Pink liquid is called sol curry ( kadhi ). Sol kadhi can be consumed as an appetizer just before meals, during meals with rice, or even as a digestive after meals. It is made from kokums berry (Garcinia indica) and coconut milk and very popular in coastal regions of Maharashtra and Goa(States in India). 'Sol' is also known as kokum in Marathi (Maharashtra's state language).
@7:05 the moment when Mark says no AC!!! They would be stunned to hear. Mark is so humble and is always seen to show positive side of any food he eats or place he visit. Kudos.
I love that you ate with your hands in this video, shows that you respect the culture and care about getting a full India experience. 👏🏾 You're also beautiful as well as your personality.
The big smile on my face the entire video was a reflection of your enthusiasm and joy. You are such a nice breeze for the soul Mark. Bless you. And I wish there was a recipe for that veggi burger with the chutneys they've used. I would love to try that. If someone here has it please post it.
It's just a simple dish start with mashed patatos add some turmeric some salt, ginger garlic paste, some paperica, some coriander, some fenugreek seeds and mix it all together and dip it into a mixture of chik pea + salt + water and deep fry it. Your vada is ready. Just put it into a. bun and BON APETIT.
Ever since I learned it is rude to use the left hand in cultures that eat with their hands I have practiced this. I'm pretty clumsy as well. I have to sit on my left hand to keep from using it for tearing bread. In fact watching Mark struggle I paused this and looked up technique. Yeah, we are both doing it the hard way. Now I look forward to more practice using better technique!
@ 1:01, the man charged you Rs.10 ( that is illegal ), its very clearly mentioned in the ticket you bought & the boat itself that don't pay anything extra for upper deck., but they do charge and people still pay, but first time this activity recorded.
I agree. I never mind little price increases as a tourist IF I think that it is helping someone feed their family. If it is egregious and completely arbitrary then I get angry. But 10rs to most Westerners is nothing, but 10rs from each tourist over the course of a day, it might be the only way that man might be able to provide the basics to his family (and I mean no disrespect in saying that).
Andy Pereira there are over 10,000+ Food dishes all over the India ! You will find different foods in different states .... & All the states has their own culture and food....
Just fry a ball of mashed potatoes dipped in beer batter & eat the fritter in b/w a bun.. Not the same taste but it will do until you taste the real deal.
Like music food needs no language. Both are languages in themselves. I'm currently listening to Sona Jobarteh who wonderfully sings which I don't understand a word about......but her work is fantastic. From Mumbai,India.
I love how Mark tries all kinds of food, at restaurants and also street food. Many westerners have a lot of concerns in trying street food, especially in developing countries. I'm from Mumbai and I love my Vada pav :)
Apart from the food that is brought by the "INVADERS" (BIRYANI, QORMA, KEBABS, PULLAOW, SAMOSA, MOST OF THEIR SWEETS like firni, Ghulam jaman etc etc etc etc, just Wikipedia for the further evidence and corroborate) India has flavourless lentil and vegetable dishes that are native to India. So, to have the best main course meals it's a must that you go to what most of them call a, "Muslim" resturant, like the ones on Muhammad Ali road. Even in this video Mark's main course meal is from a Muslim resturant. And now that they have banned beef. Many dishes are already gone. But you can definitely try them out (like Nihari in breakfast) at a Muslim household, if you know one. But he'll definitely not come on camera. Before 1300 years ago before the "invaders" came to india, there was only brahmacharis and bhujans didnt include the ingredients that might make your food tasty. So you might find only dishes like Rajma or idli dosa or chola bhatura that might be native to India. Others are brought by the those whom they call "invaders", along with all their best architecture, poetry (and poets), literature, Music (ghazal, qawali and others etc) and anything any everything that sells out side India is basically given to India by the ones whom indian don't respect so much (including the British). Historically the royalty (culture, food, music, literature and poetry as well) in India has always moved from WEST to EAST. Recently they tried to impose their home grown leadership (through BJP and it's other umbrella organisations like RSS and BJP and vhp etc) in India and you're seen it's results upon us.
Thank you mark for recording and showing us these wonderfully informative experiences that you are having that shows the best of India's food culture. I am loving them.

You inspired me to look around this area for an Indian restaurant,. :D I finally found a worth while Indian restaurant here in Washington, and I loved the food so much, I ordered an extra helping just to bring home with me, lol. They gave me more for the take away than they did for the sit in dining portion, I had enough lamb curry for three days, it was awesome. I was too scared to try the extra hot curry though. :/ These days I get heartburn just drinking water, lol.
@12.34 That pink liquid is known as sol kadi..This is a famous drink from Maharashtra's Konkan region and often had after a spicy fish/chicken curry and rice meal. Discard the kokum(Garcinia indica) from the water, add the coconut milk mixture into the kokum water, mix well, garnish with coriander leaves and serve chilled.
@Mark Weins Dude, you've nailed the art of having food without a spoon and a fork, the way we usually do... Kudos to you! I enjoy watching your videos, a lot! The pink curry that you're wondering about, is called the 'Solkadhee'. It consists of fresh mangosteen juice, combined with coconut milk, and seasoned with garlic, cumin, green chillies, and coriander, with salt and sugar added to taste. It's one of the prime dishes of the Konkani / Malwani cuisine that you had here.

Mark I am from UK,I have been watching your videos when you were in Pakistan.i think The Pakistani people are more friendly and food also excellent.I can imagine you had lovely time in Pakistan !!!
+Kunal Mulik He finds it interesting because up until the 15th century corn was unknown to the Eurasian people. It's indigenous to the Americas, not a part of traditional Eurasian/African cooking.
LOL "even India grows corn" what does that even mean? its grown everywhere around the world, maize is a very common thing and India being an agricultural country they surely grow it whats surprising?
India is 8th largest producer of corn in the world .......we produce enough to meet our need and export a little........ i don't think we export a lot of corn though and even if we do it is limited to South East Asian countries bcz as you must be knowing that countries in both north and south American continent are huge producer of corn....... :)
Love u mark....when u smile with those extraordinary expression it's a relief to eyes...the way u describe... everything is awesome I love to see your videos ...
I think it's about luck as well, the last time I was there,I was there for 3 weeks and only got sick once(I had ice cream....tututut I know)but I kept going for street food/restaurants and I loved it,so I was lucky too
Thanks Wikipedia! ... the pink thing (Solkhadi) is some sort of berry caled Kokum, which is blended with coconut milk, it is used as a digestive after the meal.

+Kunal Mulik Exported to where? Exported as grain or as corn byproducts like corn oil?
India is 8th largest producer of corn in the world .......we produce enough to meet our need and export a little........ i don't think we export a lot of corn though and even if we do it is limited to South East Asian countries bcz as you must be knowing that countries in both north and south American continent are huge producer of corn....... :)

was there a few years ago for 4 weeks. 3 of those stomach problems. I hope you have more luck with the food there!
Seriously, I don't know how Mark does it. He must have a cast iron stomach. I was there for 10 days and sick for 3 of them.
He probably stocks up on all sorts of medicine allowed into India.
I think it's about luck as well, the last time I was there,I was there for 3 weeks and only got sick once(I had ice cream....tututut I know)but I kept going for street food/restaurants and I loved it,so I was lucky too
it's mainly immunity! I know my gf doesn't get sick anymore when she visits her family in Delhi, but she used to get sick every single time.
that was probably heat stroke, not food poisoning, believe me you know if food poisoning.
Welcome to India mark. Enjoy Indian hospitality n food.
