I am where you were before your surgery. I am numb from my waist down. My left leg is almost dead. My legs burn all of the time. I have no quality of life and I can't go on like this. You have given me hope. I am working with a neurosurgeon and getting tests done. I need surgery and will be getting it soon. I am so scared but I watched all of your videos about your surgery and recovery. I feel so much better. I have felt so alone with my pain. Thanks for helping me. I wish you health and happiness. By the way, your hair is the shit, love it!
Hi, my surgery will be next month 3/6/17 and I was having second thoughts after watching so many videos of ppl in pain and complaining of there symptoms. Thanks for sharing about the exercise ball, the elevated desk and I might need an ergonomic chair as well, since I work in an office sitting all day. Your enthusiasm, energy and positive attitude has encouraged me to do it. It's 10 days before my 50th birthday and I look forward to a healthier lifestyle by changing my diet and exercise as a gift to myself. I will keep you posted after and share my experience. Thanks again
Thanks for sharing. I just had a Microdiscectomy 3 weeks ago and was starting to get frustrated that I'm not healing faster. After seeing this it has shown me that it will take a lot longer than I thought to heal. Not looking forward to the long healing process but at least I now have a better idea of how long it's going to take. Hope you get to 100% ASAP
Glad I discovered your tape. I just had surgery last month after years of physical therapy, drugs, ect. I had two MRIs that were so radically different my doctor scheduled me for surgery within the week. Diagnosis was Spinal stenosis L3-4, L4-5, L5-S1 with herniated disk L5-S1. I chuckled at your "walking" tape because I'm doing the same except I'm using a walker and cane. 2 weeks in rehab facility. You are right about diet and I'm eager to get back to exercise. Maybe a bit over eager. Thanks
just wanted to say your videos are what helped me finally decide to do the surgery. just had it yesterday on my l5 s1 and as soon as i woke up the old pain was gone. but last night and today, yikes. i was expecting it to be bad but man. but i know its going to be worth it. i would rather have this pain then my old one that was pretty much running my life. thanks again for the videos.
1/2It's nice to hear you're progressing well. I had my l5/s1 done for 2 months now. The operation went really well, all the sciatic pain was completely gone right after the surgery and the numbness was gone too after a week or 2. But now, I have this same feeling as yours, it started last Saturday that my lower back is in great pain, once I lay down I can't move my hip, turning sideways and changing position is a big challenge.
I remember talking to you about it at Playlist, and even then you were saying how much better you felt after only a short space of time. Glad to see you are getting back to 'normal' lol Take care xxx
2/2 5 days a week, am always on my feet feeling healthy than ever. I treat my body with much more respect now- good posture/yoga, and it has been returning the favor. At first I thought my disc was the biggest curse ever...but now i look at it as sort of a blessing, because now I eat healthier, workout, and look at life in a whole new light. THERE'S HOPE PEOPLE, do what you need to do and your body will recover!

Thank you so much for all your videos. I've just come from an appointment being told I need a discectomy asap due to large herniated disc L4/5. Pretty nervous but I've had no quality of life for months so in a way I'm excited too! I'm overweight so I changed my diet to high protein/low fats/low carbs/no alcohol since Aug… 21lbs lighter so far… and I know this will benefit in the long-term. In a way this disc thing has been a TOTAL wake-up call. I have a sedentary job as a self-employed graphic designer so I will need to change how I work. I can't wait to be able to do all the things I've had to stop - walking (anything involving being upright), keeping fit, photography, music, work (!), travel...
My sister had/has cancer in her a back. A tumor was growing around her spine then pushing on her organs. One Week ago she had surgery, They were able to get it all and she is out of the hospital, We all hope great news is next! Thanks for this video Dan :)
Looking at all the other discectomy videos it looks like I'm pretty young having a sort of injury like this. I have a microdiscectomy scheduled for the 24th, so I'm pretty excited for that. At this point, I'm pretty much walking like you were, there's a crapload of pain and I wake up in the middle of the night frequently so hopefully this surgery will give me my life back
I hear being young for this. I am 27 and a month and a half post op. just remember back injuries not taken care of can destroy your life. long term thinking.

I'm due an MRI scan soon and I'm wondering whether surgery will be necessary to get pain relief and be able to do more. I don't have any leg pain - just a numbness in my right foot which is not a significant problem. The pain is in the low back and it prevents me from doing physical activities, as any exertion triggers the pain and the more I do the worse it gets. I hope your surgery has been successful.

