When Manziel snuck out to the bar "disguised" in a wig, I thought it was a joke. But nope! He actually thought no one would recognize him with blonde hair. LMAO!!!
They knew he would sell tickets. He improvised in high school and college, but that doesn't transfer when the pros are the best of the best. All of them
And all those things were going through Joe's head, but he still told people to lay off manziel and give him a chance to prove himself, that's awesome that he is so polite.
I think it started with his first game when they got blown out by the Bengals 30-0. He has one good game against Tennessee in 2015. Blame the owner for insisting that he get in the lineup when they were 7-4 with Brian Hoyer.
Your statement is partially true. As a fan I remember Manziel came in against the bengals and Didn’t know the plays! But hoyer slipped to 7-6 and it was all the media and manziel fans needed to beg for him to play. Of course hoyer would have been better and yes we should have never drafted that idiot in the first place
Yep, add it to the long list of Jimmy Haslam’s “I can’t get out of my own way” events. These also include Josh Gordon and now Watson. Why can’t we just get decent citizens who can play football? Why? Because nobody wants to actually play for the Browns at heart. Except for Joe Thomas. He was and is an exceptional dude!
I think that’s when we as fans knew. Based on the doc, I’d say the Browns knew almost immediately. He was always drunk and almost failed a drug test at the combine. He didn’t watch film even though the team tracked it. His agent said the team told him he had watched 0.0 hours of film. Nightmare draft pick the day he was drafted.
If I were Mike Pettine, I would have dared Jimmy Haslam to fire my ass before I put Johnny Manziel in the game. The Browns were in the middle of a fight for a playoff spot and they should have stuck with Brian Hoyer until the Browns were eliminated from post season contention. You don't change QBs when you are in the middle of a playoff push.
I'm a titans fan and I remember the game from 2015 you're speaking of. Everyone knows that Johnny only won that game because Travis Benjamin absolutely smoked the titans terrible defense that game. Literally any QB could have won that game 😂
He didn't force anyone to draft him in the first round. If he was picked much later or went undrafted, no one would have gotten fired over his poor behavior.
The Netflix show Johnny Football is excellent. Manziel NEVER watched game tape. He was only dedicated to the party life starting long before his pro career. He said being released from the Browns was a "weight off his shoulders". Hopefully he has his life turned around. Thanks to DP for mentioning the show, which is how I discovered it.
I wouldn’t say it’s excellent - it left a lot to be desired on where Johnny is now and post Cleveland Johnny …the high school to college to draft was excellent but it left out so much post NFL - it needed an extra two hours and it was strange ending because we don’t know if he’s okay

It blows my mind that there are NFL QB's who aren't interested in watching game tape. The whole Kyler Murray mandatory film study that was supposedly written into his contract is ridiculous. Brady and Manning have both said that they couldn't watch enough tape.
Joe nailed it. The fact that he went in the first round like tebow is astounding when both were 7th rounders or Free Agents at best. I remember when manziel was there at 16 (Dallas Cowboys slot) and the Cowboys fans wanting and chanting manzeils name but Dallas didn't take manziel. Dallas instead took a hall of fame Guard named Zack Martin.
OL picks are never sexy in the first round and part of the reason is they do not give them more stats. The rumor was the Browns owner took Manziel because a homeless man told him to.
What does winning a Heisman have to do with being drafted in the 1st round. Charlie Ward won the Heisman and never played a single snap of professional football mostly because he was told he would be a late 3-5 round draft pick. However he was picked 26th overall in the 1st round of the 1994 NBA draft by the New York Knicks.
Glad Joe Thomas actually pointed out something relevant as to why Manziel was a bust: he played backyard football in college - do you know how many times he had a perfect pocket created by his offensive line yet the only thing he really knew how to do was scramble out of the pocket and hit a receiver on a broken play. The first time he tried it in the NFL he was intercepted - the same game he threw for only 30 yards. That was basically all he did in college and in the NFL. It was a serious red flag for anyone who actually paid attention to it
Yeah, perhaps. But Mahomes comes from a pro athlete family, and he is insanely driven to succeed it seems and has more natural throwing skill. But I still wonder if Manziel had the same drive as PM, if he could have succeeded. Lot's of pro players do not think so, but I wonder. @@caitlincaitlin4703

This is what I always said. Manziel doesn’t blow up like he did without Evans making him look as good as he did. Toss it up to Evans and he would just come down with it
Obviously you never watched a single aggie game. In 2012 and 2013 a&m had an amazing WR group. Manziel would typically have 9 different WRs in a game with receptions. Only mentioning Evans is an insult to Swope, Kennedy, Nwachukwu, Walker, Holmes, and Labhart.
While he was describing all of Johnny manziel's physical limitations I completely thought for a minute that he was talking about Baker Mayfield. I guess the difference between the two is Baker is fired up to be somebody in the NFL while Manziel couldn't really care less and would be fine with just being a celebrity. I'm sure he would love to be a star quarterback but he doesn't want to put out the effort that it would take to do that. Baker Mayfield probably does put out that effort but he's a limited quarterback physically just like Johnny Manziel.

