the way the timeline works in "We Used to be Friends" is exactly like the timeline in the contemporary musical "The Last Five Years". The musical is about a failed marriage and the wife's story starts from the end and the husband's story starts from the beginning. The only time the timelines meet is during their proposal and wedding and that's the only time the actors are on stage together the entire show. It's truly an incredible story and if you like the concept of the forwards backwards timeline this is a beautiful example of it!
Jack just reminded me about my copy of Plato's Republic collecting dust in my bookshelf but I'm not sure if I should read that anymore lol...Waiting for the 1 million party, Jack!
I’ve been trying to read that book for 4 years. I ended up listening to an 11 hour audiobook of it in one day😭😭maybe it’s better if it just collected dust lol
@@reganmckenzie2785 I read excerpts of Plato’s Republic for both undergrad and grad school, and I found them interesting. I haven’t read the whole of it.
If you would like to enjoy a really great use of the dual perspective/dual timeline, you should listen to The Last Five Years broadway soundtrack. About a couple, one perspective starting at the beginning of their relationship and the other starting at the end, the characters meeting in the middle at their wedding. It is marvellous!!
Learn something new everyday! Lol I was just about to mention the "She's The Man" reference before Jack did 😂 it's one of my favorite movies, and the only reason I thought of it; was when he mentions Viola and Sebastian, the characters Amanda Bynes and her screen actor brother play 😇
This may seem like a small thing or a slight "obviously" to some people but just wanted to say I really appreciated that you showed the final book without reading the title aloud. That word can be really hard for some people to hear (myself included) and even though I would have understood that you were "just reading it" and not saying it yourself if you had, the fact that you didn't meant something. When you mentioned the way the story was written for We Used to Be Friends, it reminded me so much of Barracuda by Christos Tsiolkas and I loved the way the narrative unfolded for that book. I've also done the hand thing when trying to explain how it works 😂😂
I feel like the style of writing/narrative works for ‘we used to be friends’. If the whole thing was about miscommunication, then it’s shown that they can’t even align in how they retell what happened. But I also haven’t read it, feel like that could be what the author was aiming for but wasn’t executed amazingly.
