  • Fishing for large bluefish finning and cruising in shallow water! In this video we go sight fishing for large bluefish using fly rods and pencil poppers during the month of May on Long Island, NY.
    The key to this type of fishing is to locate the fish on top and cast to the larger fish, but you have to be selective because often these bigger fish are schooling with smaller ones that will charge your fly or plug before the big one can get to it.
    In this video you'll see what we look for and how we present our flies to big fish to trigger a strike. Remember to be careful when handling large bluefish, they have sharp teeth and are very strong.
    Hope you get your self a nice trophy bluefish!

    I wish our Bluefish ( or Tailor as known here in Australia) were as big as that....

      Hi, yes they are tough fighters, we're lucky to get them that big, but you have some pretty awesome fish in Australia that we look forward to catching one day! Tight lines 🤙

    Nice footage. I use the 7 strand 30# leaders also for blues.

      Good stuff dude, I find that 20 lasts me most of the day, maybe a change or two but 30# sounds solid!

      Bluefish can be found in many public beaches like Jones Beach and Robert Moses State Parks early season and later on in the summer on the East end from East Hampton to Montauk. Keep an eye for reports and then make your travel plans. Good luck!

    Excelent footage. Is this the orvus clearwater 9wt? Whats your opinion on the rod and what line u use on it?

      Thank you, the two fly rods I use on this video are the Sage Motive (blue one) with the floating line and the Loomis GLX with intermediate line both 9wt. The Orvis clear water is a good rod, and it won't break the bank. If you want great rod and great price look at the Rise rods: www.risefishing.com/

    Can I catch blues on a 9wt rod with a 8wt reel with 9wt line I know it sounds dumb but it’s all I got

    • @SergioDiazFishing
      @SergioDiazFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, your line and rod match, zero problem using it, you may suffer a little on the backing in your reel, because its designed for 8wt line, but most likely you'll never miss a yard of backing. These bluefish and even striped bass, as powerful as they are they will not run hundreds of yards like other pelagic fish do. Good luck and let me know how you do!
