- 👋 Today lets compare my FL5 Honda Civic Type-R against the 2025 Toyota GR Corolla! These are two of the most fun hot hatches on the market and offer a very exciting drive! The FL5 Honda Civic Type-R packs a 2.0L Inline 4 cylinder turbo engine with 315 Horsepower. It's only front wheel drive with a 6 speed manual transmission. The GR Corolla packs a 1.6L Inline 3 cylinder turbocharged engine with 300 Horsepower. The GR Corolla is only all wheel drive and has either a 6 speed manual or 8 speed automatic transmission. My FL5 Type-R was pre-owned and I paid $45k with just 2k miles. This 2025 GR Corolla is the Premium trim and also costs right at $45k. Overall these are both really fun to drive and I've driven the GR Corolla on the track and it was a blast! Owning my FL5 Civic Type-R for several months and multiple mountain drives, its a blast too! So how does the FL5 Honda Civic Type R compare to the 2025 GR Corolla? The Civic Type-R has a better interior. Feels more premium and a nicer dash layout with a better multi media screen. The bucket seats are amazing and ultra comfortable. The Type-R is also more roomy with better interior space. Back seats can fit adults and the cargo space is huge! GR Corolla is a bit small on the interior. Seats look nice but are nowhere near as supportive as the Type-R bucket seats. They are comfortable, but the Type-R bucket seats are next level! GR Corolla dash is a bit basic and the screen is basic. Back seats are tight and cargo space is about half as small. However the GR Corolla has better ride quality. It's suspension is more forgiving and feel like a more premium ride. Type-R can be a bit hard on the bumps. The GR Corolla having AWD is more ideal and offers better tracking. The 3 cylinder engine delivers power better with less turbo lag. However it's not as reliable of an engine as we've seen some issues. SO it really is a toss up but I still prefer the Type-R since the bucket seats are incredible and the interior is nicer. But the you can't argue with the high end ride quality and AWD in the GR Corolla. So if you don't need the space, the GR is an awesome choice! Especially since it has the automatic transmission available. But if you want more of a raw to drive car and want better interior space and design, the Type-R is a great choice too. Both cars handling like they are on rails and you'd have a blast drive either on track or in the mountain roads!

2025 Toyota GR Corolla vs FL5 Honda Civic Type-R | Whats The Better Hot Hatch?
Music By: www.epidemicsound.com
The Civic is a better car, but I enjoyed my time in the Rolla more. I like the compact feel and the smoother ride. The civic's cornering grip also got upset a few times on beat-up back roads roads.
GR does have a great ride. It's a bit too compact feeling for me. So the interior is was looses me. Type-R is more of a handful when pushing hard but that adds a lot of character to the experience.
@BrosFOURRSpeed , I 100% understand the compact feel being a negative. I'm 41 years old, so nostalgia blinds me. It takes me back to the late 90s and early 2000s.
That was my experience too when I test drove both and ended up with the Corolla . I viewed the compact nature of the GRC as a big plus and ultimately one of the reasons I bought it
Can’t wait to get my 2025 GR Corolla Premium in Heavy Metal! I was finally able to see the Heavy Metal color in person this week and it is definitely the color I am getting. It was on a 2025 premium Plus. Personally, I don’t want the carbon fiber roof because of the extra maintenance (rain and sun), unless I could get it for $45k OTD😂 Another good thing is the GR’s are FINALLY starting to come down and can be gotten at a discount….$2-$4k off!! Some dealers are marking the 24’s down $3k and the 2025’s $2k so all those market adjustments are basically gone on the GR’s now….FINALLY! If the Type R was being marked down, I would consider it because of the Blue it comes in (If I could get it $45K OTD I would), but they are still ridiculous! This summer it was +$10k markup, now it is down to $5k….refuse to pay more than $50k. Also, The GR is built in the special plant at Toyota and the techs are like the samurai’s of mechanics. That combined with all the improvements they made in the 2025 GR Corolla is what sold me on it. Only issue I have run into are whoever is installing the PIO/port installed options is damaging them, don’t know who at Toyota is ordering roof racks on them (already see 3 with damage, 2 with roof racks that were gouged to the metal and the one this week had a spoiler that was scratched). That is why I only want all weather mats and door sill protectors, THAT IS IT FROM THE PORT! Anyway, like I said, I can’t wait to get it….but I can wait till I get the deal I want! I have done so much research and looked at so many, I am ready to deal😂 Excellent video, sir. Hope that you and yours have a blessed Christmas💯🙏 I subbed!
GR Corolla is the updated Evo XI we never got. CTR is great but a bit too clinical. The GRC although not as precise and looks like a turtle, is just more fun to drive
It is nice having AWD. But the Type-R offers an exciting platform with that FWD character lots of people like
For some reason, I like the cheap budget commuter car feel of the cabin, coupled with the premium and exhilerating performance of the GR. It adds character. Almost the appeal of an actual tuner-car. Taking something otherwise mundane and utilitarian, and dropping a heavily boosted motor, aggressive brakes and suspension, slightly raucous exhaust, throw in bolstered seats, and maybe a more notchy, shorter shifter. But, I do kinda envy the more refined feel of the Type-R’s interior.
