  • This video shows multiple views of a Great Grey Shrike wintering on Crabtree Hill in the Forest of Dean with general information about the Shrike. The annotation is really aimed at people new to birding and the wider international audience.

    Great video - confirmed what the wee bird is we saw today. We were just 3m away from them. Amazing

      Ruth thanks, that is amazing! So lucky to get close views. They’re only a Winter visitor in our part of the world. . I’d be interested to know where you saw it!

    Imagine if the background to this was 'Shrike' by Hozier haha

      Well James I hadn’t heard of Hosier but thank you for bringing him to my attention, lovely music and lyrics. I’ve found You Tube are very quick to issue copywriter warnings about any use of music, even a soundtrack I’d produced by sequencing some Apple free to use tracks as a background to a video of butterflies, turns out they were sampled from a piece I’d never heard of .

    Brilliant video of the shrike! Fantastic captures! Saw one today at Leash Fen in Peak District, Derbyshire! Saw it through someone’s telescope, perched on top of a birch sapling!!

      Thank you Fiona, I wish I’d seen your Shrike! Such a striking bird. the one I filmed used to return regularly but we haven’t seen one in the Forest of Dean for a couple of years.

      Steve rc47 Thank YOU so much Steve, really kind of you to take the time to comment. The little creatures it's snacking on are actually lizards, which seem to be more common that newts here - although I've got to confess the Shrike is far more successful at spotting them than me!

      Thank you Debbie. I was really pleased with that camera, a Panasonic Lumix FZ82, which has a 60X zoom. I've changed cameras now to a Nikon P1000 that has a whopping 120X zoom. I loved the Lumix because it was light and yet very powerful, the Nikon is really heavy and bulky weighing about 3lbs but where i do most of my filming (Goldcliff) it is impossible to get close to the subjects and that extra zoom really helps!

    I can't believe theres a Shrike couple near my grandma's house.
    I thought there was a kitty outside then I seen this things fly from bush to bush, I think it was curious what I was holding. I captured it on my camera. These creatures like the cold weather here.

      Amazing! What a great spot. Where are you based? I haven't seen a G.G.Shrike for a couple of years now. They introduced cattle in the Forest of Dean where it regularly returned to to 'improve the habitat' a bit of 'rewilding' but it seems to have had the effect of driving the Shrike out.

      Well done Martin, what a stroke of luck, and good to hear you didn’t get close enough to disturb it. I’ve seen so many folks with huge lenses showing no fieldcraft and spooking birds.

    Hi could you tell we what type of bird is shown in the top right of the opening page please? Thank you!

    • @johnluk
      @johnluk  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Susie! It’s a Pied Flycatcher which I recorded from the Bruce Campbell hide in RSPB Nagshead, Forest of Dean. The full video is here: th-cam.com/video/5BW9C3lFp8Q/w-d-xo.html

      @@johnluk thank you so much for your reply! I'm trying to identify a bird I saw earlier today near Harrow. I think that rules out a Pied Flycatcher? It looked like a much smaller scruffy magpie. I took a photo but it isn't very helpful!

    • @johnluk
      @johnluk  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@susiew8695 You’re right in saying it can’t be a Pied Flycatcher at this time of the year. What about the Great Grey Shrike itself? although I don’t think you’d call it scruffy.

      I’m terribly sorry Marie-Claire, only 3 years late with a reply! For some reason your comment wasn’t flagged in the “comments you’ve not replied to” section and I hadn’t seen it. Yes it was Crabtree Hill, somewhere I’d love to return to once the lockdown is over. Apparently the Shrike was there this year too although I haven’t had the opportunity to see it!
