  • At one time, the mentally ill were not looked upon with much compassion or understanding. Instead, they were an embarrassment to their families or simply thought to be useless to society. During the 1800’s, with the increase interest in psychotherapy, mental hospitals (aka insane asylums) began to show up across the country. The State of Connecticut holds claim to the first mental hospital of its kind, and is still successfully operating today, serving the mental health needs and addiction services of its residents and outpatients.
Its well maintained 100 acres, holds about 70 buildings with lots of green open space for aesthetic appeal and old charm. To the back of the campus, on a dirt road, sits the hospital patient cemetery where 1,700 patients have been laid to rest, each with a simple stone marker with a number etched in the granite. No name. Just an anonymous number.
Luckily, a group of compassionate individuals decided to research and put a name to the grave numbers and later, were able to commemorate each person on a beautiful monument in the front of the cemetery.
Since this cemetery is part of the hospital campus, it is watched over by security. However, respectful visitors and the curious are welcome.
