I lived in NY for over 30 years, most of my friends were all Giants/Jets fans. I became a fan of the Niners in 1981 and have been a fan since then. To me personally, the 49ers symbolize Tradition, Winning Culture and a level of Excellence that many other teams wish they had. The team of the 80’s what great memories. Bill Walsh was a DaVinci when he came up with the West Coast offense. Go Niners!!!🎉❤
I moved to the Bay Area in 1979 and I was there for it all. What beautiful timing. I will forever treasure those years. Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Steve young. Dwight clark. WOW. (I met Dwight and talked to him about the famous "Catch".) I has a brand new VHS recorder and taped the Dallas playoff game and then the first super bowl. I must have re-watched it 50 times. What great memories.

Got to tell you, I've seen some of the highlight films for the 49ers in the late 50s and early 60s, games I saw as a little kid on tv when they played away games, and the offense was very, very advanced under Red Hickey, then coach. He installed the shotgun formation for instance. The use of slot backs/wing backs was very inventive. He wasn't just using the so-called "pro set."
I was 7 years old in 1981 and beating the Cowterds in that NFC Championship game was my first real football memory. I watched all the games with my parents but that game was it for me. I spent all the following years watching my hero, Joe Montana do the most incredible things on the field. I even became a Chiefs fan for a couple years! I had a hard time after Joe left and stepped away from football for a while, a long while actually. I came back though when I heard about a 7th round QB picking up the ball. I swear what I am watching now takes me right back to 1981 and all the years after. Crazy how history repeats itself. I see a lot of Joe in Purdy and I think we are witnessing the next great QB, just getting started.
What a Genius Walsh was! Ahead of his time and inspiring video to watch. I lived and grew up in SF during these times. It’s hard to win Superbowls but at the time I thought this was a regular thing the niners did in the 80s. Little did I know it was a special time in history.
Coach John Madden had a great quote that applied to the 49ers when they started to win but really applies to any sporting situation. He said: “Winning is a great deodorant because it covers up the stinch of losing”. The 49ers definitely proved this to be true in the 1980’s and even into the mid-90’s a Steve Young’s Super Bowl win!
You had to be there as a resident of the Bay Area to understand and appreciate how big of a deal it was to have the Niners win in 81. San Francisco as a city had been through so much in the 70s - completely torn apart from the Zodiac to the Zebra murders, Jim Jones People's Temple massacre, political corruption, Dan White murdering Mayor Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk and the beginning of the AIDS epidemic. The 49ers brought the entire city together again at just the right time. What a memorable season it was. Go Niners!
XVI was the first game I ever watched. They won again a few years after that and at ten I was still too young to really know that they were my team. But in XXIII they were my team. I was fourteen and it was great to see my team win. Hopefully this new Niner team can carry with it some of that magic and beat the Chiefs.

What I really like about Bill's approach to coaching his players is that he doesn't yell, give "Ra Ra" speeches, nor is he quietly stoic like a Landry. He just talks to his players like they're coworkers, recognizes what they did well and builds them up. Although, he seemed like a perfectionist at practices.
It sounds great what you're saying but I have to push back - I don't think it's entirely true: There was a rough, more ruthless side to BIll - He was honest about it - I think. It sounds like: BUt players such as Randy Cross said "Hey he straight up told me, 'You won't finish your career here.... I want your good years"" Dwight Clark also was mad at him for a few years - he moved on from Dwight as he did for numerous players in sometimes what seemed like cutthroat fashion... Some players like "Woody" said he'd get real tough and make everyone uncomfortable by threatening guys such as Rathman saying "Hey this is n't college - you're not on Scholarship - we don't have to keep you" when he fumbled in practice. OR maybe it was in a game Point is: Bill had an amazing way of being a leader: Relating to the guys, making them laugh at his jokes... but then using that "unity" from the laughter etc to get them more cohesive for a common goal - to take all their jobs seriously .... It's a great lesson in leadership. And i'm grateful Bill started the Bill Walsh Minority Coach's program. A very necessary idea... even today.

After watching "Cool Under Pressure" the Joe Montana documentary series on Peacock, it made me realize how ruthless Bill could be. Pitting a guy who had just won you two superbowls under this up and coming QB named Steve Young is disrespect if I'm Joe. But here's the twist, Steve was told by Bill that Joe was broken down, his back is too damaged, and you'll be the starter just so Bill could get him to SF. Steve arrives, sees Joe looking like Joe and Steve turns to Bill and Bill shrugs as if to say "my bad". Walsh had that successor plan mindset and wanted to get the best out of both players, but it backfired on him with Steve and Joe. Bill had designated games for Steve to start while Joe was fine. This caused turmoil in the lockerroom. Ronnie Lott alludes to it in an interview when he compares Steve and Joe. But can you imagine that happening today? Mike Holmgren, thank god, had the balls to say to Bill, "What your doing is killing the lockerroom. You need to pick one and stick with it." Bill did and it worked, we went to back to back Superbowls. We almost 3 peated with Joe. Most importantly, it made me realize something about leadership. It's a burden and it's a lonely life. You have to be willing to endure anything to even get an opportunity to hoist a trophy. To be a leader, is to accept that there is no victory without sacrifice. Bill sacrificed time and personal relationships he had had with players for years who went to war for him. It's not that he was just ruthless. He was many things as you pointed out that made him a GENIUS head coach (not just the Xs and Os). There are no championships if you're sentimental. To win championships, is to cut out everything holding you back and that comes with a cost as I've mentioned.

