When I was in high school this was played at every single dance. Homecoming, Sadie Hawkins, Prom, all of them. And every girl that wore red would feel like this song was playing just for them. I remember at Prom 1995, my date wore a dress, and I whispered to her "the lady in red IS dancing with me...cheek to cheek."
Chris DeBurgh is one of those European artists that were hugely successful everywhere but the USA. He has an unmistakable voice. If you want to hear something more up tempo then you should check out "Don't Pay the Ferryman" and "Ship to Shore". By the way, my wife and I love dancing to this song. We have been married for 46 years.
I ❤his more recent cover of Turn, Turn, Turn is fabulous (th-cam.com/video/CFo25V4JAfE/w-d-xo.html). I love "Transmission Ends", "The Tower" (makes me cry), "This Silent World", "Flying Home", "Waiting for the Hurricane", "This Waiting Heart" and of course "A Spaceman Came Travelling" (at Christmas). I have played "Where Peaceful Waters Flow" on guitar myself for so many years. I sang it with two lifelong friends as a sort of goodbye just before we all left university - Crusader as well (on 12 string guitar). So many fabulous songs. I love his story songs like "Spanish Train", "Patricia the Stripper" and love the quieter songs like "if you really love her let her go". Can you tell I'm a fan 🥰
I remember reading an article back in the day where Chris stated that the song was written for his wife who was wearing red at their anniversary party. Now every single time I hear this song I can't help but get emotional. What a beautiful gift!
The real life love story of this song took a hit in the mid-'90s when de Burgh revealed that he had an affair with the 19 year old nanny he employed while his wife was recovering from a horseback riding accident. After some public contrition, with de Burgh saying "I don't want to gamble with my marriage and my family," he and Diane remained together. things are never as they seem {:-) PAV UK
"Don't Pay the Ferryman" is a great story song. I've always liked reading the tales of the Greek and Roman myths and this tale of a trip across the river Styx is a banger. It's on my list of songs to exercise to, especially on a power walk.
I just love the way you both have grown oh so very much on the variety of different types of songs you now listen to and appreciate. Here from the beginning and i will not stop watching you make me happy Thank-you 💜🎶🎵✌🇨🇦
What woman doesn't want to be seen like this by her husband?! This was in honor of Chris De Burgh's wife! So sweet and warm and just so full of love. Really sweeps a girl off her feet. Thanks for your reaction to this truly lovely song. Such a nice walk down Memory Lane. 💕
@@butterflygad True, he did. But he and his wife reconciled afterward and are still married. This is a love song and honestly, I think their reconciliation proves that. Man is not perfect, but love is.
My wife was my beautiful Lady in Red (ok, velvet maroon) when we married in '96 and we played this for our dance. 27 years and still going and even though I wonder where that beautiful woman went, she is more beautiful to me now then ever. Sheesh, being 600 miles apart for the last 6 months has made me all soppy. I don't know how TH-cam knew I was thinking of finding Chris DeBurgh reactions today but here we are. Thank you for the memories and reaction.
End of June 1977, at the Montreal Forum (17,000 fans)... Chris De Burgh is the opening act of Supertramp! The lights go out! A spotlight shines over a lonely barstool on stage... out walks this guy with a guitar... now I'm thinking "This guy better be good!" Then he starts singing "Spanish Train!!! Wow!!! A love story between artist and city started right there, in front of us!!! I've been asking you guys for a year now to hear "Spanish train" and "Patricia The Stripper"... storytelling at it's best!!
He has some fabulous songs, as someone else mentioned "Don't pay the Ferryman" is great and "Borderline" his cold war protest song is hauntingly beautiful and soulful.
I did a little list just now and completely forgot 'Borderline'/'Say Goodbye To It All'. As you say, 'Borderline' is just beautiful and sad; 'Say Goodbye' gives us some hope. I always listen to them together.
Hidden gem! This is one of those songs that is sentimental to a lot of people. Many memories dancing to this one. Follow up recommendation: Don’t Fear the Ferryman.
