    What unique about cute characters in Japan is that it’s not considered as childish or feminine. Women and men at any age genuinely find the kawaii-ness make it approachable, relatable and sincere.

      Yes! I've spotted some good ones. I like how it's an opportunity to add a local design, to something that would otherwise be so plain and functional. :-)

    3:33 is Taito-kun (台東くん), mascot of Taito ward (where Ueno is) - I think it was created by Bandai as they are based in Taito.
    3:56 did you try going on a Toei bus? The seat moquette has various Minkuru patterns on them, it's great! You'll also find Minkuru's partner Toaran all around the Toei Subway and Toden Arakawa Line (they're all run by Toei Transportation).
    6:12 is Piipo-kun (ピーポくん), mascot of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department.
    6:41 is Keisei Panda (京成パンダ), mascot of Keisei, one of the many train operators in Tokyo.
    You'll find much greater use of "local characters" in the lesser-known wards of Tokyo, for example Arakawa; and even moreso in a lot of the smaller cities nearby e.g. in Saitama, Kanazawa, Chiba and Tochigi prefectures - they all have loads of them!

    • @cakeswithfaces
      @cakeswithfaces  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the mascot IDs! :-) I haven't been on the buses, but the seat patterns make me want to see them! I recognise Toaran, I spotted him (or her?) dressed up in a witch's hat for Halloween once!

    In Coventry (where I went to uni) there are elephants everywhere - The little ones on the top of bollards were particularly noticable. The Main sports hall beside teh university was built (with considerable imagination required) to look like an elephant as well. The hall was on stilts, that were his legs. buildings on stilts were also a weirdly common sight in coventry as well. There was also a little, hidden away, statue of Peeping Tom (from teh Lady Godiva of Coventry legend) in the main shopping center.

    • @cakeswithfaces

      I've seen that sports hall - you're right it does take a lot of imagination to see the elephant!! :-) I wonder if there's a reason for all the elephants..?

    I thing it is amazing, and I love it cause it will make me smile every time I looked at them if they do the same thing in my country. That sign in the metro, the priority seats, is the sign for future mothers, the government give them to the women that are going to be mothers as a brooch or pin, and so everybody knows that and help them or give them their seat, or so. I think this is an awesome idea and everycountry must do that.
