I remember playing this soundtrack for a friend in my dorm room in college and he walked out. Needless to say we are no longer friends. Anyone who has no appreciation of this is a loser.
I just love how everyone here is clearly having a great time doing this. From the chorus, to the orchestra, to especially the conductor, they're just having FUN! That's what music should be about.
@@fimucite very kind but I am truly humbled by the performance of the conductor. Wish I had been there and looking at the audience reaction it is plain to see that something very special had happened. Merry Christmas. Hooch
@Heather Murray No one who has played in an orchestra will ever say that lol. No performer is looking at a composer 100 percent of the time, but they will always pay attention to his movements with the side of their eyes. A great orchestra is unified by what the composer perceives as the right amount of dynamics for each section
That was one of the longest and most well-deserved standing ovations I’ve ever seen. When you see such a passionate conductor, it appears as if they are playing their own body like an instrument. You can have the most incredible musicians in an orchestra, but without a competent and artistic conductor, it can easily fall apart, or just plain suck. Amazing.
Its all abou the flow, the conducter already set the pace, it just needs to flow again and as soon as he GO sets it in motion... It would of course be bizar to have orchestras working with a GO and no conducter, would be surreal. Or maybe a robot would do it heheh. :D COOL!!

"religious experience" is pretty much the only way I can express just how emotional seeing this got to me. I literally had tears coming out of my eyes. If you have to ask, you cannot possibly understand.
The riddle of the steel, explained: The villain, Thulsa Doom, asks the captured Conan, "What is the riddle of steel?" Doom answers this question by explaining to Conan that the true strength of steel is in the hand that wields it - in other words, it is the resolve and commitment we bring to a task, not the quality or quantity of tools we use in performing it, that is the most important factor in determining success.
What does not kill you makes you stronger. The epitome of this movie is so much deeper than I feel it is given credit for. Part 2 was to plainly make money. But this film is extremely thought provoking. A lot to apply to one's life.
Furthermore, after said villain sends Conan to be crucified upon The Tree of Woe, a desolate, lone standing skeleton of its former self, to ponder not only his transgressions for daring to enter Doom’s Mountain of Power with dgive way on dispatching the snake cult leader, but also the Riddle of Steel, ie what strength does steel have compared to the hand that wields it. “Flesh and blood is stronger”, the agent of Set proclaims. Condemnation to the Tree of Woe is a fate few, if any, could survive, and this proves true even for a man of much constitution such as Conan. Despite having been found and recused by his friend, the thief/archer Subotai, and returned to his lady love, Valeria, Conan succumbs to his injuries. It is after his resurrection by the Wizard Akiro (paid for by Valeria, with her life, it turns out) that we see a redux to the Riddle of Steel. In the deep, emotionally touching “Recovery” scene and score track, Conan is seen alone in the arid, oceanside encampment practicing a kata with his Atlantean Sword and becoming reacquainted with his own body after having been sent to the Great Beyond on Crom’s Mount only to be returned to the material plane once again. As he adeptly wields his signature weapon, appearing to have not lost a step, we see the power give way to a more pensive Conan. As the scene draws to an end, Conan lifts his own hand in favor over his cold steel weapon, and gazes upon it, no doubt conflicted and confused about what his father had taught him about steel (you can trust it above all else, and can trust only it in this world) and what his arch enemy had said about the Riddle of Steel just before he consigned Conan to his death, i.e. “what is steel compared to THE HAND that wields it”. As the scene fades, Conan gazes upon his hand, clenching it into a fist, leading us to believe that perhaps the Riddle of Steel was once again lost on the battlefield.... What, then, is the Riddle of Steel? How is steel both strong, and not strong at all? How are flesh and blood, both easily rendered asunder by a honed blade, stronger than steel? It is, of course, as the OP John Leriel said, because the strength of steel lies first in its physical qualities, but that those qualities pale and fade away in comparison to the commitment of the person wielding it. A poorly prepared, poorly motivated person wielding a sword is no comparison to one of bold resolve, to one driven of dedication to task and purpose. The natural question arises, was Conan’s father wrong in what he taught young Conan in the beginning of the film? Did he mislead Conan in the truth about steel, a lesson that only Thulsa Doom could correctly teach later in the film? Let me know what you think with a reply.... until then: Have a look at and listen to The Recovery, and enjoy: th-cam.com/video/CfwXP7qj0E8/w-d-xo.html

