    I found the tip about puffing out the cheeks really helpful - that combined with making lots of space in the mouth made a very noticeable difference. Thank you for that tip.

      Delighted to hear this Steve! Thank you for the feedback. This changed the way I played as well, I fought it for a long time and then did some experimentation and I realized I was making everything way more difficult than it needed to be. Flute should be easy, high notes as well. Best of luck and thanks for the comment!

      SO glad to hear that! It was an absolute game changer for me too! Takes some courage but if you can approach it with fun, it's less scary and more exciting. Congrats!

    Hi Angela,
    This has really helped Me as I have just started learning the Flute.
    Only using the Headjoint at the moment, with My palm over the end I could get a low note and high, but with no palm over the end I could only blow a low note.
    With this technique, I can now get both notes without the palm over the headjoint ! Thank You.
    Just got to practice this now, then add the rest of the Flute.
    Regards Paul.

    I went through a very difficult time last year with my flute. I had it overhauled by a flute specialist, and basically they stuffed it up, leading to a very rough year of straining my embouchure to get any sort of decent sound. (It's a pretty expensive procedure in Australia, and I was only able to afford it recently)
    As a result, I've been ironing out problems (specifically top octave F# and above) pitch and tone problems, but nothing was working.
    Anyway, I watched your video, and have been working on the exercises (specifically the puffy cheeks exercise) and there has been an almost immediate improvement in my top registers pitch and tone. Thankyou so much. I'll also be sure to pass this knowledge onto my peers and students :)

    That was so helpful! I was pinching to try to get high A and B, I get the A now without having to pinch, the B is kind of hard, it comes out occasionally but I'll work on it! Thank you so much!

      I'm so glad it helped, thank you for the feedback! I'll be mostly posting under my business, so if you want to follow that as well, I should be doing more videos soon. 3rd octave B can be kind of difficult, but remember, if you fight the flute you lose, so just relax and pretend like you're blowing out birthday candles, you can refine the air stream from there. Let me know how it goes!

    Hi Angela:
    Last six months have been struggle to learn how to play the flute again.I love to playing of my flute. I have play for many years. For what ever reason I stop playing for over 10 years. Last year I wanted to play. I try so hard. Well everything went wrong. The flute dry up. My fingers harden up. My lips just refused cooperate. Friends telling me is like riding a bicycle.... No, Playing a flute are not like riding a bicycle. There's a whole series of how to generate the air pressure. Delivering the air to the flute. And relax fingers and muscle memory. Its use to be, by put a little music it my head and play.
    Well I send my flute in for rebuilt. As the flute sitting in the shop. I purchasing a good Yamaha flute. It is so easy and nice to play until I got my old flute back. Then I realize the Yamaha turn out to be the worst instrument for me. It was bright and position. but not as musical. Its sounds like I join the matching band. Now I have my old flute/baby back. Yes it require more effort to play.But, it is Music, it is soft and delightful.....
    It's been one year. Your short lesson on how to play your high notes effortlessly was exactly what I needed. I Watch the lesson over and over. It took some time. But, I am playing again.
    Thank you so much Angela.Thank you for your give. God bless you.

    Hi Angela! That was of great help to me. I wear brackets and I am having such a hard time to play hight notes. I will keep practicing your ideas as I recognized myself when you mentioned the tensing of the mouth and lips. Do you have any tips for those of us who wear brackets? My treatment is intended to make my uper teeth go backwards, so it´s hard to let the air go in a straight line and not just anywhere around :S

    • @AngelaMcCuiston
      @AngelaMcCuiston  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Deborah - I understand! I had braces as well, but by the time I got them off, my tone had gotten BETTER with them than without, so fear not! The biggest pieces of advice I can tell you is to keep your mouth relaxed. When you pinch on the flute...you lose and the flute wins. You cannot "muscle out" notes on the flute, you have to use your air. Make sure you aren't pushing the flute into your teeth, but rather pushing out with your right thumb and in with your left hand, then just use your chin and pinky to stabilize. Have you tried puffing out your cheeks?

    • @deboraskinner
      @deboraskinner 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Angela! One thing I always do is pushing the flute towards me, that's one thing I have to improve. I just got my upper brackets taken out last week, and at least in my case it is getting easier to play higher notes. Puffing out my cheeks, has helped too, thank you for that advise! It is difficult to keep them puffed out but I guess it's just something I have to keep working on. Thank you again!

      Thanks for your concern. I would like to share my "small" history on flute: Because of pyorrhea about 32 years ago I lost all my teeth and I had to wear full dentures . For that reason I could not continue studying the flute: all my teachers and colleagues told me that having lost all my teeth had to study another instrument , piano or guitar, for example. Today, I'm 67 years old and since 7 months ago I have been traying again the breath and I've already managed to get to the lower notes. From now on I will try to get some skills in fingering , and so I am showing all the negative opinions I got in 1984 were wrong. It was just start from "zero". And now when I'm a very old man I realize all the time I have lost and all the joy I could not experience. (Please forgive my poor, ugly English because i'm a Spanish speaker).
