I think it shows what an integral honest chap he is, as noted after him losing it with the rubber task, even though half the game is about finding odd/ingenious ways to complete an activity, he always goes by the book
That's the first time I ever thought of a solution before the contestants; as soon as I heard that the ball could only be touched by water, I immediately said "Ice!" Evidently, that means I'm most mentally attuned with Joe Thomas; I don't know if that's a positive or a negative...

Idk, I fell off of survivor around the Old vs Young season so I might be wrong but what was enjoyable about the series is that they took a wide arrange of all sorts of every day people and no matter how many seasons you pump out you will always have enough contestants. Not to mention Survivor is pretty good at weeding out the weak after a few challenges leaving the competent or more likable characters on longer. By comparison this show heavily relies on the comedic talent of the people on the show and with a much more niche group to take from as well as a smaller cast and it relying on celebrities it's a bit of a tougher situation. And we already know you can't just grab 5 random people, just look at the American version of task manager, that was just sad
This is one of my favorite closing moments of taskmaster ever. Paul hugs Sian twice (I mean who could resist that ball of adorable energy), he tosses 200 pounds into the crowd like a legend, and he hoists a trophy smaller than a paperback book as high as a 13 year old winning a chess tournament for the third year in a row.
So, so, so pleased for Paul this episode. Poor guy had to contend with a bad shoulder and possibly the early effects of his diagnosis on some of these tasks, which were rather taxing, and yet he never once complained.
I'm convinced that Joe Thomas has never once planned any of the things that happen to him. He just finds himself in a situation and goes "Ugh, fine. I guess we're doing this, then", and I can really relate to that. And what a fitting tribute by Lou to Phil & his legendary Wang. 😆

It must take such self control to just let the contestants do things their own way, no matter how wrong or stupid it is. From watching Joe splash a ball with individual pots of water to watching Iain blatantly disqualify himself during the sand-bucket task

The thing that impresses me the most about this series is how they compose each episode. I do genuinely believe that the taping is the first time Greg sees the Task footage, but Alex has a good enough read on him to know how he'll score each competitor. So knowing which Task to put in which episode to tell a compelling competition is great to see, especially with Paul looking like a hero in this one.
My favorite pattern is the tension when someone is singled out. You never know whether they did something absolutely amazing or entirely embarrassing and Greg's reaction (as well as the audience) is alwaus phenomenal
Which would be my suspicion that the show is cooked. Selectively picking tasks for an episode changes the outcome of that episode's scores. It wouldn't matter for the overall win, unless they cook that too, which they can do by picking which tasks to not include, and through tie-breakers, which only occur because they cooked the arrangement of tasks in an episode, and then choose which tie-breaker to choose from. So they can basically choose the winners of episodes and winners of the show through editing. Such practices are actually federally illegal in America thanks to some rigged game shows in the 1950s.
It’s the closest thing we get to character development on this show, unless we’re counting contestants falling further and further into madness as a development

I was surprised that Greg *didn't* rip into his prize task entry. For me, it being on cassette & including the player made it amusing & pretty good, though.

At 21:00 I realized Joe is absolutely right. Taskmaster is basically Kafka. You have infinite options, they all suck, the task is pointless, and the scoring is arbitrary. It is perfect.

As soon as I heard the rules, I wondered if the green balls would be the deciding factor, but I (and they) didn't know how many of each ball there would be, how they'd be launched, or where. It's easy to say in hindsight, but they had no way of knowing. Also hiding from the task would have been much less fun to watch. :)

@curtis allen I think Alex noticed after a few tasks that Paul wasn't one for banter during the tasks, unlike others. So instead he took it to Paul's home turf of quizzing so that they'll have some kind of conversation footage during his tasks.

I love how much fun Iain had in that final task. He looks like he just found his new favorite game and he doesn't even mind that Paul caught up to him because it's making the game more interesting.
i had wondered at first, but when greg says "cli" you can see his face scrunch up in what seems to be genuine thought/confusion, and Paul almost instantly honks after the next syllable. Still possible though.
This episode also aired around the time Paul announced his diagnosis of Parkinson's disease (and I assume it was aired at the same time or soon after the studio recording), so it's certainly possible. That said, Iain could've also been worried about losing all his points by guessing incorrectly.
If that was his intention, he didn't do a great job lol. Not guessing on that last word was a winning play, as he was ahead in the episode by 1, and would have won the episode if the last task ended in a tie. Guessing could have secured him the win, but it also could have secured him the loss if he was wrong. By not guessing, he forced Paul to take that risk instead.
Happy to see Paul win an episode, he was such a good sport the entire time. Also thank you to the entire Taskmaster crew, having these episodes to look forward to each week has been one of the little bits of normalcy helping me, and I'm sure a great many others, through this pandemic
I think he may have held back his competitiveness (partially because he seems to regret angry-shouty Iain. And also he looked genuinely pleased and maybe a little happy teary... or maybe his eyes are always that shiny and I need to get a grip because everyone being so happy for paul made ME happy for everyone!
Iain arguably held back a tiny bit towards the end to make sure it’s not impossible for anyone to catch him, but I think it’s also fair to say Paul caught up to Iain by his own merit. And i agree it’s very sporting of Iain, considering how competitive he was in earlier episodes

I feel like this show has broken Ian and is finally starting to turn him into a better person. Old Ian would've celebrated a task W, but there's only despair in this Ian's eyes.