Obviously this is one of the best soundtracks ever created. This orchestra create amazing renditions of that soundtrack. I believe props must go to the conductor who absolutely LIVES EVERY SINGLE NOTE with every fibre of his being. These elements combined make this the best performance of the Conan The Barbarian Soundtrack this side of the official album itself. INCREDIBLE.
Never even bothered to watch it. If something is a classic and I know a remake isn’t going to up to par I will not watch it and sully the memory of the original.
There was a remake? Oh yes, there was. See, I didn't remember it at all until I read your comment just now. Since it's forgettable, here's to never ever remembering that abominable abortion of a film again.
Fantastic. I like how before the piece begins the conductor punches to give character to the performance: heroic and energic. The opening motif and the subsequent crescendo of the music are very beautiful, with the explosion of the chorus but also the ending, with that sense of uncertainty... I think this music describes very well the feeling that dwells in our heroes who meet theirs fate of life and death and their emotions. There is courage but also fear of the unknown and when this adventure is over then there will be another.
The 1982 Conan, the Barbarian movie is one of those few movies were the soundtrack is not made for the movie but the movie accompanies this absolutely amazing masterpiece from Basil Poledouris as the music is this composition is THE centerpiece of the movie, not the film itself.
Not quite. It is true this music can stand on its own and the film less so. That's true of most films and the reason silent movies are over. But those who have ever watched Conan the Barbarian cannot hear this music without the visuals of the movie dancing in their heads. The movie and the music are worthy of each other.
Great execution. The best live one ive heard! This is one of the best soundtracks in the history of cinema. But it will never be recognised as such because it was composed for ''Conan the Barbarian'' a film that critics love to snob. If you mute the dialogue and just watch the movie with the soundtrack on, it can perfectly narrate the story and convey every feeling on screen. Thats how a sountrack is supposed to work. Not as generic music carpet.
How many movies with outstanding soundtracks get panned by film snobs because it has the appeal of the masses? Too many. If you pitched this idea to them without mentioning the source material. They would eat it up. A young boy living in a wilderness with his tribe and loving family. Has his whole world destroyed by a war band that butcher his entire tribe. His father is torn to pieces by war hounds. His mother making a valiant last stand to protect him. Is frozen in fear by the Sorcerer leading the war band. She is then decapitated by her husband's own sword! The boy and the other surviving children are sold into slavery...... You get the idea. High fantasy and Westerns with awesome soundtracks will always get panned.
You don't even need to mute the dialogue, as there in fact isn't very much of it when you consider the length of the film. The truth is this soundtrack carries the film in many places, thers's no way it would have worked without it.
I had no idea the choral progression I had stuck in my head for decades, attempting to find it reflected in other soundtracks and orchestral music with no luck, came from this soundtrack... It feels like finding a long lost but dear toy.

We who found it are just men. Not gods. Not giants. Just men. The secret of steel has always carried with it a mystery. You must learn its riddle, Conan. You must learn its discipline. For no one - no one in this world can you trust. Not men, not women, not beasts.
- This you can trust."

Conan did beginnings as "pulp fiction" novels and comics books, so it is expected to not be too serious of story. Was very popular world wide., but I agree with you that Conan has not been enjoyed as much as it should.

It was a decade of progressive values into looking culture .

Yep, thinking the same thing. They just nailed it.
Perfect
I also owned the soundtrack back in '82, and this indeed *is* note for note. Basil Poledouris, genius. Arguably the best film score ever.
Saw the film and had the soundtrack album way back then. Glad to hear it in stereo at last!
This conductor and these musicians are total pros. They do renditions of other movie soundtracks that sounds even better than the originals.
I love how the chonductor ends up breathless, sweaty and the hair messed up, this piece is made of pure power and intensity.

The energy and passion of the conductor was truly remarkable. He certainly seems to have pulled a stunning performance from the orchestra.

:D COOL!!
The conductor's living his best life in this moment.
The Conductor is *exuberantly* involved.

The riddle of the steel, explained:
The villain, Thulsa Doom, asks the captured Conan, "What is the riddle of steel?" Doom answers this question by explaining to Conan that the true strength of steel is in the hand that wields it - in other words, it is the resolve and commitment we bring to a task, not the quality or quantity of tools we use in performing it, that is the most important factor in determining success.
What does not kill you makes you stronger. The epitome of this movie is so much deeper than I feel it is given credit for. Part 2 was to plainly make money. But this film is extremely thought provoking. A lot to apply to one's life.
This comment is 100% spot on.
What value is the "rewards" in life without the hands that forged them
The best part is when he breaks his father's sword and proves it.
It is the strength of will that is at the heart of the riddle of steel
Let me know what you think with a reply.... until then:

One of the best soundtracks ever recorded. Period.

Not as generic music carpet.
joe k exactly
My favorite movie and soundtrack since the movie came out.
Absolutely, this is the music of legends! You cannot hear this and not feel adrenaline, unless you have no idea what is best in life ;)
You don't even need to mute the dialogue, as there in fact isn't very much of it when you consider the length of the film. The truth is this soundtrack carries the film in many places, thers's no way it would have worked without it.
