    I appreciate the effort you went to in creating this video, which I consulted before my CrossClimate2 purchase. I replaced the Bridgestone Dueler Ecopia tires that came on my Highlander Hybrid with CrossClimate2 tires 1100 miles ago and am actually getting marginally better milage (about 1/2 MPG).

      You know that's good to hear. I had some transmission engineer or gearing with me for 30 or 40 posts about how these things do not lose mileage. And that's hard to debate when you know they do LOL especially with an engineer. So I'm happy that they didn't lose too much

    Working in a tire shop, and selling these tires regularly, they are very Heavy (compared to similar sized counterparts), and the tread design promotes rolling resistance. BUT, that's a small sacrifice for safety, and a lot of (if not most tire designs) sacrifice grip and comfort for combatting rolling resistance. I can't wait to get a set of these on my little highway warrior.

    • @steveg1667
      @steveg1667 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So it costs you another $300 a year for fuel but as you say safety comes first. If you wreck your car there goes any savings with cheaper tires and that does not include if you have an injury causing loss of work As for traction you are right about rolling resistance I had my window down a little and I can hear these things on the road it sounds like a paint roller on a wall you can hear it sticking to the pavement they are GOATs. As for fuel economy I can't tell yet if my Hybrid is losing efficiency as this time of year in colder weather hybrids always get worse mileage.

I have 2021 Toyota Rav4 hybrid and Im getting an average o 44.4 mpg city driving and using original tires from manufacturer which is Firestone Destination. Jake, it would be interesting if you have started doing the things we spoke about tire pressure checked regularly, alignments and rotation. All help with MPG. Maybe mention that in your video’s so others are informed about good tire care and good maintenance of their vehicle.

    • @jakeofreshly
      @jakeofreshly  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You know it's interesting. Ever since we spoke, I have actually been testing a little bit of stuff out. I was scared to change everything, because I just wanted to stick to factory, factory, factory, and more factory settings. But recently I have changed just a few things and I must say the ride quality has not changed one bit. You can put the tires up a little bit higher, and nothing changes. And I really haven't noticed a change in fuel efficiency. So I'm not sure if it's how these tires are built, or the way the tread pattern is, or the actual overall shape of the tread, but it seems like they're pretty forgiving and just about any condition you do.
      I was expecting to negate the loss in miles per gallon by changing the air pressure parameters, but I haven't noticed it gotten any better.
      That being said, the trade-off is fantastic. If I noticed I started getting better fuel efficiency but lost any of the benefits I have mentioned, I would just put everything back to stock. I'm so dang happy with these tires, I'm about to have a cow. And I don't want to mess that up lol
      But you have definitely given me a little bit of confidence, that is for sure

  • @thetechlibrarian
    @thetechlibrarian 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Yes 1-2 mpg loss is what I’m finding as well. I’m sure it’s dependent on the specific car and what tires you had on there prior like if your vehicle was specked with a low rolling resistance tire you would probably notice a big difference then if it had some what of a all-terrain tire on it. My theory is that it’s close to a 10% loss so for instance my car typically gets about 23 miles per gallon in the city and 27 to 30 on the highway a 10% loss puts me in about 1 to 2 miles per gallon. Now I do feel as though it is worth it for the security I feel when driving in the rain and snow it’s unmatched especially in the rain I am never fearful of hydroplaning when driving normal on the highway like I was when I had my Bridgestone dulers, I never did hydroplane but I felt like I could’ve but with the Michelin‘s I feel firmly planted to the road, honestly I wish I could see what the tires look like from the back when driving in heavy rain I would like to see how far the water is thrown away from the tire.

    • @jakeofreshly
      @jakeofreshly  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I pretty much can't agree more. I never have hydroplaned and crashed, but I can't tell you how many times I would be driving on the interstate on long trips through the rain and then my traction control would take control and my tires would be slipping and sliding. If I didn't have traction control and a new vehicle, I'm most definitely sure I would have crashed by now. But I've definitely had it happen a lot of times where I lose control and traction control has to take over for me
      I haven't had that one time since I purchased these tires last year. Not one single time.