I love Chris deBurg. He has so many great songs. Don't Pay the Ferryman, for the beat, Spanish Train, A Spaceman Came Travelling, for the messages, In a Country Churchyard, for the piano and Patricia the Stripper, for a laugh.
You say 'Chris De Burgh' to anyone over 30yrs old, and this is the song they will reply with..... It's such a beautiful song, and his performance will always touch your soul!!! Great choice today guys ❤
CdB!!! Omg! He was the very first musical artist I ever got hooked on as a kid. My first money spent on music. Since then I’ve fallen in luv with so much of his music. As he was my first music artist it’s been my lifelong challenge to collect all his output. Love him and his music. Too many gems. My sister gifted me two tickets for his concert when he came through town so I’m am super grateful that I’ve seen him live now too. At the concert many of the women wore red. When they played this song CdB left the stage and worked his way through the audience singing to as many of the ladies in red as he could. Special memories.
What else from them to listen to? Gosh, that is hard to say. This was arguably his biggest hit. His early music was story based and where he made a name for himself at first but it’s hard for me to say what would make a good listen now. Mid 80s he started going for more pop songs and radio friendly stuff (like this). “Don’t Pay the Ferryman” was also pretty big. Or “High on Emotion” too - I remember hearing those songs on the radio a lot back then… Personally I’d suggest “For Rosanna” for RSR to listen to. I think it will be sweet for them and touch them too.
Finaly, my absolute favorite Singer/Songwriter. He has so many good songs: Spanish Train, Patricia the Striper, dont pay the ferryman and so many more.
There’s one video of him recently in his older years with his wife, dressed in red of course, on another stage just to the left of him watching while he sings this song basically to her. This has always been a really great song.
Lived In Ireland in 1980s was privileged to see him play in the RDS and watched my best friend walk his wife down the aisle to my best song in a country churchyard ,
This guy is great. He was the opening act for Supertramp, on their first North American tour back in the 1970’s. They started their tour on East coast Canada in Moncton, New Brunswick. That’s where I was introduced to Supertramp and Chris Deburgh….both acts were unforgettable.❤️🇨🇦😎
Chris wrote this song for his wife Diane, it was inspired by his memory of the first time he saw her, it was a massive hit in 1986, other great songs by him Don't Pay The Ferryman High On Emotion Ship To Shore Spanish Train Great reaction guys 🇬🇧
Fatal Hesitation off Spark to Flame Album is a great song, so many great songs. The Tower, In a Country Churchyard, and probably my favourite, Where Peaceful Waters Flow.
Great reaction guys. This is a massive wedding song and very nice. But "A Spaceman Came Travelling" and "Don't Pay The Ferryman" (makes you think of LOTR) are awesome.
Chris De Burgh (pronounced D'Burgh). His daughter won Miss World in 2003. You picked probably his most cheesy song of all. Don't Pay The Ferry Man is a banger. If you want a big of a giggle listen to his Patricia The Stripper. Very funny song. Catchy too. But Ferryman is definitely the song to hear next. Then Spanish Train, eerie but brilliant. Lonely Sky, another banger. Borderline also worth a listen. And of course his Christmas classic, A Spaceman Came Travelling
You guys are blowing my mind so often with dipping into some tunes that I never would have expected. Thank You so much. One of my favourite Chris De Burgh songs (that I saw him perform live!) is 'Patricia the Stripper' :) Worth it. So worth it! :D
Like someone else mentioned, this was our high school dance song. Puppy love memories :) For something completely different in a mysterious kind of way you need to listen to "Don't Pay The FerryMan" or if you dare..."Spanish Train."
