Listening to Mako recite the intro speech in Barbarian was a wonderful thing. Gruff and low and hung on the words and gave a sense of some epic adventure afoot. By comparison in Destroyer he sounds like he was late for a coffee break and quickly rushed the lines out with no real feeling. One of a lot of things that sums up the differences between the movies.

John Milius (director of Barbarian) loved the source material and was a master of screenwriting - he wrote much of the Indianapolis speech for Quint in Jaws, he wrote the screenplay for Apocalypse Now and the Kurtz speech...so it makes a difference when you have a man like that directing actors. You noticed it right here in the same actor, Mako, same narration - but different direction.

Well, imo in first Conan soundtrack was significantly better. The new one doesn't have the feeling of epicness and brutality which OST from Conan the Barbarian had.
I think the two Conan films balance each other well. The first was gritty and more 'real' if you want to put it that way, while the second was more adventurous and fun. I think they play off of each other well and are both immensely enjoyable in their own right.
The first one is his origin story and first adventure, and the setup showing the Hyborian civilization and age. The second one is one of his many later adventures. The second movie is unfairly maligned because it is or was intended to be an episode in a longer story arc, not the second and climactic resolve of a two movie series. Or whatever. It is an episode of high adventure taken from one of his many, and thus it stands on its own right. The gritty more philosophical and epic first movie is also balanced by its lighter tone. Much like Hercules and the Captive women and "Good natured" brawling and muscleman jocular yet fun jokes.

Epic opening soundtrack, isn't it? Still miles ahead and above most sh!t that comes out of that cesspool called Hollywood these days... But, alas, the music is a bit too fast. When I hear it, I feel like J.K. Simmon's "Whiplash" character and say "not quite my tempo". I guess it reflects the new nature of the film, more of a typical 80's action romp and less of a true dark, gritty, deep and heavy sword & sandal orchestral-like classic like the first. But it's a shame, isn't it? The first Conan is - IMO - one of the greatest films ever made and an absolutely timeless classic with what is probably the most powerful soundtrack of all time and this second movie, while still good and enjoyable, is not nearly on the same level. The music also reflects that. It is just that tad bit too fast, much like the action itself. Even Mako's speech is delivered a bit too fast. Notice the riders during the intro... it's as if they were sped up in post production. It is no surprise, then, that for me the best part of this music is when they show the riders in slow motion (at about 1:25 minutes in). The music also slows down a bit and the camera work improves dramatically. I love the slow-mo slide-shots of that 1:25 to 2:20 period, showcasing some very good shots and sounds of that regal-looking and noble animal that graciously let itself be domesticated: the horse. But even during that small inter-piece of the music, the tempo is still too fast. I tried listening to it all in 0.75 speed - as TH-cam allows - but then it becomes too slow. I guess that the right tempo would be at around 0.80 to 0.85. The music would sound a lot more epic and consequentially have a lot more gravitas. The movie itself could do without the buffoonish characters (oh, Subotai! You are sorely missed!), without the comic relief, without the cartoonish 2D character development and should have more grit and depth. A missed opportunity, it seemed, but I guess it stemmed from the unfair and unfounded criticism that the almost flawless first film got at the time (the film was far ahead [or perhaps behind?] of its time. It still is). The story itself is not bad. It's not exactly WHAT was made but more HOW it was made that I have a personal gripe with. Well... just my two cents, worth exactly that and never more.
1. Crom rewarded Conan for his brazen conviction in the last movie. 2. Even if your God doesn't answer your prayers very often, they still deserve your reverence. 3. He's likely praying for Valeria, his lost love.

Basically, this opening blends the theme of Destroyer (aka The Riders of Taramis) with the original theme from Barbarian (Anvil of Crom). It's a pity more of Anvil of Crom isn't peppered into the movie. But the opening music sequence is just perfect!
You can feel, when the conan the barbarian theme appears (2:30) that this movie score (and even the movie itself) was less deep than the previous film. There is a huge contrast!

This movie introduced me to the fantasy genre. I remember when I was around 8-10 years of age, and watched conan the destroyer on tv. I loved it. After that my dad bought me Conan comics and Lord of the Rings books.
The difference between Conan 1, and 2 is as stark as the difference between Jaws 1 and 2. You can’t just throw in a bunch of wizards and sword fights, and replace what John Milius did.
I don't know, it's still good, although Mako did kind of rush through the reading of this part of the script it seems. But it's hardly terrible as many of you suggest. As far as comparing to the original movie, it's scarcely wise to just slap it on the sequel for good measure. I like both movies for their tale.

Agreed Donald.. No surprise that this section of the intro 2:33 - 2:52 is actually lifted from the soundtrack to the first movie. This one is good, but the first one is EPIC!

Most of this movie was 'ass'. They replaced Subotai with a caucasian fool, introduced a ridiculous spoiled American teen as a period princess and they showed Mako being roasted over a fire as if he was a spitroast, straight out of a shitty comic. And that's just what comes to mind.
You knew you were in trouble when Mako basically phones in the epic intro... whoo boy. I can accept a lot from Fantasy movie, suspend my disbelief for almost anything... but Wilt Chamberlain protecting the virginity of a pretty young woman is totally unbelievable *lol*
Good intro ... but quickly went downhill after that. The problem with the sequel was they were pressured to tone down the violence and gore and make it more corny and parent friendly. Also by this time Richard Fleischer had long since ceased being a good director.
I always liked The destroyer better than The Barbarian. The characters were better in my opinion. I loved the original too though, so no disrespect to anyone.

I don't know, it's still good, although Mako did kind of rush through the reading of this part of the script it seems. But it's hardly terrible as many of you suggest. As far as comparing to the original movie, it's scarcely wise to just slap it on the sequel for good measure. I like both movies for their tale.

Agreed Donald.. No surprise that this section of the intro 2:33 - 2:52 is actually lifted from the soundtrack to the first movie. This one is good, but the first one is EPIC!

What i loved 'bout BOTH Conan movies was one dude:Mako. That man's voice would make you get excited for a Yellow Pages reading.....
You know something epic and badass is about to happen when he says: " now let me tell you of the days of high adventure."especially with that tone of voice.

Most of this movie was 'ass'. They replaced Subotai with a caucasian fool, introduced a ridiculous spoiled American teen as a period princess and they showed Mako being roasted over a fire as if he was a spitroast, straight out of a shitty comic. And that's just what comes to mind.

I can accept a lot from Fantasy movie, suspend my disbelief for almost anything... but Wilt Chamberlain protecting the virginity of a pretty young woman is totally unbelievable *lol*
Good intro ... but quickly went downhill after that. The problem with the sequel was they were pressured to tone down the violence and gore and make it more corny and parent friendly. Also by this time Richard Fleischer had long since ceased being a good director.
Also the budget for this film was much smaller.
Agreed, it's a great intro. The slo-mo frontal shot of Queen Taramis is brilliant.

I always liked The destroyer better than The Barbarian. The characters were better in my opinion. I loved the original too though, so no disrespect to anyone.

Ehy guys, I just checked on my original VHS of Conan the destroyer, I don't see the man in the left corner because the picture is cropped more toward the center. actually the whole movie looks like cropped. Maybe it's because of my old little TV?
