      @@JayH-tz4ipNo, it isn’t ironic. This song simply says being naked, or having sex, isn’t a requirement for a good time- a POWERFUL message as HIV & AIDS were destroying communities. For all you know, he could have been HIV positive prior to recording this song & decided to send a good message🤷🏾‍♂️

    I know Jermaine did a lot of backing vocals for Boy George and Culture Club around 1984/1985. I can clearly hear his voice in some of the old Culture Club 80s classics.

  • @MRoyClark
    @MRoyClark ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Jermaine Stewart started out as a Soul Train dancer and was in the running to be a part of the Soul Train-inspired vocal group, Shalamar. He later met Mikey Craig of Culture CLub and sang backup with them on their major hit, "Miss Me Blind". "We Don't Have to Take Our Clothes Off" song came out a couple of years later in the mid-1980s as AIDS was making everybody (understandably) paranoid about sex. The message definitely resonated, because the casual sex of the early 80s club scene was suddenly a terrifying prospect. In a cruel twist of irony, he lost his own life to complications from AIDS in 1997. "...Clothes Off" (US#5) was his only major US Hot100 hit, though "Jody" and "Say It Again" found success on the R&B and Dance charts.

This band was brothers and sister from Tonga by way of Minneapolis. 17 total children in the family but the group was usually about 8 or 9. And they were all under 22 when this song came out. Our parents didn't have to push this one on us. It was on EVERY radio station as soon as you turned the dial. It was a HUGE hit. Also, Jermaine made this song in response to so many of his contemporaries dying of AIDS. Sadly, he couldn't escape the disease himself.

    A rare wholesome song from he hair band era.
    My first and favorite female horn player was Cynthia in the band Sly And The Family Stone who we lost 7yrs ago. It’s time to revisit SATFS and ANY of their songs from the Stand album. Stand, Everyday People, I Want To Take You Higher, You Can Make It If You Try, and one of my favorites, Sing A Simple Song.

    For obvious reasons, this was one of those songs of the era that parents were very appreciative of. Janet Jackson's "Let's Wait Awhile" was another.

    Back then, there was this live music program on Dutch TV called "Los-Vast" (Loosened-tightened) where they'd have a day of music on live television in Rotterdam's football stadium. Jermaine Stewart was booked when this song was a hit. He came on and remarked, baffled, that he never performed for such a big crowd. He smashed it of course.
    But as for what this song is talking about, he sure didn't put his money where his mouth is. Because as the presenter of another Dutch chart show said "He tried hitting on me constantly."

    Jamaine Stewart was extremely famous in Europe, where he lived for some years. He was best friends with Boy George and George Michael's, it was Boy Geogre who encouraged Jermaine to go solo
