I have been using a 110ltr Bergans Alpinist 3095 QSS since early 2005. I have carried it all over the world, in all types of climates and environments, from the Arctic to the Brazilian jungles. It truly is an amazing backpack. Usually, the only people that knock them have never owned one. When moving between countries I carried an 18ltr Bergans Nordkapp Jnr which clips to the shoulder straps and waste band and sits comfortably on your chest. This Granite Gear pack is the closest a backpack has come to mine. Thank you for this great review
I have a short torso as well. The adjustability of the skeletal structure on this is amazing. It can hold more than I ever could carry in my prime. These days, I could pack more puffy and fluffy stuff!
Looking great the pack. Thank you for showing it. The thing with the sternum strap you mentioned really almost made me go crazy.😉 I was staring at that twisted strap and always thought come on, now... untwist that strap... 😅
I own 2 of these packs. The first Granite Gear Chief Patrol Pack I bought in 2017 for $160 but it included a new Gerber M&P 600 multi tool, a Stream light Military angle Light and new ESS Military issue ballistic glasses.
Thank you for the review of this pack, I watched this vid awhile ago & mine arrived brand new in multi cam & I was impressed by the quality & features of this pack. It is comfortable, has amazing access & an outrageous amount of molle webbing. As stated in the review it can be compressed to a smaller form factor because of the compression straps, massive room when fully adjusted.
Bought this off your recommendation a few months ago-- think I paid 250 bucks for it. I use it as my principle search pack these days, and it's everything you said it would be. It's well-built, easy to refit, and indestructible. If you buy one, make sure to carry a Flathead screwdriver or the equivalent as the screws that hold the shoulder straps in like to slowly back out. Thanks for everything you do!
I picked up an ILBE Gen 2 pack after your review and have used it for a couple of years now. And, as a matter of fact, a Litefighter 1 tent was delivered by UPS today. The winter solo trip sold me on it. Looking forward to watching the desert video. Cheers dude.🤙
This pack shows something GG has always been known for, an awesome amount of compression to really lock down loads and make a pack more flexible by being able to essentially shrink a pack. Which reminds me, sometime ago you did a first impressions of the GG Grown 2 60. Is there a review forth coming?
Luke, Thank you for the recommendation of this GG Chief Patrol Pack. In June 2022 I recently purchased one for $250 tax included and most used ones are selling on eBay for $230 plus $35 in tax. Looking forward to outfitting it.
Great review. Definitely much better than the Molle 2 large ruck I am issued to say the least. eBay has them from 150.00 to around 300.00 it appears. May have to buy me a little present... lol
I got one one ebay about two years ago for about 60 bucks and is fantastic. I was in the USMC and I had experienced the ilbe and filbe pack this is a better pack because of the frame I just wish it still had extrier side pockets for naglenes
The shoulder padding is velcro backed and removable to accommodate body armor. And an extra lumbar pad is also added for better load transfer. Another cool feature of this pack! But maybe your pack didn't come with the extra lumbar pad? Not really a big deal anyways unless your wearing body armor. Awesome pack man! I hope it serves you well. Stay safe! Hike on!
I have had my Granite Gear CHIEF Pack since 2014 and I love it! It has taken use and abuse and still keeps on going! They are getting incredibly hard to get (I was lucky to get mine in Multicam and for only $400). Great video and this pack does not get anywhere near the attention it should!
@@clayguinard3651 Sorry for the delay, been a busy last month. I specifically use mine as my main rucksack when I go out the field or decide to get lost in the woods for a week or more.
Granite Gear, Arcteryx, Gregory All make great packs and military packs. My 1st real purchase of a pack was the Gregory Denali Pro back In 2001. The frame and suspension was out of this world. Memory foam padded 5500 cu in.
Good pack. I have the old ILBE Recon pack that is 90L. This one you're showcasing looks great for that ability to size it as exactly needed but I do maximize my 90L exactly for it's purpose but I could see the benefit of this one for scaling. It reminds me of the Savotta / Varuseteleka recon pack that is totally scalability.
