In the early years of BTS, the guys were either not treated well or were completely ignored by other idols/artists on music and variety shows and at competitions. Producer Bang Si Hyuk was very progressive in caring for BTS by providing counseling for them and by creating BTS's own show, Run BTS. PD Bang and his Big Hit team came up with these ideas that balanced the guys' work life with creative and friendly competitive play. The neat part is that mirroring did occur and fans watch Run BTS shows repeatedly to get a healthy dose of endorphins, too! As a silver ARMY, I can't play like BTS members play, but I feel their happiness vicariously. As fans, we try very hard to let them (and PD Bang) know the healing and happy effects their work AND play has had on us! Thanks for a great episode, Dr. Harley! Stay healthy and happy!

Hi Uncle Doc. This reminds me that the original slogan of Big Hit Records was "Music & Artists for Healing". Healing! A remarkable focus for an entertainment corporation!
As BTS gelled into a group and gained recognition, Big Hit began to produce "Run BTS" videos featuring the members playing games, solving puzzles, and just bouncing off each other. This was a genius move. It strengthened bonds between the guys, but it also drew fans into their world. We could mirror their happiness, and learned a lot about their personalities.
I believe a lot of Armys will say they received healing energy from this form of play. (It still feels weird to spell "Armys", doesn't it?🤔)
Western norms don't accept the level of touching that BTS share with each other, especially when it involves sleeping habits. I learned about "family style" sleeping arrangements from my Japanese in-laws. The whole family sleeps together on the floor with the elders in the middle, and friends sleep together under the same blanket. No big deal. We could rethink that.
    I appreciate your reflections!

I also watched another Korean entertainment show (I-Land; the competition series that produced the band Enhypen), and the guys in that show were also VERY affectionate toward each other. Often holding a hand or hugging to encourage another contestant! - It was VERY heartwarming.

Love everything uncle Harley discussed in the video!!!
Suga has mentioned many time in his own talk show that the members are all nice people! When they are together, they have fun! Suga said there are more funny moments than what we can watch online.
We all know Suga is honest and cannot fake his emotion. He had a rough and darker past but when he talks about his members, you can feel his joy and his face gets radiant. I believe he truly appreciates his members who have helped him through a lot of critical states of life.
Another thing uncle Harley did mot mention yet ( he might catch it when he watches more BTS videos) that BTS shares food with each other so often! This is something which is hard to fake and done naturally if not doing regularly. This is the strong proof that the bond between the BTS members is solid strong and close!!!

This was so interesting from a psychological standpoint, thank you! I just thought I'd mention that in the kpop industry, "skinship" a term used to refer to physical intimacy in Korean culture is encouraged among members. Displays of physical affection like hugging, holding hands etc. however, I do believe that the majority of the time, BTS are doing this genuinely. They've been together for over 10 years and they've said that they've spent more time with each other than with their own families. So from quite a young age they've been without their parents for long periods of time and I think it has been necessary for their psychological well being and has resulted in the strong bonds that they have with each other. In my opinion you can see when they're doing it for the public e.g photo shoots and when they're just being themselves, messing around and having fun

I'm pleased that you addressed the continual touching between the boys. They would normally have still been having a hug from their parents when they became trainees and were living far from home so could no longer have physical contact with their family members. They filled the gap with hugging and touching each other. It's particularly noticeable in Jungkook who left home so young, There are some lovely scenes where he is wrapped round J-Hope or RM like a Koala. Listening to Behind the Story those three rappers took on the roles of parent and teacher to the younger ones. Jin took the role of the dad/uncle telling dad jokes to keep up their spirits. Thanks Dr. Harley.

I’d like to share a couple of book recommendations for you. You know that BTS did a two album series based around Karl Jung’s Map of the Soul. Well, psychologist Murray Stein wrote two books, one for each album in which he explores BTS’s interpretation of Jungian psychology. I found it endlessly fascinating, and I think you would also. I believe they are just called Map of the Soul: Persona and Map of the Soul: 7.

I texted my niece and asked “Who is BTS, and why are these guys so comfortable touching each other?” They inspired me to learn about their culture; now I understand how natural it is for them, and I love their genuine affection for each other. They were told when to play, when practice, with mangers and cameras always watching there every move.Put 7boys in one room all with a dream, they will do what is demanded. They all had each other. Today as adults, watching how they paid the price for there dreams. You May wonder how can I share with you my feelings with you. My Family all grown, lots of grandchildren, never alone surrounded by family. In days of much loss,I heard a young man sing a song , with tears I was hooked. It’s changed the last ten years, after being confined and retired after leaving a job once loved. When they younger ARMY, families, Companies could protect. They are now Adult with there own dreams. As adults they are subjected to some criticism that you can see is very hurtful to all the brothers. Military obligations is expected by all, they are proud, and love there Country. I watch them grow and made History, hoping they all 7 know that someone that like you an me will encourage, never discourage. Time goes by fast. would you please talk about V Taehyung of BTS? He is so unusual a person that I wonder what kind of personality inside of him makes him be so very rare. I've never known of a person like him. He is not afraid to be laughed at. He is so handsome yet he doesn't seem to be vain or have pride that makes him want to make sure he always looks handsome in front of the public. He is talented and smart, but will make himself look stupid one moment and brilliant the next.

Dr. Harley, I know this would be a touchy subject with ARMY but I have long thought that Jungkook and possibly V are what we in the United States would call "on the spectrum". I say this with full respect to both of them because many "spectral" people are geniuses (as SUGA calls Jungkook - even though he also jokes about JK's lack of literacy and possible dyslexia. ) As an RN of many years I've seen many behaviors that ARMY calls "shy" - which I would call "socially awkward" or close to Asperger's or ADD. I bet all kinds of ARMY are going to be mad at me for saying this and it is an invasion of BTS' privacy to speculate on diagnoses - but I really see them more as heroes or fine examples of how being different doesn't mean inferior.

Asian cultures value modesty, humility, and showing respect to elders which Westerners may see as shyness or awkwardness. JK and V are also the two youngest members, so they would defer to their elders in many situations. I agree with you that their unique personalities make for some fascinating times and moments of genius!

This cannot be determined without much diagnosis.

Tae, especially, is referred to as having a "4-D Personality" (not behaving within Traditionally Accepted Societal Norms of Shyness, etc) or "Alien". From the representation of Autism on Extraordinary Attorney Woo to other collected observations, I definitely suspect he's on the Autism Spectrum (Like Recognizes Like, after all) 😸
Jungkook's behaviors reflect ADD (stimming, zoning out, rabbit holing on topics of interest, etc).

💜💜💜💜💜💜💜 Yes, like so many others here, I fell in love with BTS as people first, before I really got deeply into their music. It''s kind of insane, isn't it? I think that is why we all feel we know them so intimately. We knew them as "playmates" and friends first, then we discovered how talented they are! At least, that is the way it was for me! Love your videos. I listen to every word and appreciate your wisdom!💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

@@harleyburke1461 I am 56. Been thru quite a bit. It has taken me a while to be where I am mentally. I have figured out what my triggers are for the dark place and I have figured out what I can do so I don't continue down. Yoongi has said about his depression that it never goes away, it just comes in cycles. I agree with that.