Walsh changed the way NFL played offense and won 4 SB in the process with at least 2 of those teams being very underrated. I take him over Bill B, any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Not to mention a 5th SB win with a new coach.
Good call from a Husker & Bears fan. Craig's Sr year at NE, Rozier was the Big Headline and Craig moved to FB....he sacrificed but it made him NFL ready and Rozier fizzled with the USFL. Bill Walsh liked NE Running Backs so i rooted for the 49ers if they weren't playing the Bears. Too bad the Steelers didn't take Marino, i think Dan would have multiple rings.

I was born in 1989 and had season tickets from a baby until they moved to Santa Clara. It was great to see our history and what a dynasty we are. I was honored to meet Mr. WALSH at the Dutch goose in Menlo Park 2 weeks before his passing. Rip Bill. Time for a new dynasty in SF. I hope the new players watch this and can get some inspiration to revive the legacy

Bradshaw and Montana played back when NFL didn't have the like 20-30 penalties a game called crap just for breathing on QBs and Receivers which started in the 1990's which later sucky way over pampered QBs Brady, Manning and Mahomes have very much benefitted from. The crap appears to be the same Officiating problem with every Sport since the 1990's. Especially since 2000.
Players werent seen as the assets they are today. Joe Montana ended his career and had dozens of surgeries since. Those guys were also juiced to the gills and on other substances.
Leonard Marshall’s hit on Montana ended the chance of a legendary possibility of the first 3 peat in Super Bowl history and with it came the end of the Montana era in San Francisco 49ers history!

Pretty simple is Roger would be in much more danger as he was already admittedly suffering from what was Post Concussion Syndrome and played most of the last stretch of 79' with it very bad. Considering his life thereafter he had a great run anymore would just leave him in a similar situation of Jim Plunkett of constant headaches and ringing.

Faithful since '68. I dislike Roger Craig immensely. Despite his personal highlights and HOF credentials, he gave up, layed down the ball against the Giants and gave away the 49er's opportunity to make history and win 3 Super Bowls in a row. UNFORGIVABLE!
Ronnie Lott… He was a great 49er, gave his everything and left everything out on the field, but god blessed, he was the WORST tackler in the NFL! He never wrapped up! He created the horrible high shoulder/launch yourself into a player tackle… Kids would always try and emulate his style - and they’d fail all the time! I would have to always coach… teach my defensive players to NEVER, EVER try ant “tackle” like Ronnie Lott. I’d tell my defensive players that they would NEVER play for my defense if I ever saw them try and “tackle” like Ronnie Lott! That style, was absolutely atrocious, but he got away with it. And that style, is now banned on every level of football! Ronnie created a style that was only his… and thankfully for him, he got away with it… but it was atrocious “tackling!”

What a decade! It made up for the mediocrity of the previous two decades, the 60s and 70s, when the 49ers could beat the Lombardi Packers (1961/'66, and tie them in '65) but never the Unitas led Colts, from 1963 to 68, and then would blow games against the Steelers (1961), or even an expansion team now and then. They'd be in first place half way through seasons only to go on losing streaks (1961, 1967, 1976). Montana and Walsh saved the 49ers from the depths of the league, as they'd become cellar dwellers in the late 70s.

Bradshaw and Montana played back when NFL didn't have the like 20-30 penalties a game called crap just for breathing on QBs and Receivers which started in the 1990's which later sucky way over pampered QBs Brady, Manning and Mahomes have very much benefitted from. The crap appears to be the same Officiating problem with every Sport since the 1990's. Especially since 2000.
Players werent seen as the assets they are today. Joe Montana ended his career and had dozens of surgeries since. Those guys were also juiced to the gills and on other substances.

Pretty simple is Roger would be in much more danger as he was already admittedly suffering from what was Post Concussion Syndrome and played most of the last stretch of 79' with it very bad. Faithful since '68. I dislike Roger Craig immensely. Despite his personal highlights and HOF credentials, he gave up, layed down the ball against the Giants and gave away the 49er's opportunity to make history and win 3 Super Bowls in a row. UNFORGIVABLE!
Ronnie Lott… He was a great 49er, gave his everything and left everything out on the field, but god blessed, he was the WORST tackler in the NFL! He never wrapped up! He created the horrible high shoulder/launch yourself into a player tackle… Kids would always try and emulate his style - and they’d fail all the time! I would have to always coach… teach my defensive players to NEVER, EVER try ant “tackle” like Ronnie Lott. I’d tell my defensive players that they would NEVER play for my defense if I ever saw them try and “tackle” like Ronnie Lott! That style, was absolutely atrocious, but he got away with it. And that style, is now banned on every level of football! Ronnie created a style that was only his… and thankfully for him, he got away with it… but it was atrocious “tackling!”

It made up for the mediocrity of the previous two decades, the 60s and 70s, when the 49ers could beat the Lombardi Packers (1961/'66, and tie them in '65) but never the Unitas led Colts, from 1963 to 68, and then would blow games against the Steelers (1961), or even an expansion team now and then. They'd be in first place half way through seasons only to go on losing streaks (1961, 1967, 1976). Montana and Walsh saved the 49ers from the depths of the league, as they'd become cellar dwellers in the late 70s.