My go to for the last 6+ years.... Its got a lot of miles on it and flights to Alaska and the dirty pack only looks better with times. The only downside is sometimes all the extra things get caught up on belts and stuff at the airport so before letting them take the pack, I will tighten up all the odds and ends on it and make sure there isn't anything sticking out, pretty standard for bags just a lot more snag points for traveling then a standard pack.
Hi Luke. Funny you mentioned about a twisted strap. I noticed it and thought, Luke wouldn’t wear it like that. Then you added your comment. Haha. It does look like a well thought out system. Like you said as comfortable as military packs go. Although I do like all the options it has. Thanks. Be safe and well my friend.
The absolute best piece of military gear I was issued was that green Polartec fleece (which I see you wearing as well). So good I bought my own to keep after I got out

I’m excited for more military surplus videos coming out this year. Thanks for gear review videos. It helps me what to buy or not and is fun to watch them.
Cool review. JUST ordered my Savotta Jaakari L in Finn Camo and it's on its way, otherwise I'd consider a Granite Gear milsurp pack (retail too expensive if you go to their site). On a side note: I noticed the color Coyote Brown really blends well in the autumn and Spring woods!

Dude, perfect timing. I've been scouring around for a pack that'll work for me. While the ILBE and FILBE are close neither looked like it'd truly work for me, this does. On the other hand I couldn't find anything for under $300 with the shipping thats being charged. Oh well, its an investment in gear that I'm hoping will last for a long time.
Looks like the S.O.C. Bugout bags sold in almost all Clothing and Sales on Army bases, except on steroids. Looks interesting; I'd like to try one. Thanks for the video!
The USMC Pack (FILBE) is ajustable, not amazingly so but it is. You can ajust it for tall, regular, and short torso lengths. Videos are on the Marine Corps Systems Command TH-cam channel.
Hi! I've been watching your channel for a couple years now and love your work. I really feel the 'agenda free' mission! I'm an army veteran that's into emergency preparedness & this video just sealed the deal. If we are talking about pure survival/INCH bags, this is big enough to hold all that one would need; it's def big enough to hold all the gear the players on the survival show 'ALONE' would need at least (and more than I would need even while I was in the army). This size of course scales down to get home/bug out bags. The modularity and ability to cinch so much down is also a huge boon. But you know what really sold me? The coyote brown color (in conjunction with everything else). Brown, from what I can observe, is the best base/flat color for terms of concealment while allowing for one to be gray man; normies wear brown all the time. I bought a UCP MOLLE II rucksack and dyed it with Apple Green RIT die. It looks great & is functional but it also draws unwanted attention when training with it and the green stands out in winter and fall settings. I don't want to be known as 'that army guy' if an emergency pops off. The coyote brown though? Very gray man and from what we can tell from all the brown furred animals in nature - a great base color to offer concealment for all seasons. Thanks for the agenda free content you provide dude. Strength & honor.
great review. but for 55L 3 day assault ruck, i recommend and went with the Crossfire DG-3. Also a great pack, hope you get to check it out some time Luke!
Well, heck! I missed out on this pack. I bought a civilian Granite Gear Crown 2 60 liter backpack a few months ago. Several of my friends owned them and after borrowing one for a weekend jaunt I ordered one from an ebay source. Amazon wanted $200 and I got mine on sale for $159 and free shipping; I think the $159 price included the shipping costs. The quality of Granite Gear products is first rate.
I have a giant pack that weighs 7 lbs. I haven't used it since I found a pack that weights 3 lbs and I haven't used my 3 lb pack since I have 3 packs that weigh less than 2 lbs and one is 1 lb at 55litres. Even after putting my tent, mat, sleeping bag, stove and clothes it still doesn't weigh 7 lbs. I do have two gregories for sale though and maybe a Dueter. But if I need to carry a few thousand rounds of 556 i will give this some thought.
