    Just found my first bullet, a three ringer Confederate fired Minie ball a few days ago. I am in Minnesota in the Minneapolis area and never even considered finding one in my area. So it was an amazing find for me. Can't wait to get to some areas where they are more prevalent. Thanks for your great video!

      Now that is a rare one, a Minnesota 3 ringer, you may be one of two folks to be able to say you found one out there, lol. Congrats, and thanks!

    Very informative. Our Galaghers appear to be made if good lead and they are virtually intact as when dropped, but our Burnsides are terrible for the most part; the base and cavity literally rot away. I've always thought it was due to inferior lead. Good job buddy. Love the series.

    • @BirdDogg
      @BirdDogg  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Seven, yeah all the burnsides around here are toast, and some of the gallaghers are good, but most are toast here. Likely a combination of inferior lead, and the soil conditions.

    Amazing how many different types of bullets used during the civil war. No wonder there was a lot amputees.
    Great job with video

    • @BirdDogg
      @BirdDogg  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Dieter. It is really impressive to think of all of the innovations that were occurring during this time in firearms. There were hundreds of types of rifles and pistols being used and many of them required special ammo. Unfortunately, war is the greatest purveyor of invention.

      But don't overlook that there were great strides forward in medicine at the same time.

    • @hoopenshinermom4758
      @hoopenshinermom4758 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      BirdDogg Sadly, most of our medical knowledge came from the battlefields as well, From Florence Nightingale and nursing theory, to the sick and inhuman experiments performed by the nazis of WW2. Our knowledge of anatomy and physiology, and micro- biology would not have progressed as rapidly.

    That is awesome, i would say without a doubt those two bullets hit, it happened a lot throughout the war, it was so common at Gettysburg that after the battle was over they found maybe bullets that had hit another bullet mid air

    Great lesson on the bullets. I learned something for sure. I have what I think is a bullet that was made into a fishing weight but I'm not 100% sure. Solid base, 3 ringer but it looks like someone put it into a vice and cut a slit in it. I can shoot you a pic if you want. The red back drop and shades works well for you. :-)

    • @BirdDogg
      @BirdDogg  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Mental! Congrats, you have indeed found a sinker bullet! I love em, much better use for a bullet than shooting it at someone, lol.

    Those two bullets look like they hit each other but, I wouldn't think they would land that close to each other and would fly in opposite directions after they hit. Thanks for showing your bullets and the tip on the book.

    • @charleswillsonpeale5739
      @charleswillsonpeale5739 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's possible they did. I've seen it before. It could happen at target practice. Perhaps a couple of guys were shooting at a tree stump. (or one guy) Now the stump has totally rotted away leaving the bullets.

    • @BirdDogg
      @BirdDogg  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There were actually some bullets that hit mid air and fused together. I am leaning heavily towards these two having hit in mid air. It appears to me that they collided nose to nose. Hard to say though without a forensics guy though.

    • @BirdDogg
      @BirdDogg  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      To me these look like they met nose to nose, but I could be wrong.

    Very cool and informative "Dogg Log". It sure looks like those 2 bullets mate up; whether it was in mid-air or in the same target is the big question. Is one definitively a Yankee bullet and the other a Confederate? Are they facing each other or is one stacking on top of the other? If it was in a target the target doesn't appear to be very hard or I would think they would have deformed more like the high impact one you showed. I'm not a forensic expert, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express before. ; )

    • @BirdDogg
      @BirdDogg  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ahhh the holiday inn express, lol... TO me it appears the bullets met nose to nose in mid air. One appears to be a standard 3 ring, the other is either a tower or an enfield bullet.

    • @tylerbuchholz3234
      @tylerbuchholz3234 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well then, since the CSI, NCIS, NYPD Blue Hollywood crime lab is backed up until next season's finale; we'll just have to conclude those bullets met in mid air after being fired from opposite sides. hehe.....stay tuned for the next episode of Deputy Dogg when he takes on "Big Iron in the River" (really looking forward to that one, got the VCR all set) lol...; )

    Another interesting video, thanks. I notice you don't do much cleaning on the bullets, is there a reason behind it?

    • @BirdDogg
      @BirdDogg  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Jerry! I guess my biggest relic hunting sin is not cleaning my relics more. There are a couple of reasons I reckon. First off, I hunt a lot and finds pile up very fast, as a result, the time it would require to properly clean them all would be prohibitive to me being out hunting for more. Secondly, the value of all of my finds is that initial moment of discovery, and the memories associated with finding it. The piece itself holds little value to me after the discovery, it just sits on a shelf, and finally, I figure I will clean them all when I am too old to hunt everyday, it will be like a whole new relic hunt!!

    • @BirdDogg
      @BirdDogg  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do give away some things from time to time(usually to friends, or people who come hunt with me, or invite me out to hunt places. I don't sell any of my relics because, they are not mine to sell, I just found them. Besides, the only value of them to me is the story they tell, and the stories they will tell in the future.
