I was hoping this video would help me, but I think I have a different problem. The wall that I am trying to cut a window hole through was not drawn with the RECTANGLE tool...it was drawn with the LINE tool. As a result, the wall is 4" thick at one end, and 4 7/8" thick at the other end. The PUSH/PULL tool cant' line up with the other face perfectly and is not cutting through. Is there a way to do it?
I'm not sure why I'm getting a different result, but I'm trying to cut out openings in grouped walls; double clicked and no matter what I try it won't work. The face of the otherside of the wall remains. Frustrating.
well that explains a lot of my issues!!! I'll have to add these notes to my notes when I write my notes I write them very detailed yet concise when I successfully perform commands.
Do the walls have to be grouped to get this to work? My push pull WILL NOT push any windows or doors out no matter what I do. It extracts it into one large block or just insets it but does not blow it out. I've tried typing 6", 7", even 8" and it will not work. I even redrew the wall twice and used the line tool and the rectangle to see if that made a difference and it will not blow these out. I'm getting so frustrated with this!
Brilliant! Thank you so much- I´m very new to sketchup so I´ve been spending hours trying to work out why it didn´t work cutting holes in my walls today when it worked yesterday. Exploading it first was the thing that did the trick, but ungrouping the object did not however. Do you have any idea why it did not work with ungrouping the object and selecting the wall face- is it because the walls are connected if you´ve made them from a pushed/pulled rectangle? And, would you mind me asking what the explosion does to an object? Is it like loosing the connections between everything in the object? Again- as I said in my comment last time- your videos are brilliant. I have learned soo much really fast from watching them.
UPDATE: If you're the kind that first puts imported windows on your walls then cut the holes behind them later; for the window that has failed to have a hole cut behind it, make sure the shape you cut around that window is slightly bigger than the window placed, then later adjust it with the move tool so it disappears behind that window. After, select that adjusted shape behind and extrude it as explained here👆. IT WILL DEFINITELY WORK!
Darn, I thought you were going to say how to use the cut opening when creating a component to cut through a double sided wall (seems to work on single plane walls)
Would have been great to explain the "Cut opening" function of components which dynamically cuts holes through surfaces without having to redo everything if placement needs to change.
For the third case, rather than exploding the group prior to the push-pull, delete the face (and edges) outside the group, then enter the group and use 'Paste in Place', then push-pull from inside the group.
I mean, the example was really to show that the front and back faces all have to be raw geometry, but yes, copy pasting the raw geometry of the other wall into the group would work as well
@@Thesketchupessentials Understood, it was just a good sample to discuss the difference between 'Paste in Place' and just plain, old 'Paste' (where the picked location may not be where the user intends). But still a good reference video :)
Hi, I'm big fan of your video's. Just started with sketchup as my first 3d design software. I started 3d design (or at least i'm trying) because of my model train hobby. I found some 3d trains, which were made in sketchup, but I don't know how to get these ready for 3d printing. Any tips/ideas? kind regards, Steven
If you have a wall, and the back side is in a group but not the front. And you want a window all the way through. Select the window, copy the window, open the group on back side, and Past in Place. Now delete the face in the window. Sometimes the last think I want to do is Explode a part.
@@Thesketchupessentials Yes I did - the start up video's sketchup has with their program says I should always group everything after I draw it. Can I ungroup walls after grouping them? I tried exploding and that did not work either. Sorry I am a newbie - but I love this program!
@@rodjeheber5774 I don't understand. Exploding is how you ungroup geometry. But if you want to edit grouped geometry, just double click on your wall to go into the group and edit it
@@Thesketchupessentials I am following your directions near the end of your video Justin. I am able to click on the wall or in the box (opening) I've drawn but when I go to the inside of the wall and right click the explode option is not available.
What infuriates me is how when you're trying to cut through a SINGLE face and the lines will show up on one side but on the other side they fade in and out and you can't make the wall and the window two separate faces. And you cant reinforce the faded unclear lines because then the snap to function won't work on the corners. Show us why if you draw a square on a single face (NOT doubled up ones like these walls) the inside and the outside of the box will stay one single face and you can't select the inside of the square???? this has been annoying me for years. I have a wall with THREE windows. TWO of them separate fine, no problem. I go to add the THIRD window and it's screwed up. Won't separate or penetrate or cut out. Nothing. ????
Sir, how do I see my sketchup file preview? Whenever I do a modeling and save a file, it shows the symbol of SketchUp. The preview of the model inside it is not visible.
Reinstall SketchUp, this happens if you uninstall eg 2020 and leaving 2017. The association is with the 2020 version. If you reinstall the 2017 it will associate the skp files to the current prog version
Thank you Sir. Now I think every one use the sketch-up not an auto cad because i love this Software and Autocad is old Software . by the way i can understand the Autocad , So Can anyone let me know what do we do in Autocad ? Clear and well explained as always. One question is I use explode quite a bit but should I be regrouping after?