Hi Dan, listening to you talking is like listening to my own experiences. THANK YOU for doing this- I am in the middle of Kazakhstan and had a microdiscectomy on my S1L5 just over 5 months ago- I had to fly out to Dubai to get it done. I feel very similar to what you're describing- soreness in the morning and I am definitely going to get a new mattress come payday! I haven't done any exercise- I think I am a bit scared. I'm going to start stretching properly- I also have a similar physiotherapy story to you. I just watched your 4 months post surgery video and I'm going to try those stretches (but gently). Thanks again- it's important to share this stuff. Lucy :-)

Thanks for sharing your experience. I am six weeks post op from back surgery for a significant herniation of my L5 S1. Surgery was the only option as I could not walk, sit, or stand without excruciating pain. I have started PT this week as I have nerve damage which I am hopeful with correct itself and the numbness and tightness in my left leg will subside. I am grateful to be out of pain and look forward to resuming my normal activities.
Hey Dan! Glad your recovery was a success. I might be having surgery soon, and I just wanted to ask, I have an L4 L5 herniate disk and it's been bothering me for over a year. Although the pain doesn't shoot to my leg it's still pretty painful in my back area and my gluts. Would you recommend surgery? Will I ever be the same again?

1/1 Hi, so I last year, I was only 19 when I woke up from a nap and felt the excruciating pain that was sciatica in my back/butt. It traveled to my legs often as well. I went to a chiropractor like an idiot and after a month of no improvement I demanded an mri referral. It was a herniation in my L4-L5. I got down to a scary weight and even had full on depression because of my limited mobility(I go to uni so I had to walk a lot). long story short, a year and a half later and I work out
Your videos have helped us to feel much more comfortable about what we know has to be done. Husband is living same life you were. His herniation is big like yours and the pain down his leg / numbness all the same. Question: Did you go to a neurosurgeon or ortho? Thank you so much for your time on this journal. Stay well and pain free!
Thanks for the videos. Gives me hope. I had surgery on L4 and L5 herniated bulging disc to relieve pinched nerves going down the front of my leg. I was getting foot drop too. cameo. suddenly and awful pain for a month. couldn't drive or walk. I am 2 months out and working part time and supposed to return back full time in a week. Doing physical therapy 3 days a week. My nerve pain still gets bad and I even had to call in sick today. Sometimes feel like I am going backwards instead of improving. Did you feel this way? I sit at work so trying to stand more at my desk and looking at getting a different chair. Feeling very depressed from how much pain I am having and still on medication.
I have a bad back from car accidents, and every night I toss and turn (from sleep problems... yay!) and the moving in my sleep is wrecking my back. That said... probably still not to your point and for that I am thankful. That mattress does sound wonderful though. Mine is low end and I wish I could afford something badass like that!
Hi Doby,I had surgery 3 years ago. Now it is kind of bothering me again. I loved to hear your advises especiallychange the diet, which i think is so important.Do you think the weather is also affect to the low back as well? Thanks,Ben
I was just wondering how you were doing on lifting . I'm only a few weeks behind you on my progress after the same surgery just slightly lower disc . I still can not lift much over 20lbs or I know it . I also have a lot of stiffness in my mid to low back . I have a good air adjustable bed and I have it at max firmness .
Hi. I've been down for a few months, but now I'm flat in my back in excruciating pain from discsL4-L5 and L5-s1. Been waiting three weeks for referral to get injection. I have disease called sarcoidosis that makes inflammatory tissue grow in different organs. I've had pieces of lung removed and tear ducts removed. Pushed my eye out of place til I got surgery. My treatment meds are making my discs deteriorate and my teeth break off. So going back up on oral steroids is not a good idea . You can watch my sarc videos on my tube to see what I've been through . Gained weight on steroids , lost. 100 lb. off steroids. Anyway I appreciate a lot that you make these videos it makes me feel not alone as I lay here waiting and waiting and waiting for the referral. Was the injection painful?
Dan Thank you for sharing your story I'm absolutely terrified about my l5 disc surgery but after watching this video I feel completely comfortable now. I suppose the amount of pain varies from person to person but was yours? thanks for taking the time to read this
Did u really have to wait 6 months to play soccer again??? How long after the surgery was it before you could go out and dance again?? I'm having the same surgery today..
I am meeting with a Neurosurgeon next Friday. I have some concerns that I am wondering about. First, using the toilet...I wonder what you did...bedpan?, diaper?, actually sit? Homehelp....would you recommend someone to be there the whole day? Eating....stick with liquids? I keep hearing how most of the time surgery doesn't help. But this leg pain is just so life changing. I hate it. Hopefully I will have good results. Going to Stroger Hospital by the way to have it done.
Don't know if you're still responding to comments here sense your procedure was a while back but I would definitely like to ask some questions. From what my doctor told me and what I'm seeing on TH-cam it sounds like my recovery is going to be a lot longer than I was told. I can't be 6 months in and not able to fully perform my job. I work for Boeing and my work is pretty labor intensive. I'd love to chat man.
Hi there , My husband is planned to go through surgery for disc herniation although he is diagnosed 2 weeks back , we are really scared to think about this option as it deals with nerves issue , your videos kind of assuring to me , but my question do u still have pain when u weak up in the morning after several months of surgery ? does this would last forever ? any feedback regarding this from ur doctor? Thanks
Hi! Curious how long you had the bulging disc and do you have any continuing nerve pain? I'm at month 4 post surgery and still having some nerve pain. Thanks for these videos!
2/2 Getting off of the bed and standing up in the morning is like hell, I feel like there are two bones crashing each other. This is worse than that I had the surgery, although I'm thankful I don't the have leg pain anymore but this back pain is killing me big time. I hope this won't last, I'm doing some stretching and taking pain meds which I hate btw.
Hello Dan! So I stumbled upon your surgery videos and they were Refreshing to see. I've been struggling with severe back and leg pain for over two years now. About 3 months ago I finally had to go to the er because I literally couldn't get out of bed. Found out I have two herniated disc causing sciatica in my left leg that's just disgustingly awful. So that being said, my question for you is- I'm getting married in March of 2016 so about 5 months from now. Should I get my surgery ASAP or should I wait until after I get married? My quality of life is kinda awful. I can't sleep, can't go out, can't do anything besides Netflix. Just serious chronic pain that oxy can't even help. If I have about a 5 month recovery time is that enough to were my honeymoon won't be spent playing board games? D: Your surgery seemed to help you tremendously! Also, thank you for not being negative about back surgery everyone I hear talk about it consistently says it's going to make you worse. Anyway, thanks!
+Larissa Mcclain Definitely get the surgery BEFORE your wedding!!! I got married August 2015 during my herniated disc pain & really wish we had waited until after surgery, I made it through the day but it involved a heavy cocktail of pain meds. Even our honeymoon had to be postponed due to the pain, I just couldn't do anything. Had my surgery in October 2015 & it's truly just nice to NOT be crumpled with pain. Also, we were able to be creative and find positions to finally be intimate, by about 4 weeks post surgery! That's a long time to wait to enjoy your new spouse!!!