I thought it was a great documentary. Showed how he felt and what he went through in Cleveland. Also, it showed how nobody was willing to hold him ACCOUNTABLE at A&M. The doc still seemed to wanna deflect blame from Johnny to his being a product of his environment. Why did they only really interview people within Johnny's circle? Nobody within the Browns organization was interviewed about him or that era. No teammates from A&M were. Just his close circle of friends and family (and yes Kliff is a friend at this point)
What Joe Thomas says makes perfect sense, and I totally accept that his perspective is the right one. I thought Manziel was an obnoxious, self-centered jerkoff from the start. And as Thomas says, Manziel was essentially playing backyard football and trying to make it work in the NFL without really trying to expand or improve on his skills or his leadership. Sure, he had a few flashy plays here and there, but it was in the context of disrespect for his teammates and the game. He went nowhere before long, and that's where he belongs.
This is probably why he got voted in: everything he went through in Cleveland, and with the sheer amount of talent he had...we are forever grateful, Joe. If Deshaun somehow wins us a title, the Browns brass need to get you fitted for a ring as well. They owe you that much!
I saw him out around LA at the various nightclubs, knew he would never make it in the NFL. He was more interested in the fame part than the football part.
Joe brought up a really good point about Manziel’s limitations. The backyard football stuff works in college but all the good/great QBs in the NFL when Manziel entered had qualities Manziel didn’t have: - Rodgers & Stafford had better arm talent - Cam Newton was bigger & faster - Brees was a better refined passer & pocket QB - Brady, Roethlisberger, Ryan, & Rivers were all taller & could take the hits Joe is talking about as well as see over a D-Line The closest comp to Manziel was probably going to be Russell Wilson, but even he had better arm talent to make up for his height limitations. Not sure what the Browns were thinking even if Manziel didn’t have the off-field issues
I always thought the browns wanted to sell tabloid headlines rather than being a mediocre team. They had Holcomb and Hoyer who were both serviceable guys who could win 6-9 games a year, but they would rather create a Trainwreck and blow it all up.
The Browns in 2014 were in the middle of a playoff push at 7-4 with Brian Hoyer at QB before they decided to put Manziel at QB. Mike Pettine should have dared Jimmy Haslam to fire him before changing QBs while the Browns were still in playoff contention and Hoyer was still healthy to play.
His scouting report on what he thought about Manziel aside from his antics to me was SPOT ON! I will always say that college football was DOWN the year he won the Heisman. Chris Kline and Mantae Tao other nominees that year…. Pppppphhhhh 😂😂
I'm really glad that Mr. Thomas said this. For a future Hall of Fame veteran like that, it has to be incredibly discouraging to watch your franchise draft some guy in the first round who the odds were stacked against. As he noted, there were so many checkmarks in the "cons" column and few-to-none in the "pros" column. While physical limitations can be overcome, having a weak worth ethic combined w/ an inability and complete lack of experience playing system football made Manziel who was never, ever going to make it in the League. At no point did he ever have what it took nor was he willing to work for it. It was a lose-lose situation.
As a Clevelander and life long Browns fan, the manziel and Josh Gordon days were bottom of the barrel and then we had Ray Farmer as gm who was texting coaches during the game to put Johnny in. Between these three guys the off field distractions where at there worst. Ya the 1-31 era was bad but the Browns were kinda sucking on purpose to get high draft picks, but it was those two Manziel years that were so painful to be a Browns fan because of all the bs happening off the field. i adore joe thomas, even as a ravens fan, and i get being blunt because his scouting take was very well said. but he acts as though it was all in johnny's control. ok, well, it was - but only to an extent. what i'm trying to say is that for the past couple of years i've dealt with anxiety, depression, etc. as a result of untreated ADHD. before all of this happened, i would've jumped on johnny in the same way. we all say "oh i would've done this or that if i were in this situation", but after going through this, i've realized that people can't really understand it until they experience it first hand. it almost permanently changes a person, and sometimes we have to go to rock bottom to really understand who we are. someone can get into a place that's so dark & deep and do things consciously but not get the gravity of it towards the end, and once someone gets into that place, it doesn't matter what talents or advantages they have, it's a wrap. this is why the nfl should do screenings on every player in the pre-draft process, because most of them come from tough backgrounds, and coaching staffs/GMs should put mechanisms in place to work around those limitations. tldr: i wish society had more empathy for conditions like this, and i pray that nobody else in these comments faces it. and if y'all do, i am always happy to be a listener, because NOBODY should have to suffer in silence. it's more complicated than people think.
Manziel was one of the worst cases of scouting, even by the lowly standards of the Cleveland Browns, in history. There have been many busts, but his flaws and limitations were glaring even to casual observers. Joe Thomas is correct. He wasn't big, wasn't fast, didn't have an apex arm, wasn't cerebral, had never played in structure, his personal baggage--the parties, drugs, alcohol, laziness--was well known. What the hell were they looking at? At least dudes like JaMarcus Russell had incredible physical traits. Manziel nada.
In regards to Joe’s assessment of Johnny’s physical traits and capabilities as a quarterback, what does that tell you about the Cleveland Browns scouts, draft analysts, general manager, assistant, coaches, head coach?
In games Manziel started in 2015 the Browns went 2-4, while in all other games from 2015-2017 Browns were 2-40. The Browns entire org was dreadful. Johnny was actually the most winning QB over a 3-year period while only starting 6 games during that period....LOL.
Ppl mature at different rates. Manziel in Cleveland still had alot of kid in him. He needed more time in college. And he was wrong Manziel was super quick. He was more athletic than ppl think. Watch when he played vs Alabama. He shredded them
He was way more athletic than a lot of nfl QBs . I mean those sane freak nfl athletes come from college system . I mean Alabama was loaded with nfl prospects per the usual and he kicked their ass
@francisikwueme1688 I think Thomas just isn't a big fan of Manziel. Which is understandable. I'm sure Thomas is a little bitter about his time with Browns. He was truly great and his career was largely meaningless as Browns were not really competitive
Have to hand it to Manziel, he never had what it took to make it in the NFL and I think he even knew it. But he had an amazing agent and somehow got him drafted in the 1st round. Manziel got paid almost $20 million for doing pretty much nothing. Pretty amazing. If anything the Netflix documentary showed how incredible his agent was 🤣 and is probably a good sales pitch.
Usually, headlines are sensational. Here. The headline could have read Joe Thomas, eviscerates Johnny Manziel and been actually honest. But he kept all the points he made clean and above the belt
Browns went 2-4 when Johnny started in 2015, while in all other games from 2015-2017 Browns were 2-40. Johnny's off the field problems are well documented but the dude could play. Even partying Manziel who only started 6 games for the Browns in 2015 was the most winning Browns QB over a 3 year period.
Let's not forget that johnny came along at the start of the RPO offense where running qbs were killing defenses. If you look at that bama tape the defense is lost. Same with RG3, defenses hadn't caught up. He was indeed athletic but not NFL athletic and it showed quickly in the NFL. Plus the coaches adjusted to the running qbs.
I don’t know. I think I’m going to trust the word of a nfl hall of famer and someone who was his teammate. College level defenses don’t sniff the jockstrap of NFL defenses.
Manziel was awful. And he did not have the athleticism for the CFL, either. I don't see how he did his thing versus Alabama, e.g. SEC defenders respected him. But a leopard does not change its spots, as Browns Coach Sam Rutigliano used to say. The drafting of Manziel betrayed a gigantic blind hole in the Browns' organization. A terrible front office.
The one thing about A&M's offense during Manziel's time that made me really doubt how he'd do in the NFL, was that so many plays would turn into playground football. Everything would break down and Johnny would elude and then make some ridiculous odd angle pass that would hit the mark. It was amazing to watch. Then you realize that way too many plays were unstructured and broke down like that to the extent that it was almost Johnny creating it by design to play to his strengths. And because it worked, Sumlin allowed him to pretty much do whatever the hell he wanted out there. But unstructured, and allowing plays to break down by design was never, ever going to work in the NFL where defenses are not only disciplined, but much, much faster, smarter, and complex. I'm not certain he really knew how to process and execute a structured offensive strategy. He refused to study an NFL playbook, because I'm pretty sure he didn't really have to know any playbook up to that point all that well, since so much of his game was improvisation, and WRs breaking off their routes to try and follow his lead.
Johnny football was never a pro never deserved to be a pro. He was a college star yeah...many of them are gimmick QBs that why they suck in the NFL. Johnny sucked as a QB, sucked as a person. Yet ppl defend this idiot