I can see that. The GR rides great and packs a ton of fun! Just wish it had seats like the Type R and more interior space
I have the 25 Type R . You nailed it when you said it feels like a little Go Cart that's why I own a Tupe R.
For sure! Such a drivers car all the time!
This type r is one of the best of all time in car history very
It's a good option!
I chose the GR Corolla for the AWD. I took it out last weekend on the canyon-roads in the rain and had a blast. Its as fun on wet roads as on dry, maybe even more fun.
Yeah the AWD is a big plus!
Great video dude. I kinda had an idea while I was watching this video. What if I swap the type R seats into my GR Corolla. That would be dope... If you want to trade me seats. My GR Corolla seats for your type R seats?? hahaha where you from btw. New Subscriber
Glad you liked the video! That'd be pretty cool for sure! However I'd want a boat load of money for them since that would probably kill the resale value of my car ;)
You can find seats for under $3k on eBay tho. Would be a fun mod to try out and see how well they can fit. I have a friend with an S2000 and has these seats in them
I have a GRC Circuit Edition and freaking love it 🎉 I like the compact nature and nimbleness. I have no prejudice against Type R. Its a great option. It was easier to get a GRC without markup than the CTR.
Oh cool. Fun car for sure! Type-R is definitely harder to find. They pop up pretty infrequently. However both my Honda dealers had brand new ones available when I bought mine all for MSRP. So my area both cars are easy to get. Can't go wrong with the GRC. Great car!
2025 fl5 or 2025 nissan z heritage manual? Which one?
I'd go Type-R. Z is too pricey for it to feel like it's the same level of a car to the Type-R. If you're going to spend around $60k, get a Supra lol
Both great cars and a test drive in each would tell a person which one suits them better!
Very true!
Is civic type r too wide? Any concern when driving on narrow road or parking?
I haven't had any issues. Only a few inches wider than the basic Civic. Seems easy to park. The Hood does feel a bit large especially compared to the GR. But still a very sensible car
I'm a honda guy but the corolla is better looking inside and out 🚗
I saw it in the premium "heavy metal" color and almost lost my mind 🤯
The only thing the corolla is missing is a sunroof and it would be unbeatable
It is a great car overall. Interior feels basic tho to me. Wish the dash had more character and with the seats were as good as the Type-R. But it's just as good overall as the TYpe-R
@BrosFOURRSpeed you think the corolla should have deeper seat?
@@JasonHdn More like a bucket seat like the TypeR. You don’t really sink into the Corolla. TypeR you are so well cradled in the seat it’s perfect for comfort and performance
@@BrosFOURRSpeed I see your point but I was originally commenting on looks not performance and that included the seats. The look of fx leather and suede wins for me plus the bright red fleece in the type r feels a little too much for daily driving and that includes constant getting in and out of grippy bolster seats. These are only opinions based on everyday driving, but if the car was used for rally or majority track then it's more than likely the owner will swop out both cars seats for aftermarket. Both great cars either way
I can see that. The materials are better in the GR. And the Type-R is hard to climb in and out of. But for performance driving and daily driving the TypeR has a much more comfortable seating position and it's better for fast cornering. Would be nice if they did a touch of the leather and made the back seats match tho. Probably both the two most fun hot hatches currently tho!
Oh yay another comparison video where the conclusion is that both cars are great and its up to us to decide which is better....
Well which one is better? It depends on what you want. Type-R is more roomy, has a better interior style and better seats. GR has AWD, less turbo lag and better ride quality.
So it literally depends on what you want out of the car. Each has strengths and weaknesses. To me the Type-R is better since I love the seats and nicer interior style and the extra space. GR is too cramped for me. But I like the better ride quality and AWD in the GR
@BrosFOURRSpeed Great points and great video but then why ask the question in the title if you never answer? It's like Raitis Rides, he NEVER answers the title of the video. I click on a video that asks the question because I assume the creator has an answer.
@@uptoolayte1 Keep in mind the title is also asking the audience what's better. Lots of owners of each car probably have some opinions on the other car. So it's opening up the comment section to the viewers to discuss which one is better.
@BrosFOURRSpeed if you say so
Just ordered gun metal manual premium plus GR fired up!
GRC clutch is definitely more difficult to drive and the shifter feel is very different between the two. The FL5 shifter feels more raw and similar to some great older JDM cars and the GRC has sort of an interesting tightness to it that you would probably need to do something like an acuity stage two kit to feel. A bit difficult to explain exactly the differences but it's plainly obvious driving the two.