    • @jakeofreshly
      @jakeofreshly  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And I have actually thought about the same thing as well lol. When you hit really big water, it reminds me of when I was a child and I used to ride my bicycle through water puddles. The tires cut through the water and send a rooster tail splashing out to each side.
      When I do this as well, I noticed it happens and I can hear the water splashing against the underside of my vehicle. I always thought it would be really interesting to see what it looks like from a third person perspective. However, the tires move too fast for you to be able to see that on the interstate and identify if you looking at the cross climate twos

      Can you isolate mpg for the last 10,000 miles vs the first 10,000 miles? All NEW tires get about 10-15% lower mpg until they get broken in. I learned this when researching why a brand new set of the same tires I removed got less mpg.

      For me - I have noticed a 10% mpg hit with my 2019 Camry Hybrid LE vs OE - Firestone FT140 (summer gas, similar outside temperature, driving patterns). The higher rolling resistance is obvious on light down slopes where ... I don't have to break and on light up slopes which I can no longer do at 35mph in electric mode. The battery charge level seems more often to be not high enough for 100% EV mode.

    The fuel mileage penalty is a small price to pay to have a tire that performs very well in the rain. This tire is designed so that water is pushed away to the side when the rolls through a puddle. All the reviews on this tire to prevent hydroplanning have been excellent.

      The wet & dry performance on the Defender 2s has also been very impressive. We drove through approximately 160 miles of rain this past weekend . At times there would be considerable amounts of water standing on the interstate and a few times there were numerous cars pulling to the side of the road waiting for the rain to letup. My wife was driving & she is usually a bit cautious driving when there is standing water on the road, but the RAV never once felt like it was trying to hydroplane even @ 70 mph which is the slowest that I noticed we were going. I know that the Defenders won't be as good in the snow as the CrossClimates, but we have a '21 Passport set up for Iowa winter driving if the snow gets that bad. I may switch the Passport over to CC2s when it needs tire. We'll see.

    I think the mpg loss is due to 2 factors. 1. I noticed in my application on my 2019 Jetta, these tires are around 1-2 pounds heavier than the stock OEM tires. That’s due to a thicker sidewall to achieve the 3PMSF rating for winter driving.2. The aggressive v tread and knobby characteristics of these tires also contribute to a minor downgrade in fuel mileage, look at any true winter tires and the same results bear fruit. Loss of mpg.

      I put them on my 2010 Jetta TDI and they did at first drop my mileage for the break in period. Now I’m getting within 1 MPG or less now they are broken in. My car is designed to be heavier with the Diesel engine and the size, amount of steel around etc. I’m gonna guess EV need very low resistance in order to drive properly as an increase weight in say a Prius would cause problems. Most car manufacturers these days recommend certain ratings on the tires they recommend Might even go thru charges too fast. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I have really liked these tires, I have driven them through all types of conditions except ice and they are very confidence-inspiring. However, I recently purchased a 4WD pickup which has 3PMS tires on it, so after my CC2s wear out I am considering switching to Michelin Defender2 instead for the longer tread life and still pretty good wet/winter performance. I think the D2s get slightly improved fuel economy over the CC2s also, as well as being a little bit cheaper to purchase. I strongly recommend the CC2 tire for virtually everyone, except if you are going to be driving on gravel a lot -- my tires have chips in some of the tread blocks from that kind type of terrain. If you will be doing much gravel or if you want solid off-road traction, the BFG Trail Terrain is kind of like the AT version of this tire in certain respects.

      There's one thing I noticed too, but I tried not to make too big of a deal out of it. I actually have a video if you click on my cross climate playlist where I go through and I actually have a decibel reader and measure it at how loud it gets. It's kind of a nitpicky concern, as it really doesn't affect anything. And you never have to raise your voice when you're in the vehicle. But I would have to say it's a little bit louder than the stock Toyo tires that came on my vehicle.