Yeah, he didn't have a great arm, great release, height, toughness, demonstrated ability to play in a pro offense, so he didn't look like a great prospect. For all that, some guys just find a way to be great with all the limitations someone like a Manziel had. Joe Thomas was a really class act as a player on a somewhat lacking Browns team. I feel bad that he never got a chance to really be on a promising team. He is the epitome of a real sportsman and a true professional, but he's in the HOF where he deserves to be. Congratulations sir.
Somewhat lacking? The browns were trash every season he played there.
He git paid. It's was a great career.
This is called “putting it kindly”.
Nicest way Joe could say the Browns had no clue how to scout.
When Manziel snuck out to the bar "disguised" in a wig, I thought it was a joke. But nope! He actually thought no one would recognize him with blonde hair. LMAO!!!
That just goes to show how dedicated he was to partying over football.🍺🍻🥃🍷🏈
And he told all his entourage to refer to him as "Billy" so that no one they met would know it was Johnny.
Class act human and Player.
Hearing him just check off the Manziel’s limitations, it makes one wonder how anyone ever thought he was a first rounder.
The “It” factor would be the only reason. He had no sustainable skills or work ethic, but apparently “It” would eliminate all those concerns
They knew he would sell tickets. He improvised in high school and college, but that doesn't transfer when the pros are the best of the best. All of them
Same for Kyler Murray!
Joe Thomas deserved to play for a better organization.
Dudes attitude n mouth exceeded his talent by a long shot!!!!!
And all those things were going through Joe's head, but he still told people to lay off manziel and give him a chance to prove himself, that's awesome that he is so polite.
What Joe’s trying to say is, nobody was going mistake this guy for Fran Tarkington.
Joe is a real superstar on and off the field! Drafting a guy like that is like winning the lotto!
..and the Browns proved winning the lotto the 2nd time is impossible.