I think the FL5/DE5 chassis communicates a bit better in corners in relation to the steering but the GRC feels even more stable with it's AWD system, there is just a slight disconnect between the steering and chassis compared to the FL5.
I didn't really notice much of a difference in the shifters. But the clutch is much harder to get used to in the GR. Steering is fantastic in the TypeR but the GR has a more refined suspension and the AWD is a good plus. Each has a lot to offer for sure
Is that the track or touring installed? Sounds super drony.
This was the track exhaust. Audi picks it up much different then in real life. It's a louder kit but not too bad around town.
Do you have an oil catch can? @ 1:30
No. Intake is the only aftermarket thing under the hood
What you think of installing one?
When is someone gonna do a Veloster N vs GR corolla
Probably won't see many since the Veloster N was discontinued right when the GR Corolla came out. So can't really compare them as brand new cars. Also the price of a VN is much less then the GR so it's more of a budget hot hatch in price point and performance. We had one a wile ago for a week and it's a fun car. The Elantra N seems to have taken that place.
grc now offers automatic as well, anyone can get it in it and drive it fast becuz awd. The same cannot be said for the type R and it is overall much more special
Yeah I mentioned the auto available. That's a great aspect to open it to more buyers. I do think the Type-R is a bit more special tho and seems to hold MSRP even on the used market
The type far better to me
Oh cool! Great car for sure and I've been enjoying it!
Of course, the Acura Integra is best! Great comparison. Thanks.
I like the civic more but that’s just my opinion
@@mjraynolds6478Integra will not age well. Acura always look like shit in 5 years. Google 2020 Acuras. They already look aged af
@@a124as Disagree for the DE5 I think it will age quite a bit better than the FL5.
Hopefully I can check one out!
@@a124asdude what cars are you looking at. Acuras from 2020 still look great. I own a ITS and trust it will age like wine.
The Type-R is great though i think the cloth interior for the price is a joke, i've looked at many used ones and they are not wearing well. Personally, i'd take the Golf R in a manual over both of these, more utility, better materials, and likely quicker. The MK8 Golf R has it's own inadequacies when it comes to the infotainment system being haptic buttons so there's that. None of these are perfect w/ the Corolla having an achilles heel with the AWD system shutting down and dare i say Toyota interiors are still like 5 years behind the times, the Type-R burning up brakes due to not being able to completely disable brake torque vectoring if you're driving hard. Really tough to pick these apart because of how great all of the 3 of those cars are but if you want to go to the aftermarket route for more power, the VW is pretty hard to beat. Over 400 WHP with just a tune and nothing else with AWD for grip, yes please.
Put your money where your mouth is. All talk
Both are winners.
@@a124asI have a 350+ whp E85 GTI, thanks bud.
The micro suede on the bucket seats looks amazing tho. Depends on how owners treat them. I have the Golf R vs Type-R video coming. Great car but not really exciting to drive tho. It's well rounded for sure with better materials, but honest have anything too special about it. All have a lot to offer tho
@@1FastMKVSupra aww couldnt' afford the golf R...too bad. so sad.
Obviously we no your pick 👍
Well I bought the Type-R. I do like the better interior and seats. But I also like the ride quality and AWD in the GR. Cramped interior for my taste tho
Dude, the suspension in the GR does not change from mode to mode!
yes it does
@@shiftautomotive854 Prove it! The suspension is set, and can't change.
@@Sagina1999 lol I have one the suspension stiff up in track mode you feel everything on the road
@@shiftautomotive854 The shocks (dampeners) have no change in whatever mode. They remain the same.
I've seen mixed things about the suspension. But it feels stiffer in the top modes
Fwd and 6 speed manual, no difference from a dodge neon srt4. Actually, srt4 are faster , power for power.
Yeah but that's also an incredibly cheap and junky car. Type-R is actually nice to drive and has good build quality. This can be made just as fast with mods. But who buys FWD for all out power? This car is about handling
Type R resale value > Gr Corolla
Yeah these hold very well! I can still sell mine for what I paid all day long
@@BrosFOURRSpeedhow’s that possible? I sold mine for $43k, and paid MSRP @ 46,500. After tax and all it was close to $50k. And the $43k was a pretty fair offer, right around the KBB trade in value. I listed it private party as well (for $45k) and got zero hits in a few weeks.
FL5 is the Best Sport Car in the World...
It's definitely been a lot of fun!
@@BrosFOURRSpeednicest way of saying no it’s not 😂
Hahaha, no it's not!. It's definitely good, in the current market where you can't really get a 6 speed, 4 door hatch. I've had them FK8 and now the FL5, I also own a shelby GT350R and it makes my type r really boring and slow.
Best car of all time in car history , very fast very big size
not even a sport car it’s a hot hatch
Type r is good for mom car 🤣🤣🤣
Why would you say that?
Let me guess, you like the Elantra N?
Corolla looks too stubby
It is definitely short and stubby looking
