    In general I really enjoy the 2D sprites better than the 3D models. My favorite set of sprites are the gen 3 ones, so hopefully you'll get around to them as well!

    • @UmbreonLibris
      @UmbreonLibris  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The style of sprites from Gen 3 to gen 5 is fairly consistent so it will be a single video for all three, but I will definitely get there! Should be video #5 in the series though, so it will be a while.

    This was really interesting! I'd heard the term anti-aliasing before but never knew what it meant. And Wotter is adorable!

    • @UmbreonLibris
      @UmbreonLibris  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just to be clear, anti-aliasing in other contexts is usually much more extensive that what you can accomplish manually in pixel art, but the principle is the same :)

    adorable pokemon! it's always nice seeing these techniques being put into such an easy way to understand, it's very accessible. for the name, i suggest "trixea", like 'trick' and 'sea' since it likes to prank people, and it is a water type, and it kinda sounds like an already existing name (trixie), so it kind of rolls off the tongue.

    • @UmbreonLibris

    I usually draw my pixel art in either MSPaint or the in-engine sprite editor for the game development software I'm using at the time.
    And visually I like _MAXIMUM ALIASING_ rather than anti-aliasing unless I'm trying to emulate a specific style.
    And this reminds me, I've got a monster collection game design idea I've been mulling over where the starter is based on a kamaitachi and can advance into one of four forms based on the game's four elements (Dragon, Water, Fairy, and Steel - yes, it's literally just the four strongest elements from Pokemon plus a normal/neutral type); the water type being an otter with a body literally made of liquid water, so its appearance would naturally be transparent and bluish.
    I have another, unrelated, game design for a monster collecting game where literally every species is a fox. From the green and needly Vul-Pine to the uncomfortably feminine and humanoid Vixoman to the desert-dwelling fennec thief Zandito. Basically, a shitpost to anyone who complains about Pokemon having too many foxes (which includes myself, I love foxes and always want more foxes but at the same time I kinda wish Pokemon would stop introducing so many new foxes and focus more on less-represented flora and fauna).

    I thought of the name 'uischú' (pronounced ishcue) that is basically the fusion of the Irish words 'uisce' meaning water, and 'dobharchú' which is one of the ways to say otter (the other version of otter is 'madra uisce' which literally just means water dog lol)

    So it's called dithering, huh? I always called it cross-hatching, like in traditional paper art.

    • @UmbreonLibris
      @UmbreonLibris  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You know, I never made the connection that dithering is the pixel art equivalent of cross-hatching! But I'd guess there's a good chance that's where the idea came from. The term dithering does come from the world of computing, though.
