Looks like you're getting much better performance. I think the number I've gone for with all of the kits I've put together is inch and 3/4. It lets the flame come together more as a point where it contacts the pan, then blooms across the bottom. Regardless, now your kit is much more versatile!
Glad you tried it with the fan guard. I found some tins that just fit in the stove on Amazon a while back and have been using Sterno firestarter gel in mine. Boil times are about equal.
I took out the tray and use a home made soda can alcohol burner. Seems to work ok but now I want to try the fan guard as see if it speeds up boiling time for my setup. I live at 3200 ft. water boils at 206 degrees F. One other footnote: removing the fuel cube tray allows you more room for twigs if needed as a wood stove. Thank you sir for your videos, we have parallel interests!
the esbit stove here is aluminium, so wouldn't recommend it for twigs, but.... boundless voyage do a very similar version in titanium... which does work fine as a twig stove.
could you rerun the test outside to asses the affect of the wind as I am wondering if, when using the pc grille the wind would take away the heat?? Just a counter point to consider, great video thanks for doing the test
I'm sure any wind would degrade performance. I always use a wind screen, I have since I first used my Bleuet S200 gas stove outdoors (50+ years ago). There was only a light wind but it took forever to heat my water, after that I started using aluminum foil wind screen for all of my different stoves. A wind screen even with no wind will help performance by corralling the heat, especially in cold temperatures..
I was thinking the same thing. Could be the grate is what is making most of the difference. If so there might be no reason to modify the stove by cutting the solid fuel tray loose.

i did this a while back, i don't like or use solid fuel, but liked this stove.... i made a bespoke fancyfeast stove for mine, works great !

The fan guard really improved my times, I keeping it with the kit.

I have the same setup but left the tray intact and it works fine.

How about putting the tray back in and using the grate?

I'll give it a try.
OK, I just published a video test the stove with the fuel tray and great.

What precise size is your fan grill?? I want to replicate your setup. On Ebay I see 120 mm all the way up to 180 and beyond... Thanks
I'm using the 90mm ( 3.5 inch ) fan guard.
You can also find them on Amazon,
Thank you!! Happy new year!!
Not that it matters, but I think I'm first to comment. I'm just helping the algorithm
Thanks, 🙂
