Day 8: Istanbul, Turkey - On Day 8, we flew on Turkish Airlines and from Muscat to Istanbul. The flight on Turkish Airlines was fantastic, and I had my first ever Turkish breakfast while in the sky. We then checked into The Ritz-Carlton hotel, and had some amazing Istanbul street food kofte for lunch. Istanbul is a city that I’ve always wanted to visit, and I can’t wait to explore and eat more Turkish food!
0:15 Turkish Breakfast on Turkish Airlines - To begin this day and video my wife and I were on a flight with Turkish Airlines (member of Star Alliance) from Muscat, Oman to Istanbul, Turkey. Turkish Airlines is an amazing airlines, and on business class they served us Turkish breakfast since we happen to fly into Istanbul early in the morning. Bread, olives, cheese, honey, and then the main dish included eggs and vegetables. Great flight with Turkish Airlines!
2:42 Istanbul Atatürk Airport - We arrived to Istanbul very early in the morning and after grabbing our bag, we found the bus outside the terminal to go to Taksim Square. The bus cost 11 TL ($3.73) per person.
4:57 The Ritz-Carlton, Istanbul - Marriott Hotels sponsored my stay in Istanbul, and it was an honor to have the opportunity to stay at the The Ritz-Carlton, Istanbul, which is located just a 5 minute walk from Taksim Square, with a fantastic view of the Bosphorus. We got all checked in, and the room was fantastic.
7:44 Istanbul Street Food - Kofte Sandwich Stall - After taking a little rest in the hotel and drinking some coffee, Ying and I were both pretty hungry. There’s a small Istanbul street food stall that serves amazing grilled kofte, just down the street from The Ritz-Carlton, Istanbul, and that’s exactly where we headed, right at lunch time. Before ever arriving I could smell the aroma of the meat on the grill and then I could see the colorful display of peppers and parsley surrounding the grill as well. I ordered a kofte sandwich, and after toasting the bread, he added in a bunch of little meat kofte patties, some tomatoes and onions and peppers, seasoned with some spices and chili powder and handed it to me. For 10 TL ($3.40) for sandwich and drink, this was about as good as it could possibly get for Istanbul street food! Wow it was so good.
12:17 Taksim Square and Turkish Coffee at Mandabatmaz (Istiklal Street) - After that amazing kofte sandwich, we continued walking through Taksim Square, one of the most famous landmarks of Istanbul and then on to the walking Istiklal street. The highlight for me was stopping at Mandabatmaz for a cup of the most amazing Turkish coffee I’ve ever had. Turkish coffee - 5 TL ($1.70).
17:04 Fish and Meat House - At this point Ying and I were starting to get really sleepy - we hadn’t really slept the night before. So we stopped for an early dinner at Fish and Meat House to have some grilled fish. I had the grilled sea bream, which was simple and plain but excellently fresh and cooked perfectly. The salad was also delicious. Total price for everything - 74 TL ($25.12).

Turkey is remembered across the for it's outstanding food culture. The people who prepare these foods are one of the best food artists of the world.
My dad worked fixing airplane de-icing trucks and his job sent him to Istanbul. He loved it there and from this video I can see why. :) My dad passed away this last March and watching your video is bittersweet as I'm always wondering if what I'm seeing is somewhere he visited too. One day I hope to be able to visit myself. :)

Mark, as a Turkish woman, I have some food suggestions for you...
When you are in istanbul, you must try the followings:
1- Balik Ekmek (fish bread sandwich which being cooked in boats and people buy& it by the sea.
2- Kokoreç (Lamb intestines sandwich. It's wrapped around a metal skew and cooked on a char coal)
3- Midye dolma (stuffed mussels in shells with rice with onions and black pepper. you eat the stuffed mussels with a squeeze of lemon juice)
4- pide and / or lahmacun (they are kind of Turkish pizzas. Thin though and as topping the mixture of beef mince, grated onions, grated tomatoes, finely chopped herbs like parsley, some spices/seasoning like paprika, black pepper and salt. They must be cooked in a big oven with wood fire to give them this smoky taste. Lahmacun is round shape and pide is long shaped dough. Pide has also more different toppings)
5- ishkembe çorba (creamy lamb stomach soup served with crush of garlic and a squeeze of lemon or vinegar. You much eat it fresh/warm bread)
6- Türk kahvaltisi (Turkish breakfast. specially the one called Van kahvaltisi. Van is a city which is very famous/ well known About breakfast. )
7- döner kebap ( You need to find the ones with thinly sliced beef marinated in milk, a little yogurt and some light spices and cooked with wood fire)
8- baklava (layers of thin filo pastry and crushed walnuts or pistachio nuts, baked in oven and soakee in syrup)
There are many more delicious Turkish food that I can't write them all unfortunately.

You should eat mantı, yaprak sarma, biber dolması, gözleme, su böreği, kuzu tandır, kuru pilav, mercimek köftesi, kısır, çiğ köfte, incik,zeytinyağlı fasulye, alinazik, içli köfte, karalahana sarması, hamsili pilav, tarhana çorbası, kavurma, etli sebzeli güveç, karadeniz pidesi,inegöl köfte, etli ekmek, kadınbudu köfte and more. When I was 14, I played this game called Assassin's Creed Revelations. The game was set in 1500s Istanbul and since then I really loved Turkey. The city's just so beautiful the first time I played it, I was amazed. So I began looking up pictures of Turkey in real life, and it's better than what I expected. I have been planning to go there soon, but that's a long road ahead. I'm gonna make it happen.

what i really love about istanbul is that they are REALLY caring of their stray cats in the city. lovely people and city.
Oh yes. Once I needed to give sadiqa in Istanbul n I could see so many stray but beautiful n healthy cats on a street. I bought some nice chicken meat n started distributing them but to my surprise they were so full n didnt want to eat it, though they were so thankful to me n more importantly the shop owners on that street were talking to them with so much love and asking them to eat the meat n they went myaaaauuuunnnn. when I returned from istaklal street half of the meat was still left. That was a super cool experience

Actually! yes.... it is because of your amazing political leaders.... the whole country is so beautifully peaceful n the most surprising gesture is the distribution of tons and tons of iftari meals to the general public in Ramadans, the arrangements of the beautiful Islamic reciting before the iftar and the mega iftar at all the public places where locals bring their own iftar and dine it with their families. The prayers at the Sultan Ahmet and other prominent Mosques and the religious classes behind the Sultan Ahmet mosque with the free tea/ coffee/ goodies supply for the attendants both locals and expats, its for everyone. The cleanliness of the whole country, the security system....... everything is super super amazing. Luv from Pakistan
