- How to make your Silverado or GMC truck sound instantly better by this free exhaust flapper mod.
GM has an active valve in the exhaust for the DOD or displacement on demand function to cancel out the low frequencies of the exhaust. This modification will show you how to hold that valve open all the time so you get all the HORSEPOWER!!!!!

Watched this and went right and did it. Thank you sir. Way better! After spending $70k on a new trail boss and $8000 on 6" lift, wheel and tires. There are no beans left for any exhaust mods.
Camera doesn't do it justice. But way better in person. And it's free, can't beat that!
lol my exact thought. Can you vouch on the better sound? I feel like it was very subtle but idk if it’s worth it
@georgehernandez1502 in my opinion it's worth the minimal effort
@@EssMotorsports Ty sir. I live in an apartment complex and have been debating straight piping for some time now, but I don’t want my neighbors to complain. Someone did this and put exhaust tape on the resonators and it sounded pretty decent.
@georgehernandez1502 cheap and easy. If u don't like it then remove it. Simple enough to try
I really liked the back-to-back video clip comparison, really highlights the difference.
That valve makes an owl sound that I only just identified when you moved it manually. 😂
Great video sir, I'm installing right now and I can't wait to see what happens!
Mine was rattling like crazy on cold starts. It would quite down after a few minutes of warming up. I had it cut out and pipe spliced in.
Just did this yesterday. It surely sounds nice but now i just want it a little louder 😅. I wanna hear it more when i accelerate!
Get you cold air intake and it will growl much louder when you accelerate
Use my reciprocating saw cut just before that valve and just behind the stock muffler and clamped me a Borla XR-1 in its place and its got a deep growl sounds great and the Borla won t rust there stainless steel paid $136 on Amazon for the Borla. I put in on my Trail Boss LT sounds great
Did it get louder or more of a growl? I was thinking of doing that
Did it drone
Just did my 2016... Thx solid easy mod
Best FREE upgrade ever!
I popped spring off. Opened valve and put spring back on.
Great video, very informative. Love the before and after. You need to dual it.(won't be much louder justa little more rumble) I don't understand gms thought behind a single port. I bought the 20 Z71 LTZ
Gm's thought is cheaper!! So unless you pay the upgrade, you get the single exhaust...lol.
Mine is AHEAD or upstream of the muffler.
I wanted to retain that qiietstealth sound of the factory exhaust so I opted for the stainless steel motorized dump valve.
It can be loud or quiet when it suits me.
I put the dump valve ahead of the flapper valve and used a turndown to blow it to the side of the truck.
Yeah thats a good idea! Even with the flapper open it's still not even loud tho! Haha
Put a Flowmaster super 44 in my truck tonight and ran into that valve so I left it and it barely changed the sound. If I cut it out and put a peice of pipe in there will that give it the normal effect? Or should I cut the valve and the secondary muffler by the tailpipe as well
yep, sounds deeper
I just dropped the muffler completely, down pipe with a tip. Sounds nicer then this and gets looks and compliments
I cut it and the stock muffler off and replaced with a Flowmaster delta flow 50 sounds great and still no drone in the cab
Did you cut the secondary muffle by the tailpipe as well?
@delcooutdoors4143 not yet but I might still along with installing a tip
And we CAN here the difference!!
On camera it's hard to tell I know. But in reality it does change the tone a lot.
We can tell, that great before and after at the end, back and fourth. Thats what most guys leave out, GREAT VID !
Have you had any issues since this mod was done? How did it hold up? Just curious if anything had popped up since. Great video BTW very informative, well edited, and not too long.
Zero issues. No rattles nothing. Still sound good too. I'd definitely do it again.
I think the only problem may be at cruising speed in V4 you may get an exhaust drone which sounds very similar to the 8L90 TCC shudder.
@Jonathan Bialas if I really really pay attention with no music. I can hear the helicopter noise in v4. But it's so minor doesn't bother me at all.