    Going from my worn out Toyo Avid GT's to CC'2s on my 21 Outback I have lost 3MPG. It might even be more than that. I had squeezed out 28.5 MPG before I took my old tires off, by being careful of my driving. the first tank of gas with the CC2's I got 24 mpg, and I was being careful with my driving. Some of that can be contributed to just having new tires on. Regardless of brand you put on, if you are going from old worn tires to new tires you are going to lose some gas mileage.

    What most people that say they loose fuel efficiency on these tires don't realize is the fact that these tires including treads are bigger than other tires. Inother words the diameter of these tires is bigger. If you buy these tires recalibrate your speedometer. A 245/40/18 from one tire is not the exact same size as another. Especially they are a different type of tire ie summer to all season. Tire pressure also matter. Your car calculates mpg and speed for factory tires so if you change your tires recalibrate your speedometer. It won't make that drastic of a difference but over hundreds of miles it might be one of the reasons for "lose" in fuel economy

    • @jakeofreshly
      @jakeofreshly  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I agree. And honestly, it's not even that big of a deal. I mean if you are buying these tires, then you are probably more worried about performance and safety and snow and rain traction. You're probably not buying these for fuel efficiency. There's a lot more fuel efficient tires on the market that are specifically built for that, so it's kind of like judging a tool out of its element.

    What if , just what if your rolling resistance of your new crossclimate 2 is more than your existing summer tyre ? That would say to me that I'd be expecting my fuel costs to rise and I'd take all that into consideration when buying . Now on the other hand like in my case the rolling resistance of the crossclimate 2 is actually better than my summer tyre and quieter so hopefully when i fit them i will benefit from quieter road noise and better fuel economy and combined with the snow and ice handling I'm a lot better off. You shouldnt really expect a all season or winter tyre to be as fuel efficient anyway its just how they are . If mine ends up costing a little more then its worth the trade off for the safety aspect in winter conditions. What if you dont make it to work in your summer tyred car ? You dont get paid when you're off? That there is a days pay .

      So bro to bro, my cousin works in a tire shop. And he says these are some heavy ass tires. By far 20lbs heavier than a cooper or something like that. I think the weight messes it up.

      @vivabielsamot5828 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think the very fact that an all season/winter tyre has a much more open tread pattern it is almost expected that this will affect the drag hence slightly less mpg , it's the trade off for having safety in bad conditions which I'm willing to take .

    • @jakeofreshly
      @jakeofreshly  ปีที่แล้ว

      Dude, really? That got you better mileage? I always follow the inside of the door, because it takkes the weight of the vehicle into place. SO if it says 36 psi, and you do 44. Psi, it will me more rounded and not apply the entire contact patch to the road. That can result in unusual wear down the centerline of the tire.
      But I have to know. Did it help the mileage? Bc the mileage is -2 for me

    Nice spread sheet work. Speed really does kill mpg. With all the driving around, when do you find time to work?
    I ordered a 2022 Rav4 AWD (due any wk now) to replace my 10pmg around town Tundra..lol
    I want to get a good set of "all weather" tires for it and don't really want to give up any or very little mpg with the new tires. My choice is down to Cooper Discoverer AT-34s, Nokian WRG4, Toyo Celcius , or the Michelin CC2. I have to deal with some winter snow, so it will be a yr round tire.

    • @jakeofreshly
      @jakeofreshly  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You're exactly right. And the funny thing is you can actually look before I bought these tires and it was always so. I would get upper 20s or middle 30s for fuel efficiency all the time in the 70 mph range. But as soon as I jump up to the 80s, it would pretty drastically lose efficiency. So honestly, The tire is just accentuated that. It was a little bit worse, for sure. But I think the tires just made it more noticeable. It's definitely nothing that would stop me from getting another pair
      Actually, I have been an accountant and I switched over to sales. And now I'm an engineer but I'm an engineering manager. So I do not drive for work. My work is rather boring honestly. I just drive a lot to and from work as well as drive a lot to see family and friends around the country. So it's really more for fun

    • @jakeofreshly

      And if fuel efficiency is your thing, I do not think these are bad enough to throw them out of the running. But in snow, there's no debate. I test them more in water and floods and things like that. Hurricanes and tropical storms. But my tests in the snow have been absolutely amazing, and I've had people from all over the world talk about how great the snow traction is. If you scroll through the comments, there's a lot of people who have gotten stuck with these tires because they're basically treating your car like a snow plow lol

    after a hard journey my tyres are barely warm and the pressure has barely risen...
    at this setting i now get 520 miles per tank fill instead of 465 on summer tyres ...............42 litre fill...

