- In this video you will see me making a wooden spatula.
Seems that whatever wood I chose for this spatula wasn't the right kind, guess I'll have to find out what wood I need next time...

Great video, like how you show all the small things you need to do to run your tools properly
Thank you :)
Incredible good video. Great use of tooling and woodworking technique! Thanks!!!!!!
+mike kearsley Thank you! :D
Nice woodworking project. I've used vegetable oil and I've tried mineral oil. The mineral oil will not go rancid.
Doug Jones Thank you! :) I'll give mineral oil a go, next time I make some food related project.
Nice work! Glad I'm not the only one that does the oil bag trick.
Thank you! :) The oil bag trick is nice & simple for smaller projects, gets the wood nicely oiled. :)
I don't care what kind of wood you use, that was great!
Thanks for that! ;)
Wow ! That is brilliant !! What a creativity 👏👏👏
Marro Rosy Thanks! :D
Well done! 👍
Thank you! :)
👌nice work 💪
Thank you very much!
Nicely done. Music is cool
zing913945 thanks
That turned out very nice. I was wondering whether you could have re-sawed that wood initially on edge to have enough for two spatulas. No matter the one came out fine!
+woodstoney Resawing with my bandsaw & getting a good result is hard, I always have to plane it afterwords. Splitting the wood with the table saw would remove to much material so that wouldn't work either. But yes, I could have made two spatulas if I had a better technique or bandsaw. :)
Try using a fence with your Bandsaw to rip straight
+Martin stewart I've tried using a fence but I can't figure out how to get my bandsaw to cut straight. I've tried to adjust it but without luck.
It's easier to rip but I use a belt sander to sand it smooth. I don't usually even use the jointer you can get a pretty straight finish with the belt sander. I also use a disc sander to do the end grain.
Nice sir
nicely done sir, Thanks for sharing and have a blessed week. Enjoyed your video and want to see more from your channel so we subbed you as well. Keep up the fun work.
Heartland Outdoor Living Thank you, really appreciate your comment! :)
Well done
Noor Ali Thank you :)
what kind of wood you think would be best to make wooden spatulas
Ray Heinrich I would chose Cherry or Oak but Maple, Ash or Birch would also work. :)
Stay away from pine it rots and falls apart when it gets wet
Nice little project. What kind of oil did you out on it and how long did you leave it dry?
For this project I used regular cooking oil and I left it to dry just a few minutes.
:)
+creativeobsin I would suggest using food grade mineral oil. You can get it at your local pharmacy. It won't go rancid like vegetable oil.
Aloha, I'm a budget woodworker can you recommend a cost friendly carving kit? Love this spatula!
If you're on a budget I recommend you do some research on carving and the tools themselves. In order to see what you really need & what kind of carvings you're going to do.
@@creativeobsin thank you, it will be mainly for spoons and kitchen utensils..
I want to build one for camping. What wood did you finally settle on?
I suggest you use oak or similar kinds of wood.
What kind of wood did you use? THANKS
I actually have no idea what kind of wood it is, whatever wood I used still works to this day though!
What do I do if I get it wet and the grains pop up? What would you suggest?
Either sand & oil with food safe oil or buy a commercially made product.
Or get it wet after sanding, let the grain pop. After drying, resand, put on finishing oil and then the grain won’t pop when it gets wet again.
jbn0613 thanks i have fixed the problem now
What type of bit did you use the second time you drilled hole in handle?
The tool itself is called a countersink, but the one I used in the video is a vintage countersink wich used to have a square taper at the end that I cut off to be able to use it with my drill press. Here is an image of that type - goo.gl/images/pKusUu Today they have been replaced by tools suited for modern machines, here is an image of that type - goo.gl/images/XT3FdY
Cowboys used mesquite probably,nice work
Never heard of that, doesn't seam to have a Swedish translation either so I have no idea what kind of wood that is & thank you! :)
I use mesquite almost exclusively. I run a small shop in South Texas specializing in mesquite utensils. It is beautiful wood and holds up very well. Beautiful work by the way.
Did you start with 1" thick piece or was that 3/4"? I have similar sized scraps that I'd love to try to do this but I don't have much in the 1" department.
Difficult to say 5 years later, it looks like a 20mm thick pice to me though. You'll have to convert it to inches, I use the metric system.
@@creativeobsin Thanks I appreciate the effort to try and remember from five years ago! Thanks again!
table saw, name it please
