Maybe I’m just old or too old-fashioned because I saw Raw and I didn’t like it. There were a lot of young comedians who came after Richard Pryor who tried to imitate him. But Richard was one-of-a-kind. And while Richard Pryor was definitely dirty he was seldom nasty. It’s a fine line and Richard knew where to draw it. The young comics trying to imitate him were just nasty and, in my opinion, not funny or entertaining.

The album made #26 on Billboard's top 100, and "Party all the Time" charted at #2 for three weeks. Rick James wrote and produced the single and sang backup, and Rick James, Aquil Fudge, and Stevie Wonder co-produced the album. Murphy wrote three songs on the album and co-wrote two.

One of the coolest songs of the 80s. Eddie began his stand-up comedy career in 1976. He frequently provided background vocals to songs released by the Bus Boys; the song "(The Boys Are) Back in Town" was featured in the movie 48 Hrs. (1982) and Murphy's comedy special Eddie Murphy Delirious. As a solo artist, Murphy had two hit singles, this song and "Put Your Mouth on Me" during the latter half of the 1980s. He had started singing earlier in his career, with the songs "Boogie in Your Butt" and "Enough Is Enough", the latter being a parody of Barbra Streisand's and Donna Summer's 1979 song, "No More Tears". Both songs appeared on his 1982 self-titled comedy album. Love the reaction guys! Keep them coming!😊

Eddie did stand-up and joined the cast of SNL when he was 19 years old (‘80)
That’s where he got his start (grownup Buckwheat character; Otay 👌).
His first movie role was in 48 Hours (singing Roxanne! for his character introduction) in ’82.
Murphy, Belushi, Akroid, and Martin started the SNL actors getting movie roles thing, that’s filtered down to many SNL cast members to this day (cross-over with In Living Color’s Wayan bros, Jamie Fox, Jim Carrey).
Time after time the SNL skit become so iconically funny that someone writes their skit characters a whole movie ie: Night at The Roxbury, Blues Brothers, the Jerk, Foul Play, Silver Streak, Three Amigos, etc.
Probably half of them can sing as well as they act.
Eddie has a ballad too called How Can It Be.

Eddie was primarily a comedian/actor, starting on SNL in the early 80's. This was at the height of his popularity in the mid 80's, and he had the power to make a record if he wanted. He made other records, but this was by far his biggest hit.

A lot of actors take singing and vocal lessons early on in their careers because it helps with their annunciation and performance skills. Eddie is and always has been super talented in everything that he sets out to do because he pours his heart and soul into whatever he's working on. One of my favorite comedians, actors, and yes I loved this song when it hit the airwaves!! Thank you for posting as it brought back some good memories.

Eddie started as a stand-up comedian, with several comedy albums selling well. He was discovered and made a featured player on SNL. That thrust him into a large exposure. He quickly went into films (48 Hours, Beverly Hills Cop, Raw) that made him explode in popularity. It was at that point this was recorded and released.

BTW, that guy with the hair is Rick James. An absolute legend that unfortunately is mostly remembered for the Dave Chappelle skit, which is hilarious to be fair. You need to check out 'Give It To Me, Baby' and 'Super Freak', the latter which you'll definitely at least know the rhythm of.

Eddie sings in most of his movies. Usually for laughs, but you get glimpses of the talent.

Just saw the fade out scene in the video where Eddie and Rick make signs with their fingers, at 8:09, and immediately heard Eddie say "Oh Tay" in my head. Which of course is why they did it. Brilliant.

I grew up with Eddie, first as a stand up comedian and his early years on the cast of SNL. He then hit it big in movies. I believe the singing was more of a way to prove he could accomplish that goal.
If you haven’t seen his 2019 movie “Dolemite Is My Name” where he draws on the 1970s blacksplotation Dolemite movie franchise, you should watch it. It earned him more praise and a 97% Rotten Tomato score.

Few people know about Eddie's amazing singing voice. Now I'm going to date myself. We did aerobics to this in Jr High PE.
