    I stumbled across this while looking at one of your other videos. While I didn't use these instructions, I did discover that my WRT-54GSv7 has a dd-WRT firmware available for it. The old firmware was so out of date that modern browsers wouldn't even let me use it! Now I've taken this old device out of a box of "donation" stuff that I hadn't gotten around to donating, and put it right back into use. Thanks!

    Your LAN protocol version 4 "mistake" properties is a life saver. I had been googling for days trying to figure out how to change the settings. I kept resetting the AP (router) to make changes. I knew there had to be a better way.

    Hi Kent, Thanks for making this video. It helped me finally accomplish what I had been struggling to do for a few months. I am using an ActionTec Verizon Router as the primary router, and a Linksys WRT54G as the secondary router. Prior to watching this video, I didn't realize I needed to install DD-WRT to disable the secondary router's WAN. (The Linksys firmware didn't have the 'disable' feature.) Now, I have good wi-fi coverage throughout my house. And the routers are both easy to administer without having to cross subnets. Thanks again !

  • @SparksFox
    @SparksFox 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Actually, when you set the WAN Connection Type to "Disabled", DD-WRT gives you the option to use the WAN port as a fifth LAN port; effectively turning the thing into a five-port switch.

    DD-WRT is free Linux-based firmware for routers that replaces the router's factory firmware. It can breathe new life into an old router, giving it enhanced performance and new features. One of the features of DD-WRT is the ability to switch the router's function to a wireless bridge.

  • @KentDiego
    @KentDiego  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes. This method requires the Access Port to be connected to the LAN cable going to main router.
    There are newer more expensive routers you can buy that can be configured as a wireless repeater and they connect to main router by WiFi and do not need wired LAN connection.

    ***** No reply button to your post. You need to connect the cheap second router (Access Point) to your main router using LAN cable. If you do not have a LAN cable there try using power line LAN adapters to connect. If main router is WiFi ch1 then I suggest ch 6 or ch 12 for the second router to avoid degrading signal but any channel will work. I like to use same WiFi password and SSID so devices will automatically connect to strongest signal as you roam through house.

    • @SimoneFrigieri
      @SimoneFrigieri 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kent Diego Hi Kent, so leaving the same password and SSID, means that the 2 routers act as paired? we'll not he the issue that our device (example PC) locks on one and won't auto-connect with the other unless it completely drops the signal, or if the signal only becomes weak it stays connected to the first connection? Am I correct?Thank you

    • @KentDiego
      @KentDiego  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Simone Frigieri They are not paired. Two different points to access network. PC will still likely lock to strongest signal and stay locked until lost. Will work same as if separate SSID but just a little easier. If different SSID you can configure PC wireless list to make strongest the higher in search order and preferred.

    Hey Kent,
    I have an old cisco wrt54gs2. My main router is a Dlink DIR-868l. Is there a way I can make the old cisco router a range extender (or repeater don't really know the difference) and put it in the living room. My TV doesn't have WiFi. So I want to put the old cisco router in the living room, have it pick up signal from the Dlink router and connect the TV to one of its LAN ports. I really don't want to purchase a range extender if I can use my old router.

  • @den0matic
    @den0matic 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great tutorial Kent. At the end you show the network and computer as the only two connections, but do you need the computer connected to use it as an AP? If I use it in a remote area, I should only need to run a cat 5 cable from router to AP, right?

    • @KentDiego
      @KentDiego  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You do need to have AP in remote area connected via LAN cable to your main internet router. Then computers in remote area can connect to AP either by WiFi or with LAN cable. If you do not have a cat 5 LAN cable running to the remote area use powerline networking adapters.

    Hi Kent,
    Great video. I'm curious why you have an extra cable going into the network towards the end.
    I have a very similar setting, except my connection goes from Router 1 (wireless)-> Powerline Adaptor -> Router 2 (wireless). I'm hoping to boost the network strength in the area near Router 2. I'm curious if the configuration you mentioned would apply as well.
    Please advise.

