I'm a 181 cm Dutch woman and I went to Paris, a few years back. They have The Catacombs, where I scraped my head across the (wet and gritty) ceiling, when we were +/- 30 meters down. For anyone that doesn't know, they have loads of skulls there and bones, it's a mass-grave basically, but decorative. As soon as we were on a normal level (the level of the living) again, we had to walk through a part with dried-up (mummified) monks. Which was quite creepy. We walked past and I wanted to be quick (I wanted to go outside, I'd seen enough) so I walked fast and something scraped across the top of my head. As I looked around to see what I'd hit (and ofcourse, to apologize to the tourguide) I saw a very old lamp, that had hung quite low and it was made of human (ancient) bones. The finger-bones were hanging downwards and one of them had scraped across my head.

I am 189 cm ( 6,2 ft ) and consider myself average tall as a Dutchman. Lots of people around here are 6.4 ft of even bigger. It has nothing to do with the kind of food, but it's all because of natural selection of the Dutch over de centuries.
That is nonsense because all people get children, not just the tall ones, so it is not natural selection. That leaves the fact that Dutch drink more milk and consume more milk products then others. Similar to the Masai people of Kenia, they live on mostly cow milk and are way taller then others. Milk of course has a lot of growth hormone because it is ment for baby cows. So that makes sense. Not this "natural selection" thing. On average taller people live shorter lives and have more ailments, like back problems. Probably a good idea to go vegan. Meat and milk are harmful to the body and the environment whatever the respective lobyists are trying to sell you.
@@DutchmanAmsterdam According to the experts it all has to do with the fact that tall Dutch choose also a tall partner, so their children are also giants. Doctors are telling us that food is no issue because we eat the same food as for example the polish of Britisch people, and they are smaller.

@@iemand2612 I'm sorry, but it takes some serious air pollution before it robs people being able to grow tall sufficiently to not allow them to. Similarly does it not magically make people taller, even when the cleanest air is provided, if their genes and hormones are not designated to do so. It really is hormones and genes that are the window, within the opportunity by food, water, air etc. only play a minor role to how tall a person will grow. Or in other words, it requires serious starvation, or massive oxygen deprivation to not allow someone to grow as tall as their genes and hormones would designate them to. It is just how it works. And yes, you can ingest hormonal material that can highly influence this. Like when you eat chicken meat you will ingest huge amounts of oestrogen, and many men will hereby suffer from poor beard growth, delayed puberty, less penile length and grow breasts, and no, I didn't make this up, this is recent research that showed this. And the dairy, Dutch dairy comes from farms that constantly keeps the mother cows pregnant, which is totally different from animals in most other cultures like in India. Dutch dairy contains a LOT more hormones due to that. And the Dutch are the greatest consumers of cheese in the world, with a whopping 17 kilograms of cheese per year on average. Do you have any idea how many litres of fluid milk this equates to? Almost 200 of litres of milk, sometimes even more, depending on how old the cheese is .... Decades ago I read in a newspaper the only significant factor that causes the Dutch on average being taller than people of other countries is the higher concentration of magnesium in the tap water in the Netherlands.
Let's swap this around, when you are deficient in magnesium, sure you might not grow as tall as you would have. When you are not deficient though, more magnesium will not magically make humans grow taller. What makes you taller is genetics and hormones. The Dutch have a high dairy intake, with lots of rather concentrated dairy products. Dairy contains natural hormones (IGF-1)that makes calfs grow, but also other species if they decide to consume it. Also, we like to eat a lot of plastic packaged foods, and I mean acidous, moist and fatty foods, with plastic touching it all day on a very large surface. Like chicken filets. But also tomato puree in tin cans with plastic coatings. These hormonal disrupting chemicals that leak from this type of packaging is responsible for a lot of women to turn fertile increasingly young, and male to actually grow fertile at a higher age. When you turn fertile your body will not grow much any more. See the correlation? It is a combination of things, and magnesium can be a contributing factor, as growth of bones will require magnesium, but it is not the cause.
@@sabinesteil4690 It is only recently revealing due to hormonal effects, which increases the differences that are based in the genetics. The rivers may have been crossed during peace times, but were also highly highly used strategically, for instance during the 80 year war with the Spanish. The southern part, under the rivers will have a lot more genetics stemming from the south of Europe, and these people are smaller, whereas the top, northern part will have more 'viking' / 'germanic' blood. So that basis has always been there and modern circumstances regarding food have only amplified what was already there.
True enough, genetic research shows that partner choice (tall people mate with other tall people) is a descisive factor why dutch people are (on average) very tall.

