      Hello is the diafragma in the ccv stuck in the open position ? So the intake sucks alot of air ?

  • @ReCverin
    @ReCverin 6 ปีที่แล้ว +96

    There are lots of smart asses posting comments here, but this is a very useful video that shows what to expect when diagnosing the CCV valve membrane/diaphragm failure. A slight vacuum is normal, but this extreme vacuum is not. CCV failure is a lot more common than many people think; on the models listed here as well as every other BMW manufactured since the early 90's, as well as the VW 2.0 TSI, and I'm sure there are others. P0171 and/or P0174 are common. Other symptoms can include whistling/screeching/howling sounds of air being sucked into the crankcase, sometimes through the oil filler cap or valve cover gasket, sometimes through the front or rear crankshaft seal. On a VW 2.0 TSI, this problem can, and often does, pull their stupidly designed, cheap rear main seal loose, meaning you have to drop the transmission to repair the oil leak. This has also occurred on BMWs although less frequently. There is a TSB describing replacement of the front or rear main seals on certain BMWs era 2009-2011 due to CCV failure. Thanks Bimmer Zeit, ignore the smart asses.

      @BIMMERZEITT  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thanks for the helpful comments bud, I appreciate it. Yes, it is good to mention that this CCV failure is a common cause of the P0171 and P0174 codes. On this car the vacuum was so strong that it put hairline cracks in the valve cover, further leaking air and causing lean codes.

      I have an e36 m52b25 engine, I checked and cleaned all the vacuum pipes, inlet manifold etc and fitted pattern part ccv, I had so many issues recently with misfiring and low end power which was down to a DEAD battery, Car running a lot better now but I'm getting a whooshing noise and I can't figure if it's my fan blade noise or another ccv issue, I have a light vacuum pull on my oil cap if I remove it while motor is running nothing like the strong vacuum in the video, and my engine rpm only dips slightly with it off, same with oil dipstick, car has done 242,000 miles.

      when buying a used one with no history of maintenance you must methotically replace everything and start a new history, Thats why you should get it dirt cheap.
      you should turn your own wrenches and get INPA or some software to monitor its health regularily. They are attention whores and high maintenance but they also perform!!! if you're into gassing up and oil changes only, they are not a good car.

    Is it similar for e36 m52b25? And that cup suction and idling means that ccv valve is totally gone bad or it just starts to fail and functions incorrectly. And when it totally fails what can happen then? I heard if it fails totally then it can suck oil from karter to cylinders and burn it all.

    • @BIMMERZEITT

      Bank 1 and 2 what? Lean? You have to be specific. First step should be a proper smoke test of the intake to find leaks. There are numerous areas that can leak including but not limited to: DISA, intake bellow upper, intake bellow lower, hairline cracks in valve cover, valve cover gasket, CCV and its associated connections, oil dipstick tube can be clogged.

If i pull a hard vacuum with the vacuum cleaner on the top the diaphragm closes a bit but feel like it doesnt move as much being that quite a bit of vacuum flows through the bottom. • @albertobellato7009
      @albertobellato7009 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      On my M57 diesel the vacuum is a lot weaker, as normal for a turbo diesel engine. One can open the cap without particular force or hiss. The most important thing to look for on M57 engines it the health of the PCV filter/separator, located on the top of the head cover: it often gets clogged (because of poor manteinance), increasing the pressure in the crankcase, ultimately leading to turbo failure due to lack of lubrication. On the other hand, if it breaks, rue turbo can start to breathe oil drops, leading to failure. Keep your PCV filters clean and changed, I do mine every 10.000 km. Regarding vortex filters, I received mixed opinions from friends with the same engine, therefore I prefer to stick with the classic cotton filter and increase manteinance. No issues so far (230.000 km).

    Um I did my valve cover job yesterday and the cams are really clean for 200k miles on my m62tu44 and soon I'm doing the pcv valve thingy on the back of the manifold. I know it's bad since it cold start cloud of smoke, weird idle low then slightly higher then back low and vacuum in the the crankcase. Mil on for multiple misfires at start up but she has no misfires so little by little fix this and that hopefully a never ending cycle of fixing stuff. What else could it be that's keeping the engine all pressurized like that?

    • @BIMMERZEITT
      @BIMMERZEITT  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Alfred Ferrill hi Alfred, I am not familiar with the 645 motor- however- on the M54 the dipstick tubes get clogged due to poor original design and are a part of this whole problem with the crank case valves. An updated dipstick guide tube was added to the parts catalog at some point. Maybe check into the dipstick guide tube for your model, hope it helps.

    Anyone know roughly how much someone should expect to pay an indie to replace a CCV? The vacuum isn't as bad as this but I do have a slight suction and I do have the yellow gunk ('bmw mayo') around the oil cap. Think it's a combination of thermostat stuck open (never getting up to temp), O2 sensor, really cold weather and possible CCV

    Thanks for the info on CCV issues. In the video I saw the coolant tank filler cap on left side when facing the engine and windshield fluid tank in left firewall box. I have only seen that configuration twice and wonder if It is a stock option on 330 CI. I was hoping that I could improve performance on my 330 CI by replacing the air filter box by changing configuration to match what I saw on video. @@BIMMERZEITT I think this is bullshit, if there is no vacuum and rev drops that means, the intake cannot suck air(oil gases) from cylinder head and crankcase YOUR CCV WORKS BADLY. If your CCV is good working when you remove the oil cap it has to have a little vacuum, not big as you've seen in the video, just a little vacuum. And your engine has to drops rev a bit, because the intake manifold get some unmeasured when oil cap is open. The MAF is among the CCV intake hose and air filter.

      If your CCV is original or very high miles it is possible it could be causing some oil burning, yes. If the oil is low on the dipstick you probably are just low on oil from the burning. It is possible to have other oil burning issues, more common is bad valve seals and less common is a piston ring issue. Start with the easy maintenance first (do the CCV kit for under $100). If still no remedy, have a shop do a leak down test to see why it is burning oil. Hope it helps!

      Francis Vidal you’re right this system is very frustrating! New ones can fail or be bad out of the box. Not an easy job either. The things we deal with to have our bmw’s!!

      @@BIMMERZEITT Great video, very clear and informative. That's too much vacuum I guess, but how much vacuum should there be when the CCV is doing it's job correctly ? When I remove my cap there is a very small amout of suction but not that much in your video that I hear hissing.

      Arnold Rimmer that’s perfect. It should be a very slight amount of suction. As in, you can lift up the oil cap with 2 fingers easily. The intense suction here indicates a ccv failure or clogged dipstick tube.

      @@BIMMERZEITT I see, thanks for confirmation. I've never removed the oil cap on a running engine, but after seeing your video I just had to do it :)

      Arnold Rimmer some old school cars you can’t remove it while running or it can spray oil everywhere. The design of this engine allows you to do it though.

    Tried this on my e46 325i after watching this video and it started dumping white smoke out the exhaust after removing the cap. I thought the head gasket blew but the pressure change caused the failed CCV valve to get stuck open (or closed) and it slurped all the oil/condensation into the combustion chamber