    So I followed your instructions as carefully as I could, and at first it seemed to work. Our phones would get full bars near the access point. However I soon realized that the AP wasn't connecting to the internet. All wires were hooked up correctly. Is there anything on the main routers end I might have messed up on? Otherwise your instructions were very good! (This is the closest I have gotten an AP to work lol)

    • @KentDiego
      @KentDiego  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      If your phones connect to the AP it seem like maybe the AP is still acting as router. Maybe the DHCP server is still running? What IP address are they being assigned? Plug LAN cable from main router into the LAN network switch port of AP and not the WAN/internet port.

    This is a great video. I just have a little question here, for the "3. Assign different wireless channel (1, 6 or 11 only) with same SSID and password"why did you mentioned in your video the AP should use different channel from main router, in other work do you mean the area overlap by the channel 1 and channel 2 will have a conflict? and for the best performance only 2 APs can be added to the same SSID network because only 1, 6, 11 are not overlapped? and should we set the channel width to 20MHz in order to avoid the conflict when having the 40MHz channel width?

    • @KentDiego
      @KentDiego  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Yang, using any other channel than 1, 6, or 11 will have overlap and AP could interfere with main router. Also you might want 20 MHz if there is any concern for interference while in overlapping coverage areas. If you have same SSID and wireless password a device will automatically roam to strongest signal.

    Hi. Worked fine. Thank you.. I have a question for you. my old router is a linksys e900. If I set it up as an access point, do I lose the higher capacity of this router? Im connecting to it at max 54mbps, while the new one gives me up to 150. Im not sure how to ask this question, sorry...

    • @KentDiego
      @KentDiego  11 ปีที่แล้ว

      The wireless speed capabilities of the Linksys e900 will not change by configuring as an access port. If it is configured at 54 mbps then that is it's max for a device using it. If a device connects to your main router it will be capable of 150 mbps.

    Hi Jack, I Googled the BT Business Hub and it seems to be a combo DSL modem and router. Noe sure if you can turn off routing in Hub 2 and configure per video. Every device on a network needs an IP. The daisy chain has first router will assign IP to second device. My method is to hook at LAN port of second device with static IP. If your arrangement works keep it.

    Hello Mr. Kent! I was wondering if the existing router (ER) and the modified router (MR) that will extend the signal need to be physically connected? At the end of the video you mention two cords: white cord going to the computer and the purple cord going to the network. Is the network the existing router (ER)? All the Best and Thanks Edgar

    • @KentDiego
      @KentDiego  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you must plug the new Access Point into a LAN cable to your existing network to extend it's range. If you do not have a LAN cable available at extended location try using powerline LAN adapter.

    Hi Kent, Thanks for the video. Really helpful! In the video, on the DD-WRT router, you disabled the DHCP server and also assigned the default gateway IP to be 192.168.1.1. Is it a necessary step to assign the default gateway IP on the access point router? I don't always see that option in certain routers, unless I go to "Advanced Routing" menu and i'm not sure if that's serving the same purpose. Thanks in advance.

    • @KentDiego
      @KentDiego  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Phuong Nguyen I have annotations in video showing how if you connect network cable to main router can skip that step. The static IP address is because when you disable DHCP server in AP your computer will lose it's IP address.

    • @KentDiego
      @KentDiego  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +zealotscout You need a LAN cable to connect AP to main router. You can use power line networking adapters for the LAN cable extension to a remote area that you are adding WiFi coverage.

  • @ITIsFunnyDamnIT

    I was told I also need a repeater to get this second wireless router (which looks identical to the one you have ) in order to get this to work. I am NOT computer savvy at all. I really want to get this other router to recognize the main wireless router so I can access the internet in my bedroom, but I'm scared I wont do something right when trying to follow this and mess everything up. Will it help me anymore to also get a repeater? Do I really need one?

    • @KentDiego
      @KentDiego  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are both similar. A wireless repeater connects to your network via wireless. The AP configuration I describe connects to your network with a LAN cable. They both perform the same function. If you have a LAN cable running to remote area or can set up a power line LAN then use the AP I describe. If not, use a wireless repeater.