@@colegrode5441 hi Cole. This flare up was after reinjury or after surgery itself.. what's your age by the way. And yes one very important question. According to your MŔI are all other of your discs were healthy??? Or they had some kind of degeneration too at the time you got your discectomy surgery.
@@makeupbykhani8178 My flare ups would happen when I physically pushed myself too much after surgery. I would get a few a year. They were easy to manage through. hi it's ashish . I want to know, after the surgery are you able to play soccer as the same way you played before your lower back problem? I mean did you get your strength back?
Hi Dan, I had the surgery recently and just wanted to ask you a few questions. I am scheduled to go back to work (lab/desk work) after 8 weeks, it has been 4 weeks so far, because doctors said the disc heals within 6 weeks. Do you think it's safe to go back to an 8-5 job so soon? Also, how long was it before you started doing yoga or gym again? I thought when you get cleared for PT, you can also start doing more normal exercises at that point. Currently, I walk a couple miles a day just to promote healing and stay healthy.

HI Dan, are you able to run yet? I had my L5-S1 microdistectomy late feb. I have been going to the gym and do light exercises, but I love running. I am not sure if I can run now without repercussion. Are you able to ?
Was the pain worse (right after surgery) than the prior pain? I know it is in a different spot (back vs leg) but my husband is considering surgery like yours but wants to know if he will feel worse at first. I believe you said yes but need to know so he can be prepared.