      But I must admit. The numbers do not lie. I measure miles per gallon instantaneously, and per fuel tank, and per oil change (which is about 5,000 mi)
      All eight oil changes have been significantly lower by a mile or two and every fuel tank is lower. So without a doubt, the numbers don't lie. And is not because of tire pressure

      But yeah we are definitely driving totally different conditions. I'm driving 100% interstate driving, and I'm very very aware of tire pressure and other factors. Like I said though, thank you for reaching out and talking to me about it. I bet it just has something to do with the different conditions. Because these tires get fantastic mileage at lower speeds like 60 mph on interstate. They still get 40 something miles per gallon for me

    Well. All Asian, Korean, and Japanese (TOYO and others) are bad tires. Continental, Michelin, and Pirelli are top of the line, Goodyear are okay, Bridgestones are terrible.
    I have CrossClimate 2s (All-Weather, not to be confused with All-Season).
    My brand new 2023 Toyota Camry XSE 3.5L V6 came with OEM Bridgestone Turanza EL440's which were removed with only 3 miles driven on them per delivery from Factory to Dealership.
    I drove ASAP to the nearby Tire and Service Store about a half-mile from the Toyota Dealership and got my CC2 installed.
    I've been keeping mileage and fuel fillups and cost, etc. The 2023 Camry XSE V6 window sticker 22 City/ 26 Average/32 Highway. Month after month and with my 6 month/12 month/ and recently 18 month Toyota Care Maintenance Service I keep on telling them/complained about my very poor MPG. My average is 16.99 MPG nowhere close to 26MPG. City is 14MPG and Highway is 25MPG. So where is 22 City /26 average/ and 32 HW???
    The Toyota Dealership has told me that must be the Michelin CrossClimate2 tires for the cause of my poor MPG.
    They always are at the proper Inflation at 35/36 PSI. My Camry odometer is at 7,310 miles in 18 months of driving. I use the Camry computer from the Instrument Panel displaying Tire Pressure and the Toyota App on my phone. The Fuel Nozzle symbol display on the Instrument Cluster has 16.4 MPG next to it, so when I say getting 16.99 MPG somewhat close.
    It is hard to accept that Michelin CC2 is causing a 9 MPG drop. Just "Passing the Buck" blaming something other than the Camry 2GR-FKS V6 engine.
    My 2023 Camry XSE V6 drives very well and handles the roads with ease, the Camry with CC2s went through 2 winter seasons as where I live the annual snowfall average is 126 inches. The last several winters have been milder so with climate change appears we are getting about 90 inches of snowfall or below average. I love the Michelin CC2s. But to say they are likely the cause of 9 MPG less than the Camry average is Bogus. Winter Tires or at times other tires can decrease your nominal MPG from 1 to possibly 5, but no way in hell lose 9 MPG.

      Do you know I’ve had a lot of people fight me on it. I’ve had some technical people fight me on it, but specifically a bunch of engineers fight me on it talking about how it would either be aerodynamics or changes tire pressure. But at the end of the day, if you get these tires are going to lose some miles per gallon.
      Now shockingly, it seems kind of strange that you’re losing nine. But I have heard a lot of of people in my comments over the years talk about losing a lot of mileage, electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles. I’ve had people talk about losing 30% efficiency on electric vehicles. And one thing I know from my nephew that is an tire shop is that he says these things are extremely heavy. When he gets one of these off the truck and has to install it, he always knows he’s going to have a sore back because the damn things are just heavy.
      So I’m not surprised at all. Although it seems like a lot 9 miles per gallon. Pretty ridiculous.