    • @ITIsFunnyDamnIT
      @ITIsFunnyDamnIT 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      How much is a lane cable as to having to buy a repeater.. I went to some guy advertising on Craigslist that he can repair computers, and I had him install reinstall windows 7 on here. He was supposed to set this whole router thing up for me,he was going to charge 20 bucks, which I was going to pay.
      But twice now he has made excuses. I have the cable that goes to the Lynksys router I got that looks just like the one in your video. I have the blue cable to connect the one router to the other. But don't quit under stand about this other cable you're talking about.
      Can I get this done for cheaper and do it myself.buying this other LAN cable. I'm thinking maybe we can do this ourselves by following every step by step and keep pausing the video. Me and my mom are not computer savvy at all really. But we can afford to keep spending so. Your advice is much appreciated. If you could just let me know about this LAN cable I also need. How big is it, is there a size I need. My bedroom is the farthest from hers.
      This is an older tower computer windows 7 works on here, 2 gig memory, 160 or something hard dive. It an older model But when I first came back with it. I was able to access the internet on just two bars lit up. but then it stopped working. I had a cheap Belkin that worked better than this Linksys.
      I thought Linksys was supposed to be the better make. I had that Belkin for five years before it went bad, and I always got full signal strength and it was their cheapest ones. We don't know much about computers so any good advice on what we can do here would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for making this so long. I just hoping you'll kind of understand what we're up against.

    • @KentDiego
      @KentDiego  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      This method requires a LAN cable from main router to AP. If you cannot run a cable then try a 'powerline networking" solution. Many more expensive modern routers can be configured as a wireless repeater but this method is for old cheap router.

    Hi Kent... just want to clarify this....the remaining LAN ports on the AP router can be used when done configuring for other things? ie desktop, ps4 via hardwiring straight in the ports? My main reason for wanting to do this is for cell phones ad tablets that don't have ethernet. I have to go to the other end of the house to pick up signal or use data from my provider. thx!

    • @KentDiego
      @KentDiego  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The cable from the main router connects to AP's 4 port switch. That means the other three ports can be used for network connection by other devices. The AP provides an other connection point to your network at a remote location that my otherwise have low signal strength. If you do not have a LAN cable running to remote location use power line networking adapter.

    Enjoyed your video, but had a problem and wondered if you have any suggestions. After changing the access point router's ip address to 192.168.1.100 and rebooting the router, the computer does not want to identify the router. I went into change adapter settings and added that IP address. Now, the computer recognizes the router (router name appears), but when I enter 192.168.1.100 into the browser, it will not go to the admin page. I tried it on two different computers with the same result. Both computers were disconnected from the internet at the time, so the other router is not a factor. Thanks!

    • @KentDiego
      @KentDiego  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      The AP has no DHCP server so you have assign a static IP address to computer until it is connected with the main router's LAN network. If you type "ipconfig" from cmd window, what IP address does your computer report?
      I like to use 192.168.1.2 for the AP but .100 should work just fine if it is outside the main router's DHCP assignment range. Can you open up a cmd window and type "ping 192.168.1.100" and see if it responds? It seems like you are not really changing the AP's LAN address. Try pinging 192.168.1.1 to see what happens. Maybe you are setting the WAN IP address and not the LAN IP address?

  • @KevinCrouch0

    Dd-wrt is not supported on most routers. Flashing dd-wrt is the harder part than setting this up.
    Don't turn off dhcp unless you make sure that it is set to bridge wireless and wired (so that the request will get seen by the main router on the wire) OR (better) configure the second router as a dhcp forwarder to the main routers IP OR assign the second router its own dhcp range outside of what the main router is serving.

    • @KevinCrouch0
      @KevinCrouch0 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh definitely. Dhcp 1 with range 50-149 and dhcp 2 with range 150-199. Dhcp forwarder from 2 to 1 and a delay of a few seconds on dhcp 2 so it would respond if 1 had gone down is the most complete solution, but with the advice in the video any of what we said is better advice

      Should not matter is your main router has fixed IP. As long as it's DHCP server is enabled you will be OK.
      Make sure you have correct WiFi password in AP and ensure AP is connected to main router with LAN cable. The AP should connect a wireless device to your main router.

    Please explain "the purple cord going to the network", cos you totally lost me there. I thought the whole point was to talk to the other router wirelessly? I want to use my router as a wireless bridge, so I DON'T have to run network cable across the house. My device will be hardwired into the AP.