This was his biggest U.S. hit reached number three on Billboard pop singles chart in June 1986 he had one other U.S. single in 1982 barely cracked the top 40 keep up the great work guys
A BOUT TIME !! I've been begging you to play some of his music for months. You're really going to enjoy his rabbithole because he's a master story teller as well. Try SPANISH TRAIN next. I've had the good fortune to see him in concert 3 times, once on consecutive nights . FYI - this song, he wrote for his wife, and This Song For Rosanna, he wrote for his daughter, who grew up to be Miss Ireland years ago
*Rob N Amber*Thank You for trying this song....The story of experiences with his true Lady Love in this song truly touches this Empathetic person, and it moves me..Although I never experienced True Love, And probably never will, the feelings from this song truly touches me,and moves me,enough to cry from its beauty.... In 1984 there was a movie made titled "The Woman in Red" starring Gene Wilder and Kelly Lebrock and Gilda Radner. Though the movies name is different from the hit song by Chris De Burgh. The movie is remembered most from this hit song. The song in the film that won the Academy Award for best song in a movie was Stevie Wonder's "I just Called to Say I Love You." Just a little trivia.
This is one of my old favorites! It's so sweet and beautiful. Every time it comes on the radio, I just turn the volume up. This is a song people can forget but to me, it's an 80's must-have. A true classic.
This was the theme song for one of my favorite soap opera couples (Steve and Kayla) back in the 80s . They’re still on Days of Our Lives and I still love this song!
Yes. This was everyone's favorite. A film song. You want to be dancing when you hear this song. Everyone would sing it while they walked down the halls at school.
This was a popular song back in the 80’s It was played at dances - usually the last song of the evening! Chris De Berg was such a popular singer, had lots of hits & did many 7:51 concerts💗🎶
Hey Jay and Amber! I'm glad you got this song from Chris De Burgh as your first reaction to him. This is probably his most popular track and was everywhere when it came out. A top 40 mega hit I believe. It is from the latter part of his career when he was less folky and interesting in my opinion. I have seen him live twice pre Lady In Red in the 70's and his earlier tracks such as: Don't Pay The Ferryman, Spanish Train, Just Another Poor Boy, Borderline, Lonely Sky, A Spaceman Came Traveling, Patricia The Striper, Crusader, Africa (live Toto cover), The Painter, The Tower, Saint Peter's Gate, are far superior, in my opinion. His live shows were amazing. The first time I saw him, he was opening for Supertramp. It was just him on guitar and vocals with a keyboard player. Wow!!!! The second show he was the headliner with full band. Another great show.
ISA him at the lark by the Lee in cork the year last in red was out ithink 1987 Iwas only a teen buthe place was rocking.brillant singer fantastic show
This particular song by him and its beat was so much of a staple of the slow dance moments in the clubs of the era...I mean you listen to its beat and the atmospheric sound to it it is a classic musically of the particular decade all those years back. Many years ago there was a music artists impersonation show on tv called Stars in their Eyes fronted by Matthew Kelly who was one of ITV's biggest stars back then. One of the contestants was doing Chris De Burgh and this song - as he was singing it De Burgh appeared behind him, was a massive moment tv wise of the show back then.
He wrote so many great songs, very different sides to his vocals, this was one of the smoothest. It made him a more mainstream artist, but was also in the UK charts for so long it became a bit of an albatross round his neck credibility wise, it surprised me how much I enjoyed seeing and hearing you guys reacting to it for the first time. May I suggest some of his earlier work - Lonely sky, Spanish train, Patricia the stripper, High on emotion, Ship to shore, Don't pay the ferryman, A spaceman came travelling - was his Christmas song, very powerful so maybe schedule that on your list for December time. Thanks for helping me hear this again with a fresh perspective.
Dont pay the ferryman.
The really good chris deburgh.
A genuine irish success story!
ooh I 2nd Don't Pay the Ferryman!

His live shows were amazing. The first time I saw him, he was opening for Supertramp. It was just him on guitar and vocals with a keyboard player. Wow!!!! The second show he was the headliner with full band. Another great show.
ISA him at the lark by the Lee in cork the year last in red was out ithink 1987 Iwas only a teen buthe place was rocking.brillant singer fantastic show
This and Eric Clapton's Wonderful Tonight are great slow dance jams
I thought rsr did this before. I love this song!
This one brings back memories of the mother of my children. Young and in love. Man life was great.
Love this song, so many memories.
"A spaceman came travelling" is great by the same artist.
