Solo Stove Lite Review // Lightest Stove With Unlimited Fuel

  • In this Solo Stove Lite review I’ll be simply using it and sharing my thoughts along the way. I’m also going to be combining the Solo Stove Lite and 900 ml pot which pair very nicely together. My initial impression is that this tiny little stove can get meals and hot drinks done well for one or two people, if they aren’t in a hurry. Also included as a bonus at the end of the video is a short Solo Stove Lite Alcohol Burner test and overview.

      What kind of alcohol ? Rubbing alcohol? Or liquor ? I have two of these but have never tried them . I thought dryer lint was only for fire places . So maybe I should start saving dryer lint? Is the special fire starter fuel for this solo stove? Can you use fire start small little log for this solo stove ? Thanks

    I'm tempted by the solo stove lite. I have the Ohuhu, and I have used it for a few years now. It is a great little packing stove, but I can see that this one is a better design (at three times the price). My main complaint about the Ohuhu is coming in so many pieces and weight, at nearly 2 pounds. Don't get me wrong. I really love it. It is the first stove I got that is the wood gasification type, and given I live on the Appalachian trail, there are strict rules about what you can use. Technically the Ohuhu (and the solo) don't qualify, but I've run into several rangers / DNR and have yet to have an issue. I simply tell them the truth. It is a twig stove, I am not building a campfire, and it is more environmentally friendly than any white gas, propane, or other fuel burning stove.
    Have also used the Ohuhu just outside of Pray Montana in February, in brutal conditions, and it works just fine. Great for using deadfall, and even small green sticks from pines. The Ohuhu seems to be less vulnerable to wind than this Solo, but it is also more of a pain to reload with fuel.
    But the more I camp, and the further I go, the more that weight begins to bother me. So this solo stove looks really good to me.
    Will look for one on sale.

    This is a great instructional video, you moved right along quickly with the details & didn't waste any time. The info is good confirmation & I don't mind at all feeding the fire. It looks so simple, resembles some home-made tin-can stoves, but more durable. If one is concerned with fumes (due to breathing problems), you might need to use a more natural starter, like dry grass, etc... Thanks again! Keep up the good work!

    Great video but you should keep your wood below the upper holes on the stove for the most efficient burn. It will also leave less of a char on the pot and you won’t need nearly as much wood.

    I have that stove (the Lite) and its larger brother Titan. Love them both! I carry a extra small dry bag of hickory chunks and they work great if the local bio fuels are wet. Both sizes are perfect for both ultra lite cookware and cast iron cookware !! ❤️ that aspect since most stoves are used for one or the other types of cookware. Using cast iron on them makes for a "crazy good" steak dinner👍.

    Try sarting it with thicker sticks in the bottom and small twigs on top (an upside down fire). It sounds wrong but it works. It will soon gasify and become smokeless and you won't have to continually feed it to get your cup of water boiled.

      And see, that defeats the entire purpose and marketing campaign behind the “backpack.camp.survive” theme. In a real world survival scenario, you won’t have a fire starter. Being able to create a fire in the stove it crucial. Something this stove doesn’t allow for very well.

    I've had the Solo Stove Lite for a lot of years and really like it. I made it lighter by switching out the pot that comes with it for a Snow Peak Titanium 900 ml one. The last 4 years or in that area I got a Firebox Nano Gen 2 Titanium stove, It's a lot lighter and I can use longer sticks in it. I can even fit it ( folded ) in my Maxi Titanium Canteen cup. The Nano , it's X box , stuff sack and a Evernew titanium alcohol burner are stored in the cup.

    I was recently “gifted” one of these as a 5 yrs of service from a company. I assembled the stove, filled a cut up soda can with 70% isopropyl alcohol, filled the pot with with about 10oz of water. From initial light to full rolling boil I’m averaging 3min. Unfortunately even the isopropyl burns incredibly dirty. It’s a surprisingly efficient little stove, but it’s efficiency is also a bit of a weak point. Alcohol you can eat and forget, wood or wood pellets would definitely require a lot of babysitting. The only way you could start a boil while you set up camp is with alcohol. Clocked 2 tablespoons of alcohol at a pretty consistent 10 minutes.

    • @MyLegitReviews
      @MyLegitReviews  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd have to agree with you about boiling water while you set camp. When using wood this stove requires constant attention.

