairspray after everything? And for peroxide, what's the proper ratio to use? Sorry, I had to have missed the replacement value of the vinegar, and I'm unclear what size bottle you're referring to.

I absolutely loved the walnut color in the past episodes, man, that blends in perfect with dirt or brown leaves!. Now theres other colors ive researched on the Pantone scale which I've never seen used before like Navy green, hex#35530a, or maybe a grass green and walnut combo. perhaps you could one day try to test it out using surplus ACU as a canvas for that. its hard to find the ultimate camo.

Excellent video. I picked up the entire rifleman's kit for 99 bucks Canadian. Patrol pack, vest, waist bag and eight pouches. I mixed up various small batches of green, brown and a little black and it worked perfectly. I like that everything is muted earth tones and not too matchy matchy. I've been doing 10km hikes with 30lbs for the past month with the pack. It's one of the most comfortable packs I've ever worn.

Great job and video. Many thanks. It will hold up for some time… we did it to gear before going on deployment to Iraq. You can further “touch up” your gear by just hitting it with appropriate colors of a good spray paint. The paint won’t be as permanent but as it “wears” it actually does a better and better job. But if done right it will really help to “break up” the outlines and you can easily match the paint to the specific environment you’re going to be operating in.

    • @jastrapper190
      @jastrapper190 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

The spray paint will also work very well and be a fairly durable covering for the plastic buckles/snaps/zippers. It will almost permanently bond to the plastic if it’s a good paint and temp and the surface is clean.

I wish I had seen this earlier. I used to live in Florida and Washington, so green made sense back then, but now that I'm in central/southern California, the brown of dead brush and rocky areas makes more sense. In the past, I had spray painted my gear but noticed it made it heavier and stiff like a pair of thick wranglers.

Love this video! It sure was a lot of fun tagging along for your dye experiment. And your undeniable enthusiasm for tint tinkering makes it that much more enjoyable to watch. I have quite a bit of surplus gear in the digital doody pattern. It’s inexpensive, plentiful and you can’t beat the quality! Have always thought about dying it, but frankly did have the guts to pull the trigger on possibly making it inadvertently uglier. But NOW I’m motivated! Still can’t decide which if the two colors I like best. Thought it was Olive Drab. Then before long I began preferring the Coyote Brown. Now I’m stuck in analysis paralysis! 🤣

Anything is better than UCP! I actually really like the way coyote brown turned out with some of the greens still coming thru the pattern. My environment is mostly deciduous although there are some cone bearing trees mixed about as well as poplar saplings and waist high undergrowth. I would take either one of these dyed versions over the UCP, but imo the coyote brown looks to be the best for my environment and more of a spring to fall option during the non-snowy months. I recently picked up a rifleman kit as well as a few sets of ACUs all in the UCP and I will be experimenting with rit apple green and taupe, may even try to do some sort of tie dye with the two colors mainly on the ACUs, and a mix match with the rifleman’s kit. I will probably document the process and if it goes well I should probably upload the results. Tie dye ucp acu and mismatch rifleman kit with rit apple green and taupe. Your videos have been tremendously helpful informative and inspiring. After seeing your results I’m expecting a color somewhere in between the olive drab and coyote brown if I were to mix the apple green and taupe. There’s only one way to find out…
    Cheers

Around 15:50 it looks like your Coyote Brown bucket sprung a leak and dumped camo dye all on your driveway. Now the mail man is never gonna find your house again!
I'm definitely sticking around to see how these look in the woods in summertime in your temperate climate. Not too many woods in my part of the country. The woods we do have are in the mountains and are much more sparse compared to those East of the Mississippi. MARPAT and Multicam are actually great choices for my more alpine-like woods. I live down in the Mojave desert though, so all these cool green patterns are near to see but I'll never get to use them unless I move.
If you want a decently durable tape to put on, look for Gaffer's Tape. It's non-reflective, which is useful since it started life as a theatrical product. Comes in a bunch of different colors but the most common ones are black, blue, grey, brown and white. You can also get it in bright colors for marking things. It's a similar to Duct tape but its a fabric tape with a synthetic adhesive that bonds strong but is also removable without leaving residue. You can tear it by hand but you can also cut it easily with a blade to leave clean edges if that's important. Stands up to different temperatures pretty well. Don't let the roll get wet though or else it becomes a nightmare to peel off the roll. Like most tapes, its best to keep it indoors until you're ready to use it so it doesn't degrade on the roll.

I got her rollin about 160° for 15 mins, stirred in the gen 1 gortex acu jacket for 15 mins, covered her up and let her sit about 4hrs with heat off. Along with an acu canteen pouch. After 4 hours appears to be nice and dark but somehow I melted some bottom areas of the gortex coat. The canteen pouch even wet, doesnt look a bit different. Weird indeed. Its gonna soak over night.