I don’t have much sympathy. He got a lot of people fired because he acted like a child. Costs people careers and resumes.
He also made a lot of people a lot of money. Like the coaches at atm.
yeah but you could flip it and also say he got a lot of people jobs and created a lot of money for people

The Netflix show Johnny Football is excellent. Manziel NEVER watched game tape. He was only dedicated to the party life starting long before his pro career.

If the Browns had done their homework, they’d have known I was lazy-Johnny Manziel on the Oprah show.

It was a serious red flag for anyone who actually paid attention to it
Yeah, but it was must see tv on Saturdays for a while...so fun to watch. Sort of still can't believe at A&M it was that unstructured of a game plan.
he was supposed to be what patrick mahomes is today. how fast was mahomes?
Yeah, perhaps. But Mahomes comes from a pro athlete family, and he is insanely driven to succeed it seems and has more natural throwing skill. But I still wonder if Manziel had the same drive as PM, if he could have succeeded. Lot's of pro players do not think so, but I wonder. @@caitlincaitlin4703

As a Browns fan, I thought the Manziel fanboys were morons then
that was the Best take on Manziel someone could say
Mike Evans really made Manziel look good in college.
Evans helped but Manziel was electric.
This is what I always said. Manziel doesn’t blow up like he did without Evans making him look as good as he did. Toss it up to Evans and he would just come down with it
Manziel was elite in college. I don't like him but he would have still excelled in college without Evans.
I think Baker has a big arm but, I could be wrong.

I thought it was a great documentary. Showed how he felt and what he went through in Cleveland. Also, it showed how nobody was willing to hold him ACCOUNTABLE at A&M. He was in rehab BEFORE the draft. He went from military style football in high school to college coaches letting him do WHATEVER HE WANTED. Hell even the president of the school didn’t care 😆! Shows him living life in Arizona chilling out. His sister says he is still not in a good enough headspace to go out and work on a project etc.. For the better, you can just tell he is so much better without football. After all, he said he felt the “weight lifted off of his shoulders when the browns let him go”.
Tbh they let him do what he wanted in HS
He is a generic substance abuser and not much more. No hate because I had my days of that too, but then you grow up. More than likely he will have a short life. All of my childhood friends that did not grow up had short life’s. It’s to bad he never even tried, not at football but life.
Haha
@pepesilvia exactly… no interviews from his former teammates and other coaches…
I remember him taking a fishing trip on draft day. Time flies
The backyard football stuff works in college but all the good/great QBs in the NFL when Manziel entered had qualities Manziel didn’t have:
- Rodgers & Stafford had better arm talent
- Cam Newton was bigger & faster
- Brees was a better refined passer & pocket QB
- Brady, Roethlisberger, Ryan, & Rivers were all taller & could take the hits Joe is talking about as well as see over a D-Line
The closest comp to Manziel was probably going to be Russell Wilson, but even he had better arm talent to make up for his height limitations.
Nailed it
His scouting report on what he thought about Manziel aside from his antics to me was SPOT ON!
All the more impressive for guys like joe to continue to do his part regardless of what was going on. We all felt horrible for you buddy!

