Sony Xperia XZ Premium: 960fps slow-motion camera in-depth look

- As we've seen from your comments, many of you guys are excited for Sony's next flagship, the Sony Xperia XZ Premium.
One feature in particular has grabbed much of the attention, Sony's super 960fps slow-motion camera. Being able to shoot at 960 frames per second is pretty much unheard of on a smartphone, and is still a relatively neat trick in the world of point and shoot, and the video we were able to capture looked better than we’ve seen from any smartphone.
There are some caveats though: it’s only 720p, rather noisy if you’re in any kind of low light, and the camera is fairly zoomed in, so you’ll only really be able to capture long shots.

peace gamer yes, a bit of a disappointment I have to say , won't be buying a second one , which is a shame because being a Sony brand we expected more .
can you imagine having a tv with a volume control that is so slow to react it takes 16 seconds to go from full volume to zero volume ? not that you would have it at full volume , but if you have one of those movies that has a lot of volume fluctuation and your trying to keep it at the happy medium so you don't wake the family , at times if I vary the volume on occasion it will crash and have to fully restart the telly (happens way too often),
if you mute a loud bit of the movie , unlike some other brands , when it's in muted mode you can't re adjust the volume downwards to lower level then hit the up volume and enjoy your movie , instead if you mute the device you must un mute the dam thing before you can lower the volume .
I hope the Sony phones are a bit better than their TVs..

Just can't stop loving the XZ premium, the 960fps slow mo is an incredible feature, that phone is damn good overall

Having bought this XZ Premium accidentally, the whole offer is amazing. Great Phone, good software, Android Pie, bomb of a processor, camera with 30 sq mm sensor, great night shoot, stabilized sensor, and this 960 frames per second !!!

Coming from three generations of phones from google, Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 5 and my favorite the Nexus 6, I was concerned that I wouldn't or couldn't like any other phone. After settling on the XA Ultra for the nice 6" screen, it wasn't so bad. Definitely a great value. The quality of the camera on the XZ Premium is something that peaks my interests. I have recently moved from Canon cameras to Sony and the high frame rate in the video capture is a must have.This feature in a phone, even if it my seem like a gimmick, is something I want. I just wish it had a 6" screen. I will most likely get the XA1 Ultra when it is released in the States. I have always liked Sony's design language in phones, they might not be the best or highly rated by reviewers here in the US but I do not regret getting the XA Ultra

I already have the z5 compact, but it has its flaws (especially software).
What could sony do with their slow motion on tap mode is to be able to record more slow motion footage while holding the slow-mo button (instead of 0,2s you could up to 6s or whatever the memory is capable of)
It's Me 960 fps for 6 seconds = 5760 frames, played at 30 fps = 3 min of slow boring footage
Well, your trying to catch something and not dead on sure when some certain thing is going to happen, you need to cover it with 6 seconds then EDIT what is interesting.

I think sony is allways one of the best brands in whatever they do (on top high end products, the middle market products from sony are not that great), and to say that the super slow mode is the only thing that will make one buy a sony phone is in my opinon a very wrong statment. the sony xzp is for all it is, again in my opinion the best Smart phone one can buy. of course it will allways depend on personal taste for design and brand, but no one can denie that this phone is just simply outstanding and incredible.

You may be able to make a quick shortcut to the dedicated slow motion mode if you use Nova Launcher.
Add new Widget > Nova Launcher Activities and look through the list. I don't own the phone, but I use Nova Launcher and you can make lots of easy shortcuts like this.
Promo looks amazing, but 3 things to mention:
I had my Z3 and it was announced waterproof... it wasn't, at least the first time i tried it in water it got wet, all covers were sealed and service got it replaced because no signs of inappropriate use.
Second, .... the glass broke on the back side of the phone within the cover, without dropping it. Heat difference I guess...
Third.. upgrades. Sony quit supporting the phone not long after buying it. This was my second phone after Xperia Arc S...
I would really think it through to buy Sony again according to my concerns, but the time i spent with these phones were really amazing.
I already had a hands on... Feels great (better than their previous phones) and the camera footage is amazig!
Super innovative indeed usually the image processing on phones is the biggest limiting factor but this is a marvel in both quality of hardware and software and its a huge step in blurring the line between phone and dedicated camera!
This feature will be ideal for golfers wanting to film their swings.

Superb Slow motion..But if its capable to record slow mo on 1080 then it would me more better. i hope next year Sony do it
they need even more powerful processor to do that. Camera isn't the problem, it's the processor. Pretty sure this'll get done by the next year's time.

Johnny Pigman sorry man I have the xzs you can't hammer onto the slow mo button. There's about 1-2 seconds gap between each take so yeah but you could do that but there's a risk of missing some shots.... Slow motion is incredible just tricky to use

960/720 is incredible. Definitely a feature that would say my buying decision along with a 2nd wide angle camera.

Do hope other vendors go down that path and +960fps and above, instead of all those other gimmickly features there is a usefull and informative as putting your tongue out the window..

Aníbal Évora Hi I wasn't able to confirm this information, but was disappointed that XZ Premium doesn't film in 4K @ 60fps even with SD835 chipset like Samsung Galaxy S8+. Other than that all else is pretty good, but would have liked 6GB or 8GB RAM.
Hi..! Well, I think you are misinformed about the recording capabilities of the S8, since it does not record in 4k@60fps.. Not even dedicated pro consumer cameras are capable of that in their majority (only the Panasonic gh5, from what I know about.. I could be wrong on this 😅).. So I guess there are no features missing in the XZp apart from the now trendy longer screen and minimal bezels 😉
the most underrated phone, no flagship phone will ever compare with the camera of this phone unless sony brings out a new flagship phone

Sonys camera game is always spot on, plus good build and innovation. The only thing that keeps me from buying it is its ui, and i am a sucker for amoled screen.

It will probably be a bit of novelty fun the first half a dozen times the average person uses it , after that it will probably be like most gimmicky features , it will hardly be used and largely forgotten .

So if I'm not understand correctly, you can only shoot 6secs of slow motion at a time? How long do you have to wait before you can do another 6 secs?
why not recording the video to the ram and then if you click the button it saves the last 20 seconds or so?
right now it sure looks a bit grainy but thy'll work their way up to making this 960 fps @1080p, maybe in 2 to 3 phone generations, so I'm not really concerned about it, specially since I don't have enough money to buy one of this RN, I just have a XPeria XA Ultra

had a z5 premium for a year then bought this bad boy for its camera actions plus the great thing about xz premium compared to z5 premium is it can take 4k videos for ages without overheating my z5 premium got that hot at times I had to put it down even watching videos or playing games but this xz premium is awesome no overheating issues at all and I'm on it constantly watching videos n films and for the slow motion camera took me a couple of hours in the park with my dog to get used to it and get some Gr8 shots, don't no why everyone doesn't have a Sony phone, iPhone crap, Samsung crap, LG crap, the list goes on, I've always used Sony from its erricson days and always will 👊
Got it love it. Phone is fast, powerful enough to video edit on. 4k ability and 960 frames a second. No Brainer. And you can make calls. My Nikon is still a better camera but the two together make great companions. I am trying to get it to connect to a card reader.
I hope it offers different option like 240fps and 480fps, similar to Sony's RX 100 IV/V camera.