What you are referring to is sexual selection in the human species and I don't think there is a difference between Dutch sexual selection and sexual selection between people of other nationalities or if you want cultures. Yeah I'm 188 cm and felt "normal tall" in the Netherlands, rarely did I meet people towering over me and occasionally got comments on my height, but I didn't tower over everyone either. Either people are completely clueless about their height (studies show most men overestimate their height by about 5 cm) and don't know how to tell people's heights, or the Dutch like to exaggerate the tallness thing as part of their national image. But there's some hilariously exaggerated claims online.
As a dutch 1.86 meter man, I am quit average. Not small and not tall. The world is not made for tall persons. Beds are for example 2 meters and if you stretch (like standing on your toes. Then a 2 meter bed is too small for people taller than 1.90, especially since your pillow also takes up space and you usually don't sleep with your head against the edge of the bed. In that context I am glad I am a Dutch dwarf that can sleep in any bed ;) In an airplane I am already cramped with my average height, idem in many cars in the back. With clothes I'm fine, but also here. People over 1.90 often have trouble finding clothes abroad. I have pants size 34 lenght and people who are a length larger, 36 or 38, have difficulty in many countries to find a suitable pants. For example, I live in Switzerland at the moment and here in many clothing stores my size is about maximum. And less then 5% of the man I see on the streets here are equal or taller then I am. Totally different in the Netherlands where I and my 1.75 wife are nicely average and can find without any problem nice clothings.

In France where I live the average height for women is 1m65 (young women is 1m68 ), 1m76 for men (young men is 1m78). So in France Daantje would be in the average height, not short. In 1900 Dutch and French were the same average height. Dutch grew more because of their very high consumption of milk, mostly. I doubt this trend will continue. For many reasons.
it was not because of milk, though there is a correlation. milk doesn't make people grow taller. better nutrition does though, and dairy is calorie dense. dutch nutrition improved massively from 1800 to the mid 1900s, hence the growth
French and Dutch were the same height in 1900. Considering that nutrition improved all over Western Europe and Dutch have become way taller than other Western Europeans, how do you explain the difference today?
No, they did not. The Dutch outgrew the French for a different reason: the much later industrialisation of the Netherlands meant that child mortality rates remained higher for much longer, so dysgenics kicked in later. It has always been the dumb and the genetically unfit who tended to have the highest number of children and thanks to high child mortality this excess offspring of theirs died off, after all, physical health including a good immune system strongly correlates with mental health (because the brain is 85% of the genome so a massive target for mutations which also cause physical anomalies and poor health) while the fewer but healthier children of the genetically fit and intelligent had a much better chance at survival. Industrialisation drove down child mortality rates to the point where the dumb and the sick aren't just outbreeding the rest, but their offspring almost always makes it to adulthood and there's a degeneration of the gene pool. Length and physical fitness correlate with intelligence so what we are seeing is an artefact of the later onset of lowering child mortality.
In today's world you cannot tell which nation most of their genetic inheritance comes from anymore. That sometimes leads to a lot of misinterpretations of medical lab results in people who are under the age of 30.
It's not milk. It's selective breeding. Tall men have an evolutionary advantage because almost all women want to date men over 6 foot. Additionally in the Netherlands, tall men don't want to date short women, unlike in other countries, so the short genes are being phased out.
Makes no sense. Maybe the tallest nation in the world? But not people. What about the Sudanese. Have you ever been acquainted with a group of Sudanese people?
To Dutch people here in comment section. What is the average height of 14years old boy there? I'm 14 and have a height of 5'3-5'4 or 161cm I'm from Philippines anyway if you ask
Man that question is really hard to answer because I know some folk who have been 1.90 since they were 14 but me personally have been around 1.70 till I was 17 when I started growing a lot more due to proper nutrition and fixing my sleep patterns (while still being in my growth phase) and I am now 1.85. Since 14 is in the middle of puberty a 14 year old boy can be either 1.60 or 1.90 so giving an average would not mean anything.