@curtis allen They were asked to make a picture of the contestant, and nowhere in Lou's sand was there even an attempt to draw a person (unless that mass of blobs to the right is supposed to be Phil, in which case that's even worse). Writing someone's name, or drawing a picture of what their name sounds like is not drawing a picture of them. I think that attempt was barely worthy of one point, let alone two.
Where is episode 9? You can't give us an episode a week and then make us wait 10 days for the next one! Taskmaster is the only thing getting us through the pandemic!

There show is totally unscripted apart from a couple of the little bits they do like when Greg threw the glass of water in Alex's face.

@@ruqayyahqadri8180His body language. You’d typically expected someone to be a bit upset that they didn’t know a simple word like “anticlimactic,” but no reaction from Iain, because he knew the word. He waited until Paul answered, did nothing but smiled when Paul got it right like he was proud of him, then celebrated his victory.

I was surprised that Greg *didn't* rip into his prize task entry. For me, it being on cassette & including the player made it amusing & pretty good, though.

At 21:00 I realized Joe is absolutely right. Taskmaster is basically Kafka. You have infinite options, they all suck, the task is pointless, and the scoring is arbitrary. It is perfect.

As soon as I heard the rules, I wondered if the green balls would be the deciding factor, but I (and they) didn't know how many of each ball there would be, how they'd be launched, or where. It's easy to say in hindsight, but they had no way of knowing. Also hiding from the task would have been much less fun to watch. :)
I thought of it as well. In fact I also thought that Paul would come up with that as he did come with such an idea during live task in hoola-hoops

@@janal6984 I think it's more than just his appearance. The way he talks, moves and even how he holds himself while standing still, it's all very reminiscent of a young adult growing into his own skin, so he does look and feel like an awkward college kid.

@curtis allen I think Alex noticed after a few tasks that Paul wasn't one for banter during the tasks, unlike others. So instead he took it to Paul's home turf of quizzing so that they'll have some kind of conversation footage during his tasks.

I think it's definitely possible. He didn't seem that upset to lose.

i had wondered at first, but when greg says "cli" you can see his face scrunch up in what seems to be genuine thought/confusion, and Paul almost instantly honks after the next syllable. Still possible though.
This episode also aired around the time Paul announced his diagnosis of Parkinson's disease (and I assume it was aired at the same time or soon after the studio recording), so it's certainly possible.
That said, Iain could've also been worried about losing all his points by guessing incorrectly.
If that was his intention, he didn't do a great job lol. Not guessing on that last word was a winning play, as he was ahead in the episode by 1, and would have won the episode if the last task ended in a tie. Guessing could have secured him the win, but it also could have secured him the loss if he was wrong. By not guessing, he forced Paul to take that risk instead.

Happy to see Paul win an episode, he was such a good sport the entire time. Also thank you to the entire Taskmaster crew, having these episodes to look forward to each week has been one of the little bits of normalcy helping me, and I'm sure a great many others, through this pandemic

I can't help by think Iain let him have it, his competitiveness notwithstanding.
I think he may have held back his competitiveness (partially because he seems to regret angry-shouty Iain. And also he looked genuinely pleased and maybe a little happy teary... or maybe his eyes are always that shiny and I need to get a grip because everyone being so happy for paul made ME happy for everyone!
I got a similar impression - Iain just seemed to be holding back the entire second half of that task, and looked genuinely happy that Paul won.
I think maybe he hoped Paul would be wrong and losing all his points by answering first
You can also turn around to seemingly talk to Paul as they left the stage
Iain arguably held back a tiny bit towards the end to make sure it’s not impossible for anyone to catch him, but I think it’s also fair to say Paul caught up to Iain by his own merit. And i agree it’s very sporting of Iain, considering how competitive he was in earlier episodes

@curtis allen They were asked to make a picture of the contestant, and nowhere in Lou's sand was there even an attempt to draw a person (unless that mass of blobs to the right is supposed to be Phil, in which case that's even worse). Writing someone's name, or drawing a picture of what their name sounds like is not drawing a picture of them. I think that attempt was barely worthy of one point, let alone two.
