  • [Part 2 of 8] Missa Cantata, or sung Low Mass, offered on the Last Sunday after Pentecost at the Roman Catholic Parish of St. Nicholas of Chardonnet in Paris, France.
This is the Eucharistic liturgy of the Roman Rite of the Catholic Church celebrated according to the 1962 Roman Missal (Missale Romanum), also commonly referred to as the Tridentine Rite, or Tridentine Mass, or Tridentine Latin Mass, or Old Latin Mass, or classical Latin Mass, or Traditional Latin Mass (TLM).
This same Mass may be viewed or downloaded on Google as one full-length video: video.google.co...
A "missa cantata" is an approved form of celebration of the Traditional Roman Rite of Mass which serves as a compromise between a Low Mass (which involves no music or incense, by definition) and a Solemn High Mass (which has strict instructions and requirements for celebration that cannot be met in many parishes). For more information, please read this fine article in the 1913 Catholic Encyclopedia: www.newadvent.o...
The texts of the Latin prayers, and English translations of the same, which are common to every Traditional Latin Mass can be found here: www.sacred-text...

im 21...ive been workin in my diocese for the traditional mass to return to every parish since i was 14...things have greatly changed in these last few years....i only pray that those who nearly lost their faith in the 1960's will regain it before its too late...u cant even conceive how many people stopped going to mass when it was changed...i beg and plead with them daily to come back...and they are still so hurt....

Keep the faith, friend. There is a God, and He is certainly an enigma, but as surely as humanity exists, God exists. Without God we collapse into a meaningless non-human existence. To quote the immortal Tolkien, "There's some good in this world Mr. Frodo, and it's worth fighting for."

In that case attend any valid Traditional Mass, SSPX, SSPV, TRENTO, CMRI, THUC, all are Trent. Our Trento chapel has Mass & Confession often during the week, an apartment attached to the chapel is convenient for the priest to stay & visit the & dying. He is for weeks at a time, offers Mass daily. You become familiar not by the Mass you attend, but by the Missal you use, with English translations of the Mass next to the Latin.. Call Fr. Baumberger & have one sent. He is SSPV in Montana.

As an Anglican Convert I was received into the Church with an open mind. Our Lady weeps for England her Dowry and St. Denys cries to OLJC for France. Only repentance and Love can bring Europe back to the true Catholic faith. It doesn't matter if we see God in the 'Antique Use' or in a well sung modern mass

I know, but the one thing I adored about the TLM was that one day a Gautamalan came into my parish, he picked up a Latin-Spanish Missal and for an hour and a half, we spoke the same language. A friend of mine, before he converted, regularly attended TLM together. But, yes getting obsessed with Latin and other pre-Vatican II goodies isn't too healthy for the faith either. I've spoken with sedevacantists who think the faith is just an intellectual chess game.

Very pretty picture of the Misal at 4:34, but this is not the incantation of the Gloria as sung by the priest!
Very glad to hear the congregation singing in alternance with the choir.
Does the Traditonal Church count Sundays after Pentacost or after Trinity?
What justifies praying in Latin and reading the Bible in French?

The Epistle was read in French-this is not an Indult Mass approved by the Catholic Church but a Mass of the Society of St Pius X which is not in communion with Rome formally.

Order of Service Holy Communion: which one? Several versions are authorised by the Anglican Church including those of 1552, 1662, 1928, the Series 1, 2 3 of the 1960s & 70s etc.

Yes, the epistle was read in french, but I don't understand what has that to do with the fact that it's SSPX. Indult masses uses this too, or reading in vernacular after (the gospel too). It has been this way since long ago.

When I heard mass in Tours Cathedral in 1966, I was not phased because the order of service was more or less that of a "High" Anglican Cathedral Mass and the kyrie and gloria (sung on this video) were familiar to me.
Not all Anglican churches have this tendancy; far from it! Methodists invite "all ye that love the Lord Jesus" to approach the table and receive communion. this is very sane, it strikes me.

It's funny because when I asked my priest if he could say a Latin Mass he told me that a 19 year old should not worry about a dead mass and that no one would want to attend. But when I told a few of the people in the parish they all said they would like to have a latin mass. I think most priests are refusing to say the the old mass because they don't know how to speek Latin. It's sad really.

