Why are the Dutch so tall? BBC News

  • The Dutch are, on average, the world's tallest people, but it hasn't always been that way.
    So what happened? Scientists believe a number of factors are responsible, such as genetics, better diet and medical care.
    But now there's another theory. Research from the London School of Tropical Medicine suggests that natural selection may also have something to do with it.
    Jane O'Brien went to the Netherlands to find out more.

      The only people in the netherlands that are of the same height as them are africans and dutch caribeans ( males)

    • @luichen115
      @luichen115 6 ปีที่แล้ว +124

      @ Fixthings247, i said african as in african nationals not african as in african that is to vague africans are all different from each other. How can you say ''Africans are short, they average at 5'6'' africans are not one country like holland. I am talking about the people living in holland who are tall besides the dutch themself and from all the foreigners here the Dutch of african backgrounds aswell the ones from the Dutch Carribean are the same height avarage or taller. And africans as a whole are known for being tall every country you go to you will find alot of tall africans on avarge even the shorter ones are more like 175 which is average height. I can say asians as whole are short to avarage height. While Africans and Europeans are above avarge height to very tall.

      Lui Chen Diet differences have a major part to play.

    • @luichen115
      @luichen115 6 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      @ Fixthings247yes of course there are countries in africa where people are shorter just like european countries like italy, greece, spain, portugal,malta etc people there on avarge are not so tall especially in Italy. Malawi, Zambia are short in general. But people from countries like Senegal, South Sudan, Rwanda ( as you mentioned), Somalia, Ivorycoast, Ghana, Ethiopia are generally tall people. The kids born here in Holland are even taller as you said even better nutrition. True nutrition plays a role but africans in general are tall. If you go to the usa, cuba, colombia, brazil all the africans decendants of slaves are on avarage the taller then most groups. Same can be said of europeans. If you look at asians decandants in Jamaica, Guayana, usa, canada, hawaii etc on average most have been short for centuries. The dutch as are tall as a nation by avarage but not as a ethncity. The dinka are taller on avarge but there group is spread among multiple nations so its hard to get clear statistics. For example the dutch on avarge are taller then afrikaners of SA and both are ethicaly dutch. So it true nutrition plays a role. Holland is very wealthy and have a good nutriotion system.

    • @luichen115
      @luichen115 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @Fixthings247 Wel i disagree on some parts. 1. Wikipedia is not really a reliable source as they reference old information in many cases and somtimes inaccurate in sources ( in othr words wiki is not all that reliable in infromation). So height online of countries might differ in reality. And height measurement is not frequently measured on a yearly basis to have a objective and consistent reference. In the case of many african countries is complexity as multiple african nations have somewhat 30+ different ethnic groups living in one state. For example if you take the Hausas of Nothern Nigeria they on avarage are very tall people but are also found in neighbouring states so again its hard to have statistics based on one single ethnic group. The netherlands is full of ethnic dutch so its easy to measure the height of one single ethnic group who are the dominant in one country. Southern Europeans would have a better ''diet'' so to say then most african nations due to poverty but majority are still short as in comparison to the dutch. Even in Italy there are sizalble Senegalese, Ivorian, Ghanian communities ( not talking about refugees) who who tower 2wice over Italians. Just look at Mario Balotelli, Ogbanna both one of tallest players in the italy national team. I am not saying because they of african heritage they are tall. But because they belong to ethnic groups who are very tall in country of orgin but where there are not statistics about based on their single ethnicties. Yes its true that south asian countries likeThailand, Philippines are short but not comparable to africans in general who are much talller.
      I disagree with them being tiny .....far from it. I lived in France and Holland and france there are many french speaking african communities and many just tower over everyone 6ft-6t 5 ( not all of course) but on averga they belong to the tallest groups in France. Even the french are avarge height in general. Its not just selective breeding with black americans in slavery. But also pure genetics many slaves come from areas where people are on avarge above normal height to tall ( Senegal, Ivory Coast, Guinea, Gambai etc). I dont know what you mean by '' white diet and white influence''. Is diet all of a sudden tied to race and how did white influance make a ethnic group in america taller ? For the rest agree with you in genral. Nutrion is key and the weathier the country the better the nutrition can be. But genetics do play a role.

    My friend had a Dutch stepfather. He stood 6’3. He had about six brother’s. No sisters. They ranged from the shortest one at 6’ to the tallest at 6’8”. Plus to further the questions of Dutch height these men were born in the 1930s to the early 1940’s. So, this isn’t like a modern day phenomenon. Additionally, the shortest of the bunch had the same condition of Queen Elizabeth. His entire life he got by on about half the amount of sleep most people need. Diet and environment certainly have some effect on this. Not as much as many people think it is. I’m a firm believer height is in your genes. It’s determined at conception from the mix of genes you inherit from your parents. Plus, I think it’s all pretty obvious. I work with different ethnic back grounds from around the world. Of course in some cases if a person doesn’t have any features that are easily identifiable things aren’t so obvious. I’m a Heinz 57. My blue eyes are about the only clue you will have. That and I’m a 5’9” white man with brown hair. It’s very clear to see the consistent height of identifiable ethnic groups I work with.