    • @KentDiego
      @KentDiego  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      This video is using a cheap old $15 router to extend the wifi coverage of your house. As you saw, the converted router needs to have LAN cable to rest of network. Instead of a wired LAN cable you can use a power line networking product. Then you can access the new wifi as well as connect to the router's switch ports remotely.

      You want the router and AP to have separate non-overlapping channels so no interference. Use only channels 1, 6 or 12 in 20MHz mode.

      Yes. I have my main router at WiFi ch1 and one AP at 192.168.1.2 with ch 6 and another AP at 192.168.1.3 on channel 11. You can have any SSID you want. I like having them all use same SSID and PW so can roam through house and connect to strongest signal but it would still work about the same with different SSID.

    Kent, Thanks so much for a great video. I am trying to do this setup with my Verizon FIOS Actiontec main router and an extra Netgear router (WNDR3800). But I can't seem to get it to work. I set the Verizon dynamic IP range to be from .14 to .254, and am trying to set the Netgear router to .2. I put the Gateway IP Address to be the same as the Verizon router, .1. It also insists on a Primary DNS, so I put the same as the Verizon router. I left the Secondary DNS blank. This doesn't seem to work.
    Alternatively, when I login to my Verizon router using the .1 address, the router status has a completely different "Broadband IP Address" and DNS Servers. Should I be using this information instead of the .1? THANKS!

      There are two cables at AP's LAN connectors at end. One goes to your local computer and the other goes to your main router. Do not connect anything to the WAN or internet input of AP.

    Hi Kent, your video is for when you don't have a cat5 cable available in the room in which you want wifi extended. In my case, i do have a cat5 jack in the bedroom (where wifi does not reach). I have the same old router as the one you used in you video. I plugged in to the cat5 jack, was able to make wifi available in the bedroom that way, but one major problem: it interferes with the hard wired internet connection on my desktop in the living room. So much so that i have to turn off the 2nd older router for the desktop to have a connection again. What am i doing wrong. How do i correct this? Thanks.

      The second router (Access Point) needs to have DHCP server turned off. The wireless is configured so AP and main router are not on overlapping frequency bands.

    I'm a little confused, are you using your second router to extend the network by acting as a Wireless Access point? Where one router is sending the wifi signal to the second router, and then connecting computers to that second router through ethernet cables? Or are you using the second router as an extension to the network? Where you connect one router to the other with ethernet cable and having the second router act as another wifi spot for your computers?

      +Nidhish ABRAHAM Many newer routers have a setting that will turn them into wireless repeater. That is beyond what can be done with an old cheap router. If you do not have a LAN cable running to remote location you can use a powerline networking adapter.

  • @gg_rider
    @gg_rider 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Router and AP need to be on the same network to connect. Otherwise, these would be two separate networks. Since AP is not attached by it's WAN port, it has no way of getting an IP address from DHCP on Router.
    AP is a "pass-thru" of 1.0 nwk, you want AP to stay a router w 0.0 nwk.
    You might set up RIP in Router1 that points to other 0.0 nwk, but I don't know (to be honest) exactly HOW to do that correct or IF that will work. You could maybe create a LAN nwk with WPA and a Guest nwk that's OPEN.

    • @KentDiego
      @KentDiego  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +19235641 It should only take a few seconds for IP address assignment. The WiFi AP should not take any longer than a wired connection. Only use channels 1, 6 or 11for 2.4GHz band or could have interference.

    • @KentDiego
      @KentDiego  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +alexhernandez49 Many people use the two router idea. It will work but it will keep devices on the different networks from being able to communicate. When you disable the DHCP server and assign a fixed IP to the second router, it is no longer a router, just another device on your network that allows access through WiFi.

      You need to know the IP address of your cheap router. Start with only your computer plugged into it. Type "cmd" into search window to get command prompt. There type command "ipconfig" to see what IP address the router has assigned to your computer. So if assigned 192.168.0.167 then your router is likely 192.168.0.1 (Default Gateway). If you screw up the router completely look for a small hole in back and push in paper clip to press reset switch for 30 seconds.