Trent Mass cannot "die out." It is perpetually guaranteed on earth. Pope St. Pius V finalized the Trent Mass in perpetuity & Catholics offer Mass for themselves & the souls in Purgatory, the effication of which is applied to shorten their suffering for sins Our Lord cannot remove the Trent Mass from the world--He died to bring its Grace &fruits thus Trent Mass bestows these gifts on the souls of the Church Suffering in Purgatory and on the Church Militant on earth.

@polakmax Excuse me but the new liturgy is very similar to a protestant service. It is radically different to the Tridentine Liturgy. The prayers were stripped out and it dumbed down Catholicism. This mass converted Nations and Saints celebrated it. Always in history, it has been culture and the world that has been shaped by Catholicism, why? Because the Church's transcendence speaks unto the world, however if we incorporate the world in us, we lose the faith of the apostles.

Sorry but no for the latin.
The only reason to pray, sing and celebrate in latin WAS that it was a 'universal' language.
However a 40 year old friend can sing the Agnus Dei, but has no idea what it means!
Latin was not the first language used by Christans. Were early believers not able to give worship & glory to God?
"Do this in remembrance of me" is directed towards believers, I'd say.

Vatican officials has confirmed that Pope Benedict XVI plans to loosen restrictions on celebrating the old Latin Mass, reviving a rite that was essentially swept away by the revolutionary reforms of the Second Vatican Council. Pope Benedict is also acting in a bid to reach out to the Society of St. Pius X, and bring it back into the Vatican's fold.

The fractured parts of the Mass had numerous defects before the Council of Trent was called to codify in perpetuity a single Mass Form of the Consecration. You can read about these defects in the ACTA in Latin proving the Mass was NOT IN EXISTENCE in the Trent Form, but was varied & questionable--even at times had become invalid with so many unintentional defects. The history of these changes prior to 1570 is found in the Doctors writings of that time, in Latin, collected by Gratian's Decretals.

The sacraments of confession and marraige are invalid as the priests do not posses valid faculties from the local ordinary. The only exception is confession, but only when the penitent is in grave risk of death. Regular confession is invalid. All of the priests are still suspended meaning. This means that the Mass they say is Valid, but illicit because again they have no faculties provided by the local ordinary.

  • @MikevanAtten

when I put the tridentine rite next to the nuvo ordo messa, the only difference is the omission of the extensive opening ritual that stems from the early period of the church in Rome. then the bishop (pope) went into one of the seven churches, where he arrived on horseback (hence the choir) and sprinkled the believers before going to the sacristy to prepare for Mass. The use of Latin alone is simply because the missionaries have learned and transferred in the first centuries. this is therefore not so important for a good celebration.
The prayers for the Eucharist have been shortened to a powerful prayer. Jesus also said that you should not pray with many words because God knows what you want.
In the end it's about being there with all your heart. whether it is the tridentine or the nuvo ordo.
Do not judge because then you are already convicted.
    Pacem.

Asthetics have nothing to do with valid Mass, it can be said by a valid priest anywhere--Mass in wartime was offered on the back of a jeep or in a tent. Only an altar stone is required, a priest had his Mass kit, chalice, wine & host. Priests said Mass on the back a jeep, under fire. Anything to bring Sanctifying Grace of Our Lord's Sacrifice to soldiers about to die. Sedevacantists knew again in 1968 what St. Athanasius & the flock & early Christians had to do. It's all about validity.

@ReasonableAtheist I don't think that believing in the credibility of deductive arguments for God's existence is anything to do with wishful thinking. In fact if you read the 5 ways of St Thomas Aquinas, the ontological argument of St Anselm, the Kalam Cosmological argument and many other rational proofs for God's existence, you will see that such a being is more than necessary to explain the intricacy of the universe and why there is something rather than nothing.

Correct. This part has always puzzeled me. I have asked many priests about this and have received as many answers. I personally fell that they have the necessary faculties or not. The only exception I really see is in immediate danger of death. Even a defrocked, laicized priest has faculties in this case. I hope that the faculties situation is cleared up in Rome soon. Good Catholics should not have to worry whether a priest has faculties or not.

If the people want to know the actual words they can read the Mass in their own language. That is what the Missal for the Faithful is. Every missal can be transposed to their own language. The Priest, howedver, MUST OFFER THE MASS IN THE LANGUAGE COMMANDED by the Church. Vernacular will never be used to offer Trent Mass. Never. .
