  • Should my flute be held parallel to the ground? The answer might surprise you! What about playing face-front to the audience? Who is that guy playing flute with Miss Piggy? And why is a picture of Nina's dog in this video anyway?????? Watch this mini masterclass for the answers to all these questions.

    In Hungary we are taught the tilted posture from the very beginning, I couldn't imagine playing my flute any other way. :)

      Read my post above, about the vertical line in the middle of your face: the flute must be perpendicular... if you keep perpendicular, then you can tilt wherever you want.

    Maybe that's why the fabulous Michael McGoldrick plays across his shoulder? The sound he gets is amazing, much to the dismay of other players who, even now, say that this shouldn't be done? Great video as always and you can hear the sound difference when you change the posture. :)

    I agree with your concept Nina. For me , it is always about how to get the best sound possible. Each student is different and I work with their individual posture needs.

    Doriot Anthony Dwyer once demonstrated in a master class how much the sound is affected by tilting the neck. That puts a kink in the air column. To keep the air column kink free, tilt from the upper body, not from the neck!

    I love your videos and should watch them more often! Atm I don't have a flute teacher (again! I don't seem to keep my teachers - it's not me, honest - either I move house or they do) so I think I would learn new things from your videos! Thanks for taking the time to produce them and help us learners out!

    Simply put folks: the flute must be perpendicular to a vertical line dividing your face, with of course, the embouchure, centered. Everything else, doesn't matter. As long as the flute is set like that (90 degress) then you can be sideways, lying, tilted, whatever (except underwater). How I figure that out ? Simply, I stood in front of a mirror and adjusted the posture until the notes were coming out with ease.
    Of course, when you become proficient, this is something that will be registered in your muscles and because you are proficient, you can compensate for small deviations.

    your so great my story is I had to pick an instrument for band and she told me to have it perfectly straight and I have very bad arm strength and its very hard for me thank you very much I should show her this so she can understand! I like how well you explain you are so awesome !

      Your arms will get stronger the more you play. I picked up my flute again after not playing it for almost 20 years and I was surprised how hard it was on my arms and back and my fingers.

    I've been playing for almost 15 Years and I do the slight left posture ever since I was 11, I think that's one reason I always had issues with marching band because I was told to keep my flute straight. I tried. I failed. My head naturally tilts to the left. xD

  • @jrbrook76
    @jrbrook76 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you for this. We all have different lips, teeth, some of us use a side embouchure....i always put ergonomics first and adjust headjoint position from there. This is great...I’ve always turned to the side, I guess as a natural response to what my lungs and shoulders wanted. Sometimes too even from the best flute makers the embouchure hole can be slightly skewed which definitely means the angle of the flute has to go with it

    Nina, way cool, that was the best example of diaphragmatic vibrato pulsing I've ever seen from an on line teacher . At around 6:00 we can see you cheek puffing. Strictly speaking I don't know if I'm to old to learn new tricks or not but I just can't do that. Though I can see it would be the only way to vibrato with a recorder or Native American type instrument.

    • @oscarrh8005

    Funny using Rampal as an example when his flute is tilted in a lower angle than his lips. Not saying that it isn't good advice to try to keep things in line (like James Galway for example).

      Its more resonant. when your cheeks puff out you are creating more space in your mouth. The more space you have in your oral cavity the more resonant your sound will be.

    • @jrbrook76
      @jrbrook76 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Tradarius Luckett yes! And I also feel that it aids in preventing tension in the embouchure and jaw, which only adds to a more beautiful sound

    • @nelidamolver6126
      @nelidamolver6126 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Come on. Dont learn from her. She inflates her cheeks. The vibrato comes alone like singing a tune that you really like. Let your emotions come with it and it will appear alone without learning how. Let it flow. Sing. If you want first. Do a vibrato singing a song. Trespass it to the flute. That's it. Practice. Nothing more than that but dont inflate your cheeks. Only if you have food inside your mouth.

    Hi Nina, what about Denis Bouriakov at the 2017 flute fair (it’s on TH-cam)playing La Campanella with the flute all the way to the left of his nose/lips?

    • @ninaflute
      @ninaflute  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      FLORIDA FLUTERY I watched the video and although I can’t get a close enough view to be sure, my experience tells me that he likely plays with what is often called a side or offset embouchure which is quite common although his may be a little further off of center than what you are used to seeing. The flute then must be aligned to wherever the opening of the lips are- even if it means the flute looks asymmetrical. Judging by his beautiful sound- he clearly has proper alignment. But I don’t like to speak for other flutists. He is a master of the craft so send him a message and ask him to discuss!

    Well, one size doesn't fit all, especially on wind instruments. Teachers that teach all their students the same way are just not good teachers, hence youtube lessons are mostly worthless unless this is addressed.

    Sorry i dont get why tou are infkating your cheeks at playing. I never did that and my vibrato feels comfortable and resonant and excellent. I never saw another flute player doing that. Your sound is a little airy for ny taste. Not a clean sound at all. Not a solid sound and you are playing with an expensive flute. Though i play with a Yamaha 225 S II i get a better sound. Sorry. Please anyone agreed with me???
