I think an easier way to discriminate between the large and small date is that they differ in the size of the top of the 8 compared to the bottom of the 8. The small date has a smaller circle forming the top of the eight compared to its bottom and a large date has two equal circles one on top of the other

I've always looked at the 2. The 2 on the small date is not as thick as the 2 on the large date.

Good stuff as always BlueRidgeSilverHound!! This is a great topic to discuss. Thanks so much. Being able to tell the difference between the types is crucial but can be confusing. As some others have mentioned, the look of the 8 and/or the 2 can also be used to discern between the types. Small date has the more stylized 2 with the middle part slightly curved. The small date 8 has a smaller upper than lower oval whereas the large date has a more circular and equally sized upper and lower. Thanks again!!

Good job on a confusing topic. I know. I’m always giving you hell. But this time you nailed it.
If people want to get to the next level on this they need to look up “Rockwell Hardness.” This mess got started because the Cu plated Zn didn’t flow well in the press.
There are literally endless issues related to planchette hardness. It’s well worth studying if you want to make some money.

I just noticed that Lincoln's profile also appears to be 'zoomed in' on the 'larger' penny and LIBERTY is a different type set. Thank you for setting them together. It is so much easier now to identify.

Hello BRS, I appreciate Your content/videos I am a very amateur searcher/collector. I do not go out of My way to search however when I do get change I am looking over the coins more often. As I continue to watch and learn from Your videos ect.. I enjoy it more and more so thank You. My quest is i have come across a 1982-D Lincoln Cent and I weighed it with a digital and it weighs 3.8 Because I am a amateur I needed Your expertise video to look at the date (with fingers crossed🤞🏼) I am using a magnifying glass bc I am not as trained … however the 8 in 82 looks like a small date for sure (smaller top with smaller hole, not as blown up or rounded out) the 2 seems to look more like a large date (with not much of a hook at the bottom) also the 1 & possibly 2 seems to be just as long or high as the 9 & 8 ? I probably sound like a amateur but I am quite confused bc one digit represents small and another represents more lrg. I am being as open minded looking at it and not partial one way or the other or naive thinking im going to get rich quick thinking. I respect My Experts (You and Many other well known in the Coin Community) as well as the Hobby itself. Maybe I can have My local shop take a quick look. Thank You so much for Your videos and Bless You. Best Regards. Chad

I am going to burst a lot of bubbles by sharing what I have researched. It's rather easy to mistake the large date as the small. With bad eyesight, poor lighting, no usb microscope and the lust for suddenly being wealthier off some pennies, had me thinking I had struck gold. I read a different article regarding the 1982 small date and it explained that the small date modification was due to the fact that the new zinc planchets required more time to strike them to get the details onto the coin. It caused the productivity to slow down and the small date dies were modified with the motto and liberty being reduced as well. If you look you will notice that they have changed as well, and the last number of the dates are further from the rim as well. If your unsure that you have a large date 82, get a 72 and a 92 and set them side by side and you will see the differences between those two coins and then you will see that the 82 will either match up closer to the 72, or if you're lucky the 92. I thought I hit pay dirt and doing the comparison realized I didn't hit jack sh$t!

  • @poormansstack
    @poormansstack 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Great info! The 60 and 70 are hard to tell the easiest way to tell the 82 is the 2 itself. The 2 on the large date looks like straight this 2, the small date is curved like a s.

Good day BlueRidgeSilverhound: TriplePennyLogan here. I really enjoy your youtube content, without these videos I wouldn’t have a clue. I'm 98% sure I have a #1-1982 small date copper penny (3.1g), #2- 1982 Large date copper (3.1g) #3 1982 D copper coin that also weights (3.1g). #4 1982 Large date Zinc (2.5g) and #5 1982 Small date Zinc. I would greatly appreciate your input. Also would it be a fair statement at this time to say it would be worth getting these coins graded regardless of condition. See attached pictures.

    Greetings ,
Hope all is well and your family and you are healthy and hopefully still sane after enduring 2020. I enjoyed your 1982 D copper small date video and found it informative. One quick question regarding this coin. I found an example of this coin. Unfortunately I found it in a parking lot and then only after it had suffered the damaging effects of being run over. Aside from bad timing in finding it when I did it still remains a 1982 D copper small date in rough condition. I want to sell it. As its in poor condition is having it graded and certified worth the expense or will it produce negative returns at this point? Thank you for any input you have on this.
    Chris

Hello, just wanted to clarify: you say a 1984-d "copper" penny is valuable--whereas the PCGS website only lists a "Bronze" variation in this year / mint. Is this what you're referring to? Because a Red 67 is only $600. I would be very curious to know if this is the case beacsue I believe I have a 1982-d "bronze"--it's definitely not zinc, whatever it is--and would be ecstatic if it were worth 50K !! It is the "large date" variation, though.

Looking at the two comparisons I noticed the bottom penny has a smoother surface than the top. The top one has a bunch of bumps on its surface.

Are 1982 large date 3.1 gram pennies worth anything. I just got a whole roll for the bank.
They look dark in color and in circulated condition. Thanks for any replying. Roland

Still confused my Shaun. Do both SMALL and large dates carry a premium? ESPECIALLY with the D MINT mark. Are you ok ? I was as many of your ENTHUSIASTS concerned about that PENNY AUCTION thing yesterday. Just remember my friend..
Your health is more valuable than the PENNY or any other currency
    AND REMEMBER..
We all love ya out here in U TUBE land. SERIOUSLY you come before those coins.Where would we go for that MONDAY MARKET REPORT. I CAN ASSURE YOU BY THE COMMENTS YOUR FRIENDS LEFT YOU LAST EVENING THAT "YOU ARE LOVED". BE GOOD ,SMILE, And keep up the great work@❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

I have four 1982D Pennie’s with large 2, yet all 4 coins weigh 3.1G. I am told that the 3.1G 1982D is valuable.

Hello ! I have 3 1982 small dates..(not a 1982 D copper/bronze sadly!)..But I DO have a small date 1982 copper/bronze with a DDR..3.11 grams and a 1982 small date zinc with a DDR! ..and a 1982D small date zinc ! Absolutely positive about the small dates after looking through an extreme amount of 1982's They stand out and are unmistakable ! All 3 are in AU very nice conditions...are any of these valuable ? Would like to have graded but have never done before and not sure worth the cost..although I believe I am on to something special with at least one of them ! Would love to get your opinion and send pics ..if so, please let me know where to send them too ! Love your videos !
