    Great vid, well done for such great, patient work. I've looked these birds up as I am going to hopefully observe some this evening at a nature reserve.

    Marvelous video and the birds are a delight to watch also. :) The mutual grooming between the juveniles was very sweet!

      Esther it really is kind of you to post such positive feedback and I appreciate it so much. So happy to know that I was able to share the joy of seeing these lovely birds with somebody from (guessing here) somewhere other than the UK, possibly the other side of the world. I also love the way that the juveniles "cwtch" as they say here in Wales! 😊

      Funny you should say that because I DID use to be on the other side of the world. xD I grew up in China and I moved towards the end of last year to North Wales! As the wildlife was rather sparse where I used to be in China, being able to finally appreciate the wildlife here in Wales is an absolute godsend.

      +Esther Gao Esther, sorry so slow to reply, I was in London last weekend and then just forgot I hadn't responded.
      Isn't that amazing? North Wales! - I never suspected you were in the same country although the mountains in between do mean that North and South Wales have very distinct identities. Until just last year I had family in Gwynedd and also visited Clwyd as a kid so I do know the area a little. Hope you feel at home here now and glad to hear that you're enjoying the beautiful landscape and wildlife.

    Hi John, only just caught up with this wonderful clip; absolutely fantastic footage and sound, also full of facts and extra information. So nice to see all the youngsters too especially on the springy bridge ! I remember our visit well with Ann and Jeremy and then bumping into you for first time at Goldcliff !

      Hi Hazel, like you only just catching up. Thanks for your kindness, hope everything is going well. Got a bit despondent with the RSPB Newport Wetlands site as I was the only one posting so it wasn't really building a community. I wish the moderators had responded to complaints about the change of software as the current interface put a lot of the older folks off. They really need something as simple as Facebook to make it popular again.

    • @HAZY2525
      @HAZY2525 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's a shame the rspb site isn't more user friendly and supportive of efforts folk put in to the community; a lot of folk are put off by the poor software and agree they need to make it more user-friendly so more people will be encouraged to post and add to threads. Each year I come off the forum for two or three months as it is sometimes a hard slog and too much effort required for uploading ! I love your threads/vids John so keep adding when you feel like it :)

    • @johnluk
      @johnluk  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +HAZY2525 Thanks Hazel. I think it's OK if you're IT savvy like you or I, but as you say it's not helpful for some of the folks who don't generally post. A box for writing, a photo icon to add a photo and a video icon to link to a video - simples! .the problem is whereas the original software was custom made this interface is generic and dare I say it, cheaper? Hope you're keeping well, will definitely get back to posting on the RSPB - would hate to lose touch with you guys.

    • @HAZY2525
      @HAZY2525 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The biggest problem we've had is trying to get the mods (or rather tech support) to change the default for photo upload to "Enhanced" which displays photos full size instead of thumbnail size via current default setting; most of us have tried hard but in vain to get it changed as it always falls on deaf ears ! I agree, the generic software isn't brilliant :(
      I'll be back on the forum in a couple of weeks or so and look forward to catching up with you again. All good here and hope you are keeping well too John .

    • @johnluk
      @johnluk  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +HAZY2525 Thanks Hazel, I've got a dodgy foot at the moment, which hampers walking and causes backache as well; I can still manage a couple of miles, so not completely crocked and getting a bit of orthotic support soon which will help!

      Thank you, hope you do hear that ‘ping’ and manage to see some, they’re one of my favourite birds, such interesting behaviour. When you hear the ping wait and they will usually work their way up the reeds and call from the top before flying off.

    • @johnluk
      @johnluk  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Peter Annear Thank you Peter l, so happy you enjoyed it. It can be frustrating trying to find them. They only exist where the reed beds are extensive and of course this means they have acres in which to hide. I’m fortunate in that the Wetlands are only 20 minutes away so that pushes the probability of seeing one in my favour.

    I love the white-throated, otherwise orange-golden colouring of the adult female at 1:05 (I'm assuming, lacking the cried-out mascara-stain black markings the I've heard ironically id the male of the species). The either white or black "wing highlights" on them all are also pretty. A nicely designed bird, lol!

    • @johnluk
      @johnluk  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are certainly a lovely bird. I was quite surprised to see that the ‘moustache’ of the male was actually composed of separate feathers and not just a variation of colour in the plumage.
