When I first heard about the blood eagle in the tv show ‘Vikings’, I didn’t think they would actually put it onscreen. Instead, it turned into the best scene in the show, and one of the best shot sequences I’ve ever seen in television.
Agreed I loved both of them
It was a great scene and definitely the Vikings were pretty brutal! However there is no proof that the blood eagle punishment actually happened, or at least this way!

This guy is great. His whole persona is all mellow and upbeat, and then he makes all these videos about torture. The contrast is entertaining.
The blood eagle would actually be a very rapid form of death. The ribs and the diaphragm is what helps expand the lungs. When the lungs are freed from the ribs and exposed, there's no way for the lungs to expand, and the person would likely suffocate, resulting in rapid unconsciousness, long before the eagle is completed. This means, by the time they're finishing up the procedure, even if they're quick about it, they'd be working on a corpse. It's, still, would be horrible to go through it, but once everything starts getting pulled out of you, you're probably, already bound for that great meadhall in the sky.

Blood eagles only happened in the Scandinavian areas and if you screamed you would go to helheim whereas if you didn't you were allowed into Valhalla. It was only for Vikings and that was a major punishment against a Jarl or the King in Scandinavia.
After playing AC Valhalla and watching Ivarr recklessly capture the king and then perform the blood eagle and now knowing it actually happened is super cool

As an MD, I think the blood eagle is often misrepresented, especially when shown as a prolonged death with the lungs still breathing (I.e. Midsommar, etc). Your lungs have no muscle and only inflate when your diaphragm pulls down in a closed thoracic cavity. Even a slight puncture and it doesn’t work (pneumothorax). So people would suffocate/bleed out within minutes. Plus, internal organs aren’t highly innervated, so once to the lung pulling stage *probably* not more pain.
totally. Severing that many ribs would dissect too many intercostal arteries and the victim would bleed to death within a few minutes. And yeah, once the thoracic cavity is breached, the negative pressure required for lung inflation becomes physically impossible and so the victim would suffocate. Brutal way to die, but not slow.

It’s actually extremely practical when you think about it in Norse terms. It’s a final battle for your soul. If you scream once during your execution you can never enter Valhalla. It’s not so much just killing you painfully, it’s keeping you alive long enough and in pain for long enough trying to get you to ruin your own afterlife. If you succeed, the amount of respect your legacy would always have would be amazing.

The Vikings would stay aware for as long as possible, without screaming or crying, so they could go to Valhalla and drink with Odin, Thor, Freja and the others. Vikings basically had to die a brutal death, with no screaming or crying. The Blood Eagle certainly was brutal enough to ensure a place in Valhalla, if they managed to overcome the suffering of the execution.

One thing that you forgot to mention, they used a very sharp knife to open up the skin from the tail bone to the rib cage, and then used an Axe to sever the rib cage from the spine.

After seeing like 10 of the worst punishments of mankind videos, it never ceases to amaze me how many different methods of torture people come up with to harm other people.

I've watched A LOT of videos and documentaries talking about horrible torture and execution methods, but this one is by far the worst (in my opinion). I can't even imagine the pain that people that were executed this way felt. Also it's shocking how someone came up with that method, it's just bizarre to me.