    Own a "sierra zip stove" that is over 25 years old now. It has a AA battery powered fan underneath that quickly turns the fuel into a blacksmiths forge. The battery lasts about 6 hours worth of cooking but this solo stoves design works very well without a fan. For car camping try putting in longer burning 100% mesquite charcoal chunks after you get it going. Put a little grate on top & its an effective bbq as well 😋

    • @MyLegitReviews
      @MyLegitReviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This sound amazing. Tiny BBQ. I wonder if this method, properly controlled, could be used for smoking things. You've got me thinking. Also, someone else had asked if charcoal would work in this stove and I didn't know. I hope they find your comment.

    If you want a lite dual fuel set up, I use the solo lite with a toaks titanium alcohol stove (0.7ozs), toaks1100ml titanium pot and a set of titanium cross bars. The Lite serves as a stand and windscreen for the alcohol burner (I boiled 16ozs of water in 7 minutes with that configuration) or you can use them both simultaneously with the cross bars on the alcohol stove and a wood fire in the Lite. A couple of other pros, great for cooking food on a stick over it...smokeless once you get it going (you forget how big a deal this is until you try something else and have smoke in your face)...extremely easy to start a fire in it...could also be used as a fire starting tool to get some hot coals going in less than ideal circumstances to use to start a bigger campfire. I have the Lite, Titan and the Campfire and LOVE all three! They usually have a pretty good sale before Christmas.

    The only way to avoid any kind of "carbon footprint" with a backpacking stove is not to use a backpacking stove, and drink cold water and eat sushi and raw vegetables. No problem if that's your thing, but most of us don't. So I don't sweat the minor bit of "pollution" you mentioned concerning the compressed gas fuel as opposed to what you're emitting from the Solo Stove. I love the Solo Stove too. Good video.

    • @MyLegitReviews
      @MyLegitReviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, good points. I think I may have miscommunicated my intent about pollution. It was about the disposable (recyclable) fuel canisters. The burning the fuel would be a negligible difference IMO.

    I WAS, tempted to get one of these, (May still, for the no-smoke thing) YET A wood stove like Emberlit (I have a DIY one) Once fire is started,... you can use a stick that is an inch + thick and 3 feet long, (never have use longer than 8 to 12 inches, just making a point) and slowly feed it in as it burns down. rather than, NEEDING to break down tiny pieces.

    • @MyLegitReviews

      I think it would work fine so long as the handle of the frypan was not going to imbalance it. I suppose that applies to any small stove, though. Not that you would take a cast iron pan backpacking, but the weight balance of that would probably keep it steady.

    We should also be able to use charcoal pieces with these things?

    • @MyLegitReviews
      @MyLegitReviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question. I want to both say yes and no. The idea is the gasification of the fuel and the flow of fresh air. So, would charcoal (assuming you mean BBQ briquettes) act the same? I don't know but it would be a fun experiment.

    The Solo stove and 900 ml pot bundle is now $140 at Amazon. I bought mine separately a couple of years ago for $70 + $35. I wish I'd bought the Toaks titanium stove and their 750ml titanium pot for almost half the price and almost half the weight of the Solo. 😣
    The Solo is well made and heavy duty, and 900ml is more than 750ml, but usually titanium is twice the price of stainless, not half the price of stainless.
    If I wanted ultralight, at least in warmer weather, I'd carry the soda can alcohol stove I made, which is 0.3 punces, and FREE.

      @@MyLegitReviews I've made 2 DYI gasifiers which work very well but are heavy for the size. Finding quality stainless with thin walls is fairly expensive. A friend sent me a stove made by Ohuhu which works VERY well . $25 from Amazon. I have seen large gasifier stoves in Bangladesh and Indonesia which are fueled by waste rice husk. They work very well for water purification, desalinization and some are used for steam engines.

      Stereo in a can sounds awesome! "Just spray it, then play it!" "Pour it, then score it!" "Glug it, then dub it!" "Shake it up, then shake it up! Yeah!" I'm guessing you meant "Sterno" and got autocorrected. I don't know the answer, though.

    If you want to keep the soot from forming on your Cups & Pots , place a clean ( no paint ) metal lid from a 1 Quart Paint Can on top of your wood stove , and then place your Pot on top . -- Vary the size of your lids for the size of your wood burner .

    How hard to clean?

    • @MyLegitReviews
      @MyLegitReviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not hard. When I let it burn properly it cleans itself. There is almost no ash left after it burns itself out so for a wood fired item it is very clean.

      Thanks! This is funny about the pollution. My thoughts (though I clearly didn't communicate them well) are just about the single use compressed gas cans. Even though they are recyclable I just like the simplicity of burning sticks without generating any trash or recycling. Sorry I put you off with my ill-stated thoughts, though. I'll do better next time.