So is this where the rattling comes from; I hear it randomly but while driving....I want to say low gear/ while going up ramps on freeway and we'll after I got it tuned to stay on V8 mode at all times...and actually I started noticing this after the tune and started getting the error code P-0430 too🤔
I don't think this valve would rattle. Sounds like something else. U could always try this trick and see if it does anything.
Seemed louder and more rumble effect before. Idk, maybe it’s just phone mic and speakers being dumb. These type things are a in person thing so can’t really be sure through videos. I’d try it though and see 🤷🏻♂️
Camera doesn't pick it up. Real life it's deeper. I really like it.
@@EssMotorsports yeah, I figured. That’s bad thing about videos, it don’t pick up all the sounds cause they usually have noise cancelling mics. It’s worth a try though
So, you rotate the flapper towards the front of the truck or the rear?
@bloodstorm1231 run the vehicle and watch which way it rotates under normal operation at idle. Then u know which way to rotate it
Or just use a metal hose clamp
I have '19 Silverado High Country with a 6.2L. Mine as one valve before the muffler and one after the muffler. Did yours, or did it just one after the muffler?
Pretty sure mine was just one after the muffler.
@@EssMotorsports thanks for the reply
6.2 has two and the 5.3 has one. 😁
Just after on mine.
With the value open, you don't hear that hiss sound anymore.
i don’t think it is on the 2011 silverado, i’ve been looking but can’t find it
Yeah idk when a valve was implemented
Any idea how that impacts fuel economy?
It's not going to make a noticeable change. But it it would be better if anything making the exhaust free flowing.
@@EssMotorsports I'm just upgrading to this from an old Dodge, so like, I miss the growl, but I'm also looking forward to the wildly improved fuel economy. 😄
Sounded louder first seemed like
My mic was not the best then. Definitely louder and deeper with open valve. Camera didn't pick it up great
I’m not brave enough to do a TH-cam video, if I do- I will probably try to do it like you did. Nicely done.
That said…
I didn’t catch if you mentioned what engine you have, but I’m guessing that’s not a 6.2. Maybe I should try it out and send it to you.
I also don’t think I caught how long your screw was. I have a 21 RST 6.2 and the run up is disappointing to say the least.
I bought my wife a 2023 suburban, and it sounds much better than my truck in terms of run up.
It is actually the 6.2L. It's noticeably more tone cruising around. I can't recall the screw length. 1" to 1.5" something like that.
I just checked my 2019 4.3L and it has a round valve with no corners to stick a screw in. Anyone else experience this?
I'd just get a wide clamp, like exhaust band camp and clamp it open.
Yes. Mine is round also on my 21 5.3. Used a hose clamp to hold it open.
just put an electric downpipe cutout. you'll have loud and quiet with a push of a button.
Have you seen how restrictive it is fully open? Best to chop it out
Yeah I've seen pictures online. Not going for max HP on this, for DD it's just enough sound.
Yes. Looks like there is half a ball mounted on the one side of the flapper...lol
you only did one flap tho i think there is two one on each side
Mine only has one after the muffler
If my memory serves me correctly, the 6.2 will have one before and one after the muffler. The 5.3 will just have one valve.
Is this on the 2006 1500 silverado?
2018 1500
Buy yourself an AFM disable module.
That was the best money I ever spent!
valve? what valve? lol
Im doing this to get rid of the squeaking. My god i hope that engineer was punished. 😂
No real downside from what I've seen
Nice hack!!
😂
No different to me.
The camera did not pick up the low frequency good at all. There is a definite note change in the exhaust.
Great video and hack.
My 2016 6.2l valve is not working as it should, so I'm going to do this hack to try it out... honestly, mine sounds so bad at start-up as well as while driving I thought I had an exhaust leak at first.
I may be swapping the mufer as well in the future for a little more rumble.
Again, great hack.
Glad I found this.
@jefjulday Thanks Man! I'm still rocking this mod. To me it's perfect, also helps its free! Haha
So basically...
Sounds worst. Get glasspacks
Glasspacks suck
@@mrperfect3329straight pipe 😂
Glasspacks suck dick. And they sound like shit.
