Years ago when my first guild was fighting Lucifron, one of my fellow warlock players used Curse of Doom on one of his adds and it got the killing blow, the doomgaurd that spawned killed him before turning on the healers. I quickly dismissed my demon and enslaved it so as to prevent a wipe, then used it for the rest of the fight, man that was a good laugh for the guild.
I remember back in Vanilla, I was in Iron Forge, vendoring crap when a Horde pvp Raid attacked the city. First all the Warlocks summoned Infernals and let them loose on the city, then they summoned as many Doomguards as they could and let those loose on the city. They ended up leveling the city. Despite getting annihilated by an enemy faction, I still thought it was pretty epic.
As Gul'dan stated in HOTS "When the warlock clans first formed their simple incantations it could barely summon spiders, Summoning a demon... it was merely a dream. AND BACK THEN dAEmon had an A in it, LIKE I INTENDED.... It sounds more mystical that way"
When WoW first came out I was like, 5, and didn't understand how to play, but my sister did play with my dad and I remember when she first got her Doomguard on her Warlock I thought she was so cool lmao.

Technically, warlocks still have the summon doomguard spell. It can only be used at the altar in the Dreadscar Rift (legion warlock class hall), which I don't believe is accessible any longer. Every time I login, if I have an empty spot on my action bar, summon doomguard is automatically added because it's the first warlock spell in a warlock's spell book, being that it is listed on the first tab of the spell book, where racials exist.
I remember in Wrath I managed to get the killing blow with Curse of Doom twice in raids and everyone starting to cheer after the boss kill only to be interrupted by (very briefly) fighting the summoned doomguard

I've been maining Warlock since WotLK. Warlocks have gained a lot of fun interesting abilities between now and then, and the vast majority of these abilities have been removed. One of these is of course, the doomguard spell. I used to heavily associate my characters identity with the fact that he used a terrorguard as his pet. Now I can't use the terrorguard, or even the doomguard, at all. I stopped playing WoW because they seem to remove everything enjoyable about my class for no good reason.

I was going to mention that if no one else did. The Warcraft 1 demon was monstrous in size and ridiculously powerful. The Warcraft 2 demons were pathetic in comparison. Needed Warcraft 1 footage to really drive the point home.
Honestly, I think the original concept of the Doomguard is pure genius. The effect itself is so powerful, unique and fitting to the Warlock class, but at the same time limited in its use and effect by its unusual way of summoning and controlling the demon, that it renders it almost useless in serious scenarios. The spell is so niche, that most Warlocks probably wouldn't use it regularly, while still being so powerful and something prestigious many Warlocks would thrive to obtain. It's not an ability I miss because of its importance within the game, but because of the crazy fun things this spell can cause. Its one of many removed things, that made the World of Warcraft an actual world to me.
I wish the doom spell would have a chance to summon a doomguard.. -.- never actually uses that spell nor the ritual of doom.. current doom spell would be great with it's limitations too instant and 4.8k shadow damage after 16 seconds no cooldown tho so that would need to be like idk a minute seems fine, 5% chance to summon doomguard would be cool

Those were back in the days when WoW was meant to be an escape from reality. Now the game is just a another chore that requires you to repeat everything on new expansions. Spells are more meaningful, and adventures reward by making you stronger. Spells back then promotes teamwork for more convenience, so as more power. Now everyone gets everything, then repeats the process in a year.
I've mained a Demo lock since late BC. I have a summoned a Doomguard only once on a Boss fight with from an add. If I've ever summoned one before, I've never noticed.
Will definitely be respecing soul link when Dire Maul is released just so i can solo the satyrs in DME, to get the Ritual of Doom spell day one of the patch. As a person that loves to play warlock on all the private servers i've played being (vanilla, wotlk, cata, wod) private servers and now playing on retail (official wow) BFA, i can confirm that the ''Ritual of Doom'' (which originally was the name to summon the Doomguard) still exists and can still be used but now it just summons a random demon, i havent actrually been able to try out the spell since players need to be in a Summoning Platform which i guess is located on the warlock hall (same place where you summon the Chaotic Wrathsteed for the warlock mount), other than that you need 3 other players to perform this spells, which i suppose they must be warlocks too. I can only guess that the doomguard can still be summoned since the spell description is as follows: '' Performs a deadly ritual to summon a random demon. Requires atleast 3 participants.'' I personally love playing affliction but i'm sure i have seen other warlocks with a doomguard like pet on battlegrounds.
That wasn't to get a demon. In Legion evry class had a thing that would let them earn special rewards and some consumables that gived you buffs. Warlocks had the ritual, that would summon a powerfull demon, that would drop consumables, part of a trasmog set, a pet and an artifact appearence for destruction.
