In today's video we will be replacing the bearings, races and seals on a boat trailer. We will show step by step how to remove the hub, how to pack the new bearings, how to remove and install the new races and seal and reassemble the hub back on to the spindle. This process will work for boat trailers, utility trailers and travel trailers. We also will be showing how to check and fill the trailer buddy bearing saver system. Trailer Buddy is basically the same thing as the Bearing Buddy.

This is THE BEST video explaining and showing how to change trailer wheel bearings. Nobody else talks about how to remove the inner bearing by pulling on the whole hub: ingenious! Also, you don't use fancy presses to get the races in and out: just simple tools and a work bench, like most of us have access to. I used a flat piece of wood to tap the sealer ring in, rather than the specialized tool you used. Thank you for a super teaching video.

Like father , like son , you two together made an awesome step by step video on the complete take down and rebuild of bearing/racer and seals replacement. There is no video too long when you are learning how to do something. The problems that arouse during the video was golden , because we the viewers would need to see what to do next under those circumstances. You, your dad and Jesus will be along side me as I tackle my hub bearing replacement project, ( the 3 wise men ) Thanks bro!

Good video. HINTS Place race in freezer then use a block of wood on outside edge of race to hammer till the race is even with top of hub ( race goes in easier). Now use a socket that is just a little smaller than the hub opening yet makes contact with the race all around. Pound on the socket to seat the race in the hub.

You can also use the old race. Cut a slice out of the old race with a grinder and pound it in with a block of wood. The slit in the old race ensures it will come back out easily.

You made very nice video and I love that you got your dad to share his years of old school knowledge, like hand packing the bearings and how to preload and set the tension. I remember most of his tricks when I was young gal working on old drum brakes. I think these days it is important to use a seal, bearing and race installer tool instead of a steel punch as the punch will deform the metal. I remember using a socket or sometimes the old bearing, but so easy now to go to local auto parts store and get the free or cheap rental on the proper install tool to avoid damage to new parts. It is easy to misalign and ruin the seal, ask me how I know. I think it is always good to plan to check the tension on the bearings and to tighten up the manual adjusting brakes after a short distance as they will likely be loose after seating in from road travel.

The last person that owned my boat trailer apparently didn't Grease the bearings before driving 60 miles to deliver it to me, the outer hub on one of the wheels was so ground out from a failed bearing, that the new bearing race wouldn't touch the walls inside the hub. I had to grind the teeth off of an Old fashioned holesaw, and cut it to make a sleeve for the outer bearing race (the one next to the castle nut) to fit tightly. It worked great!

To me I saw too things. 1) Using a thin layer red hi-temp sealant on bearing seals. When done correctly, leave a nice red ring when excess wiped away after hammering in. 2) putting grease in the bearing buddies til maxed out. I have seen that cause more issues on boat applications than not. Pumping grease in until the blue indicator pushes out maybe half way to max is fine and prevents excessing pressure on seals when the hub heats up from travel. Otherwise, awesome video!!

Great video! Question: If the bearings(rollers) aren't seated properly after taking out are those completely damaged?

Great video. So it's not necessary to fill the whole area between bearings with grease?

When taking out the back bearing seal you can take a 1/2 socket and hit it with hammer to get it out theback

So do the seals have to against the bearings? Will the cap push the outer seal in to where it has to be? Or should it be set first?

Great video. However I have a trailer hub that has no indents to put a punch to knock the races out. There is literally no place for the punch to grab onto the race. Do you have any suggestions on how to get these races out? It’s on a Karavan SeaDoo jetski trailer. Thank you.

This is great and has an old school feel but in my experience you should we use a rubber hammer and deadblow on some parts or wood block

Good video, really enjoyed it and great it showed the step many miss out, replacing the outer races. Only thing I'd say, my dad always taught me not to use a carpenters hammer for auto work.

Great detailed info. Was looking for info so I can check my kayak trailer. Is there any such thing as a waterproof bearing housing so I can back my trailer into the water? I bought it used and have been careful not to put the tires into the water.
    Thank you

To be honest I'm not sure. These were the hubs that came with my boat trailer, but there is not really any difference that I could see that would make them different from any other trailer hub, except that these had the trailer buddy system, which can be added to any hub with the same diameter. My hunch is that as log as you have the bearings packed and use a marine grade grease you probably would be ok... but that's just my opinion, you may want to search around to see what other thoughts are out there on the subject. Sorry I could not be more help.

I've been using O'Reilly Super Lithium EP Moly Grease to pack my camper trailer hubs with a bearing buddy and the bearings appear to be OK (no wiggle room or noise when spinning the wheel). I've been using that grease for about 4 years based on someone's recommendation. It looks like I should have been using their High Temp Wheel Bearing Grease. Should I just continue using the Super Lithium or switch? If I switch can I just, can I just mix these greases or do I have to pull the hubs and replace everything? Thanks for the great video?

Here is what the American Society for Testing and Materials says: "Specifications for two category groups: chassis lubricants ("L" prefix) and wheel-bearing lubricants ("G" prefix). Performance classifications within these groups result in two designations for chassis greases (LA and LB) and three designations for wheel bearing greases (GA, GB and GC). The automotive industry is in general agreement that the highest performance category, to date, in each group (LB and GC) is suitable for service relubrication." With that being said, from what I saw online, Super Lithium EP Moly Grease is service rated as LB. But you would need to check on the specific tube of grease that you have. LB and GC greases sound like they are different so I don't know if it would be a good idea to mix them. Personally I would go with the wheel bearing rated grease only. But by all means, do what you are comfortable with for your situation. Might not be a bad idea to do a little research to figure out exactly what the tube of grease you have is rated for.

When you pump in the greases, make sure that the greases inside the hub and the greases from grease gun match. There are too many grease types and they may not compatible,