i adore joe thomas, even as a ravens fan, and i get being blunt because his scouting take was very well said. but he acts as though it was all in johnny's control. ok, well, it was - but only to an extent.
what i'm trying to say is that for the past couple of years i've dealt with anxiety, depression, etc. as a result of untreated ADHD. before all of this happened, i would've jumped on johnny in the same way. we all say "oh i would've done this or that if i were in this situation", but after going through this, i've realized that people can't really understand it until they experience it first hand. it almost permanently changes a person, and sometimes we have to go to rock bottom to really understand who we are. someone can get into a place that's so dark & deep and do things consciously but not get the gravity of it towards the end, and once someone gets into that place, it doesn't matter what talents or advantages they have, it's a wrap. this is why the nfl should do screenings on every player in the pre-draft process, because most of them come from tough backgrounds, and coaching staffs/GMs should put mechanisms in place to work around those limitations.
tldr: i wish society had more empathy for conditions like this, and i pray that nobody else in these comments faces it. and if y'all do, i am always happy to be a listener, because NOBODY should have to suffer in silence. it's more complicated than people think.
This is the first I ever heard about a Manziel documentary
Figures that Cleveland would draft him
Manziel was one of the worst cases of scouting, even by the lowly standards of the Cleveland Browns, in history.
So many people said the same thing and yet the browns execs saw a superstar. All you need to know about the browns. They didn’t deserve Joe Thomas.
Merril Hoge said it best about Johnny Manziel, before Manziel was drafted. This guy is a bust, especially if he's drafted in the 1st round.
In regards to Joe’s assessment of Johnny’s physical traits and capabilities as a quarterback, what does that tell you about the Cleveland Browns scouts, draft analysts, general manager, assistant, coaches, head coach?
They went with ticket sales over performance otherwise they would have drafted Bridgewater
He shredded them
The only thing Manziel was super quick about was his exit from the NFL.
I don't know if him in college was any better

I agree with everything except the athletic ability, it's impossible to lead the sec in rushing and not be athletic
Agreed, he ran like a 4.6 40 and was insanely agile for a qb.
I agree also you don't win the Heisman trophy being non athletic lol. The guy was a selfish punk though
From DeShawn to Johnny to mediocre, hopefully this team will make a better comeback this season.
Alabama defense played into his style . they didn’t emphasize Speed at lb/de like they do now
I think it’s clear that Mike Evans made him.

Joe Thomas is a classy guy much respect for him always Johnny wadd f u man got a lot of money for the party boy ruined many.
Let’s pile on…..they were losing before him and still losing well after. But it’s Johnny

To say Johnny had a lot of physical limitations is a stretch. Joe shits on him by saying he was slow and mediocre in summary of all his statements. He’s got a bone to pick with Johnny with the tone he takes. Johnny was actually very quick on his feet and clever. Even defenses make mention of how they were going on chases in the games they played. The interviewee sounds salty yet happy it didn’t work out for Johnny. It didn’t work out for Johnny because Johnny self sabotaged otherwise it would’ve if Johnny would’ve taken the responsibility that came with the job well and adapted to the new lifestyle. I’m not defending Johnny, but pointing out that the only one who stopped Johnny from being successful was Johnny himself. He had all the means to be successful. He just lost sight of and drive for the plan to succeed and underestimated the responsibilities and change in lifestyles that came with the contract he signed when he got drafted.

Other than being short, slow, having a long wind-up, having weak to average arm strength , not being fully commited, not even opening up the play book, being an alcoholic and being a drug addict, Johnny Manziel would have been a great QB. Even though he was a total disaster for the Browns, I don't care what anyone says, but Johnny Manziel was the single most exciting and fun to watch college footbal player ever (especially as an unknown freshman playing for a school in its first year of competition in the SEC).
Their is some quick insight for anyone scouting the NFL. Supreme athletic ability, commitment to the team, and a high football IQ. When a guy has none of those, pretty sure there is no reason to draft him in the first round.
I just watched it. I LOVED him in college. Absolutely HATE him now.
Yeah, he didn't have a great arm, great release, height, toughness, demonstrated ability to play in a pro offense, so he didn't look like a great prospect. For all that, some guys just find a way to be great with all the limitations someone like a Manziel had. But of course those guys were fanatically committed to playing the game at the highest level which enabled them to overcome their limitations. Not so with Johnny, however.