My favorite surplus item from last year was a 6 pack of new mercury thermometers from the 70’s. Gave several to family and friends. Those are hard to find
My uncle and i were psyched about this pack when it first became available. He ordered one in the AOR 2 camo. Which is essentially a green and black digital camo. AOR 1 and AOR 2 camo from what i understand were developed for special operations in the Navy that do island patrols and patrols is a wide range of other terrains. The Chief pack is made with a bunch of different (nylon) thickness materials. Placed in specific areas of the pack where durability is needed most and it also helps save on weight in other areas. My uncle has a long torso so he loved the overall fit of this pack i did not. This is a giant pack!! Around 5,500 cubic inches or 90 liters. So those of you who carry alot of bigger gear will have no problem with this pack. There is also like 6 grab handles on this pack i've never seen that many before. Alot of high quality clips and buckles too! Granite gear also made a jungle version of this pack when first offered to the military but they are rare as hens teeth!! Lol..If you like these kinda packs also check out TYR and their Huron packs. Very similar quality and designs. The only things i didn't like about this pack are the number of straps and the grab handles tend to rest against your neck while wearing it which was annoying. The size is the only other thing i didnt like. I wish they made one of the same design in a 45 liter or 3,000 cubic inches. But this pack definitely does what it was deigned for. Its large, lightweight and holds a ton with some good organization. Also comes in coyote brown and in multicam if you can find it. Granite gear is an awesome company!! I used their Blaze A.C 60 for years! Thanks for the review Luke!!
Have you seen the Catoma raid pack, 2800 in.? Same ownership and virtually the same design. Available retail and sometimes, rarely, on eBay. I have a recce chief for winter and the raid for summer
Love the videos Luke, as always. They're helping me get through a tough time as we mourn my mom's sudden passing. :) You referenced strap keepers - I was wondering if you have any recommendations about after-market ones I could buy for a backpack that didn't come with them? I'd hate to cut the straps in case I want to resell the pack, but I see a lot of junk on Amazon. Cheers, man.
Hey Luke , its good to see you reviewing a new ultimate backpack . It was your 'filbe vs molle ii' type of videos which introduced me and got me interested in your channel 👍
I miss my FILBE, had to throw it out after my apt flooded and the books I used for weight (I used it solely for a work out routine) were soaked and moldy and interior was just wretched. This is a good pack, but little pricey as I would only use it for the physical fitness routine. I got the FILBE very cheap from Gov't Surplus website that no longer exists for $65 due to sale.
A lot of times a designer will engineer the pack, but a contractor will end up building them. Happened with Arc'teryx, Mystery Ranch, Kelty, etc..., the one across the board standard being that they have to be made by American sub-contractors. Propper used to be one of the biggest out of Puerto Rico. Once the government removed production from PR, the problems started up with USGI rigs.
THANKS for the shout out Luke. So glad you approve of it. I love mine
You rock brother, thank you for putting this on my radar!

An alternative to this is the mountain warehouse 85 very similar just imo the civilian version
Where are the videos from the new adventure? Can't wait to see them.
Hey Luke , its good to see you reviewing a new ultimate backpack . It was your 'filbe vs molle ii' type of videos which introduced me and got me interested in your channel 👍
That is one sweet looking pack.
Looks like the pack I carried in the Marines.
I wonder if the side pouches open at the bottom for skis, rocket ammunition or a long rifle.
Granite Gear Chief Patrol Pack on their web site is listed for $989.95, NEW. Still a nice piece of gear. Best pack I have ever seen, and durable.
Great video👍 Thank you
I'm going to have to invest in this.
trying to decide between my ilbe with a nice frame fitted or one of these [ i am lucky enough to have both]
I like my ILBE and vanquest markhor 45 but looks like ill be hunting down another one lol
