  • Every Cat model has its distinct sound, which can be identified a mile away. Opinions differ about the best sounding Cat model, but I vote for the 4 cylinder bark of a D4.
This looks like a nicely restored original D4, but was in fact assembled from parts of 2 tired machines.

This is probably the best running 50's era D4 i've seen on utube.

      Congrats!
      They're wonderful machines.
Speaking of Cats, we have a Maine Coon and a maybe 50% mix. Wonderful friends.

Heck, I've been looking for a 7U or a D4C for several years now. They're like a '68 Z-28 Camaro: everyone wants one but can't find one.

The 70's era D-8 Cats sound the most bad ass I think, they don't make engines like those any more

Dave Calvo love the sound of those old naturally aspirated Cats. They could lug down almost to a stop without stalling. I remember the cable controlled blades from the 40's and 50's.

I know folks that ride Harley's love straight pipes, is it the same reason that dozer operators rarely have a muffler as well ? Neither seem to both wearing any hearing protection and operate their machines for hours at a time .