They meant the average Dutch person, as men being 1.83 mt average and women being a bit over 1.68 mt average makes them collide in 175,62 mark, obviously the translated wrong 175,62 cm which should be more 5´9 than 5´7 but I already noticed many Europeans suck when converting centimeters/meters to feet inch system... because they translate X meters to X feet... but they fail to realize there are 12 inches in a feet, so you cannot do for example 1.7562 mt to feet = 5.7618 feet and assume those 5.761811 feet mean 5 feet 7,61811 inches because the inches cannot be converted directly from feet, you should rather just take aside the 5 feet number for later and work transforming 0,761811 feet to inches , all you need to do is multiply those 0,761811 x 12 and you will immediately have how many inches are there in the decimal feet = you have a result of 9,1416. Which means average Dutch person(men and women combined) are 5´9,1416 inches which would translate to 5´9 1/7 inches. Probably Registered more as 5´9 1/4 inches, as the American system usually rounds up or down from 1/4 - 1/2 - 3/4 etc for listing, and 5´9 1/7 is still closer to 5´9 1/4 than to 5´9 flat
I am pretty certain that The Dutch do not deserve to call themselves the world's tallest nation. Here are the reasons why. 1) If they are so tall, they would have topped the average height chart in every sporting events they have played in..They have never achieved this feat even once. 2) Demography. More than 13% of Dutch are non-European descend. Even with super high and very equal living standards, the non-White youngsters will still be alot shorter than their White/European peers due to genetics.. I am pretty sure The Dutch doctored their average height data. Now let's look at the competition. In almost every sporting even since year 2000, Team Serbia is always the tallest. Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Crna Gora has less than 5% non-White minority, with most of them being Romany Gypsies. This means, smaller height difference between ethnic and sub-ethnic groups.
1. abject nonsense: professional athletes are outliers, no matter their ethnicity. A nation with lower average length but higher variation will have taller athletes than a taller nation with less variation. 2. again, abject nonsense: they might be Dutch citizens but aren't part of the Dutch people. Ethnicity =/= nationality and the Dutch also happen to be an ethnic group - after whom a country was named hence the name is also referring to citizenship. The opposite can also be true, someone of full Dutch ancestry doesn't have to be a Dutch citizen. There are full blooded Dutch people who hold only Australian or Canadian citizenship so they are only Dutch in one sense of the word. The reason that Serbia has the tallest sports team is because a population subgroup in the wider region, the natives of the Dinaric Alps, are very tall. That doesn't mean that their population average is also the highest. The populations living in the lowland areas are much shorter. Same with the Chinese and their IQ: Chinese have one of the highest average IQs in the world but they have relatively few outliers. Spaniards might have a 10 point IQ disadvantage over them but produce far more outliers (retards and geniuses). Your logic's stupidity can be illustrated by deducting that the Chinese cannot have higher average IQs because, despite massive differences in population size, they won far fewer Nobel prizes than Spaniards (which by the way is true - and the difference is colossal even without taking into account population size). You cannot extrapolate the outliers of a group to an average!

Then I'm told the Dutch are super tall, yet whoever says this is referring only to the white Dutch. How can anyone say the Dutch are so tall without being racist? It's literally saying Dutch non-whites are not Dutch
You can get a Dutch passport but you cannot change your ethnicity to Dutch as a non-Dutch. The Dutch are not just a nationality but an ethnic group and we are a West Frankish Germanic people with significant amounts of German and Scandinavian admixture. By the way, it's about time we stopped bitching about 'racism': ethnocentrism is just a normal and universal human instinct and should not be hurled as an accusation at people. It is just as natural to feel more connection with one's own ethnicity, than to feel more connection with one's own family.

Like when you eat chicken meat you will ingest huge amounts of oestrogen, and many men will hereby suffer from poor beard growth, delayed puberty, less penile length and grow breasts, and no, I didn't make this up, this is recent research that showed this. A few years back I read a study that explained how/why the Dutch, on average, became so tall in the last 200 years.
Apparently taller women had/have a higher fertility rate than their shorter counterparts. Over time, that difference in fertility led to a larger proportion of taller people in the population.

How common you can see a native Dutch teen who reachs 2 meters or taller in your city? 1 in 20? 1 in 30? 1 in 50?

@@cyberprimate genetics
@@pdfbanana Yes possibly.