The father was so much taller than me that it was hard to even guess his height. Maybe 7'0" or more! His wife and I were eye to eye so I assume she was 6'5'ish. Dutch children are the most happy children according Unicef.Children can only grow during their sleep. Happy children are sleeping better and on top of that Dutch parents have fixed times for everything so also for bedtime according their age, so they also sleep long. Just means in general that all children from a certain age all go to bed at the same time. This fixed time thing means also that people only eat unhealthy once a week and the rest of the week they cook at home. Actually Dutch people are brainwashed to live according the 3 R' s in the matter of raising children of Rust (Calmness) Reinheid ( Cleanliness) and Regelmaat ( Regularity) When a child is yawning in the classroom the teacher will say strict to the child that he or she didn't sleep enough and lack on sleep is giving less good results at school. On top of that the most of the children have at least one parent working parttime. So Dutch parents have a lot of positive conditions to look after the well being of their children. Also it is common in the Netherlands to let your children to play outside a lot. So the children are hungry from playing and eating a lot. More eating means also getting more important nutricients to grow well. Strange that they are not concidering those things in their research.

American men use to average about 5'10" a couple of decades ago but look about 5'8" on overall average height for men with the white and black populations shrinking to about 5'9" in male height. Some will say this shrinking in overall average height is due to the latin American and Asian immigrants. This is true to some extent because most of these immigrants are shorter on average than white and black Americans but these 2nd and 3rd generation Latin Americans and Asian Americans look the same in average height as white and black Americans. But the biggest differences with Americans in the last couple of decades is that there were far less overweight and obese people. Today it is more common for a 5'8" man to be over 200 IBS than a 6'2" man in the 1970s to be over 200 IBS. I have an old high school football magazine when my brother was playing football in the late 1970s. Compared it to a recent high school football team from the same high school and looked at the statistics and found that the players in the late 1970s had more players over 6'0", especially over 6'2". But at the same time these players in the late 1970s had far fewer players over 200 IBS. Today being overweight is very common in the USA and the obesity problem is also growing rapidly. Americans on average exercise less and eat more junk food plus we consume these GMO foods. Not only that we eat too fast and inhale our foods instead of chewing are foods because in the USA we are always in a hurry. Decades ago we ate less junk food and didn't eat these GMO foods and were much more physically active as young kids, teenagers and young adults. The families use to eat together and take our time eating our foods and had conversations about what we did during the day. Today it is rare in the USA to get the family together for a meal and if we do we eat our meals very fast and have little to no conversations with each other and play with our smartphones instead of talking with each other about our day.

      ***** That isn't what she's saying. To clarify everyone has an upper limit on height built into their genome, and how close you get to that upper limit depends on environmental factors in your life like health and diet.
      Of course a primordeal dwarf's upper limit is way lower than most persons', but most people are not primordial dwarfs either so they don't really carry much statistical significance here

    • @blazednlovinit
      @blazednlovinit 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ***** Aye, i've heard there are multiple genes that control height, you could have two short parents and be way taller than both of them depending on which genes you get from who, i think there are certain genetic factors at play, sexual selection. Most of it is probably just because of increasingly good diet, medicine and lifestyle compared with a couple hundred years ago.

    I'm an American woman and my grandmother was born in Holland. She was "only" 5'9" tall. My dad, her son, was 6'2" and I'm a bit over 5'8" with relatively small feet for my height (for some reason). My mom (of English, Scottish, and French descent) was barely 5'4", so I know where I got my height. I grew up in West Michigan where many Dutch immigrants have settled. It was almost a given that many of them and their children were/are taller than the average non-Dutch American.

      ja precies, over het algemeen zeggen britten ''meter'' ipv feet of inches bij lengte, maar ligt ook weer aan het precieze dialect. bij afstanden is het wel altijd meter. Meestal als ze het imperialistische systeem gebruiken is het omdat het voor een programma is wat (ook) in amerika wordt uitgezonden en die amerikanen moet je niet in verwarring gaan brengen met moeilijke dingen zoals meters en centimeters anders worden ze boos en gaan ze iets anders kijken (was een grapje dat laatste maar ik weet zeker dat er zulke mensen tussen zitten)

    I think it has started since the late 19th century, when food, housing and hygienic conditions were improved. Dutch cities like Amsterdam had their cityslums, no clean drinking water, bad hygiene etc. Once those improvements in infra-structure where made, the cities where cleaned up, new houses were build with wc and sometimes even a shower, workers conditions were better,more variety in fruits&vegatables, milk and cheese, all in all life improved and people got stronger and healthier and so did the average growth of people in general. One can look it up. So in say 150 years the average lenght of people in the Netherlands grew, until the tallest and still one of the healthiest people on the planet!

Today, Americans aren't getting as much magnesium as they used to, just the dairy, but we need Magnesium as much as calcium for bone health. My theory is that throughout the years, the Dutch have been consuming more Magnesium and diary as a population than other counties.

    I think dairy is a big contributor to the hight. Countries where people are vegetarians tend to be smaller than people who consume dairy. I lived many different countries included in the Netherlands. I am originally from Somalia, so earlier Somali generations where very big because they were nomads who lived on dairy and meat; while my generation are smaller due to the new diet we consume. What is very common in the Netherlands is also physical activity such as cycling and swimming, so combination of physical activities and dairy is the reason I think.