Hoping someone who has gone though back surgery can give me some guidance or advice. I had an open discectomy, l4-l5. The wound is roughly an inch long. The surgeon did shave some of the lamina bone to get to the herniated disc. I am now 5 months out from my surgery, and while the sciatica has gone, I have lower back pain still. It feels like wound pain still, if that makes sense. It limits my range of motion and I have sharp pains with certain movements and cannot move too freely as of yet. My back still feels stiff when I get up from bed after walk breaks and it just feels heavy, mostly when I stand from bed then somewhat dissipates after I start walking. Just wanted to know if this is still relatively normal to feel this or can I start considering failed back syndrome? Any responses from people who have gone through this process would be appreciated or anyone with knowledge about this. Thanks
What state did you have your surgery in, who was your surgeon, did your surgeon cut your back open or did you have non invasive lazier surgery? Please send response here and to faceBook
I have had a spinal fusion after being diagnosed with Degenerative spondylitisthesis. The pain is really bad and I am on a lot of pain meds. I only had it done just under seven days ago. But my hip and legs are so very swollen I have been drinking lots of fluids but don’t go very much but my legs hurt is this normal x
How long in total did it take to get back to work, did my first MRI Friday March 11th, been going this pain when it first started about the Second week of December, then the pain got REAL bad, getting out of bed, showering, using the bathroom, getting dress was excruciating, by Christmas Eve and Christmas I was practically bed ridden and recliner bound. Felt like my leg wanted to disconnect from my hip. Did about a month of physical therapy, tried getting back to work, lasted 45 minutes before it started getting painful again, I work at an assembly line, lots of bending and twisting and I've been doing it for years. But back to my work pain, my level started from about a 3, 45 minutes later the number started to rise, called my supervisor over and by the time I got off the line (2 hours total) the pain level jumped from a 3 to a 7. So hopefully I hear something new soon from my doctor, great vids, very informative and inspirational. Just a few more questions, how long did it take after the MRI to actual surgery, and when were you able to return to work, I work the assembly line, where theres no sitting, just constantly chasing cars and distorting my body to get a job done.

Hi, my surgery will be next month 3/6/17 and I was having second thoughts after watching so many videos of ppl in pain
and complaining of there symptoms. Thanks for sharing about the exercise ball, the elevated desk and I might need an ergonomic chair as well,
since I work in an office sitting all day.
Hi, any updates on your back?
Hi Cail... hope you are still active here.... I would be so happy to see your response if I get.
Just want to know that how r u doing now? After your surgery?
I mean hows your back? 7 years after microdiscectomy ?

I know you posted this like 5 months ago but I just wanted to say I'm really glad that the surgery really helped you, I remember your day-after-surgery video and it's great to see such an improvement. I have problems with sciatica and lower back pain so I know how debilitating it can be. Congrats on a successful recovery!

Many thanks, Dan. I am 1 week after surgery and your videos are a great morale booster. Lots of wise words.
How are you doing now Peter
Hey dan great videos , i have my surgery for my herniated disc at my L5 S1 on monday morning. Been realy stressed/scared/excited all at the same time..lol. all your vids made me feel a little more comfortable with my decision to get it.

Hi dan thanks for this I'm day 19 post op and managing to walk a little more everyday. Makes sense what you said on the healing part.
Awesome. Tempurpedic is a good choice. Great diet also! Glad everything is going well and I'm really happy for you!
So uh.. When will Duncan ever return? I miss him..
How are you now?
I wanted to know what series will come back
I have a bad back from car accidents, and every night I toss and turn (from sleep problems... yay!) and the moving in my sleep is wrecking my back. That said... probably still not to your point and for that I am thankful. That mattress does sound wonderful though. Mine is low end and I wish I could afford something badass like that!

Have you had any chiropractic care since your surgery?
I am meeting with a Neurosurgeon next Friday. I have some concerns that I am wondering about. First, using the toilet...I wonder what you did...bedpan?, diaper?, actually sit? Homehelp....would you recommend someone to be there the whole day? Eating....stick with liquids? I keep hearing how most of the time surgery doesn't help. But this leg pain is just so life changing. I hate it. Hopefully I will have good results. Going to Stroger Hospital by the way to have it done.
I'm two weeks post surgery and still lots of pain and drugs. This sucks!
Don't know if you're still responding to comments here sense your procedure was a while back but I would definitely like to ask some questions. Hello Dan! So I stumbled upon your surgery videos and they were
Refreshing to see. D:
Your surgery seemed to help you tremendously!

My surgeon said he would be trying to eliminate my sciatic pain but there would be traditional pain which is way more manageable.
I am in my mid 30s and all my other discs were healthy. Only other issue I have is a grade 2 spondy above my surgery location that was present before my surgery.

I would recommend a couple of hours to start. a full blown 8 hours right away doesn't seem like a good idea to me.

Thanks
Can i b walkable after my L1 spine operation
I have l4-l5 herniated disc. L5-S1 bulge. I get weird sand paper like nerve pain. Putting off surgery
What state did you have your surgery in, who was your surgeon, did your surgeon cut your back open or did you have non invasive lazier surgery? Please send response here and to faceBook
Any advice for the sciatica surgery? I'm thinking of getting it this December. Anyone please help?
My l guess is extremely bad. Hv herniated disc at L2L3 and l4l5 disc bulge with contact to l5 nerve root... My pain is extremely severe and am confused what to do... I don't want give up but l get sooo scared each tym pain starts... Is it advisable to get surgery???
