Rusty Saw Restoration

  • When restoring the old rusty saw, I had to make the wooden handle new, because there was nothing left of the old one. Also, when restoring the antique saw, I removed rust from parts by sandblasting, nickel plated individual parts, made a new handle from oak, used lacquer spray and much more. Please also note that this video is not only to quickly show someone how something works, but also to relax and escape from everyday life!
    ------------------------------------------------------------
    ▶ What did I do ?! ◀
    The rusty saw was still in acceptable condition, so restoration here would not be much of a problem. After unscrewing the saw blade, I milled off the bolts with the multifunction tool and knocked them out with a pin punch. I recut the threads on the bolts and nuts. Using files and sandpaper, I finished the surfaces and then polished them to make them shine nicely again. I nickel plated these parts to prevent them from rusting. I remade the wooden handle from oak, using the bandsaw, belt sander, and various other tools. After gluing the wood pieces together, I fitted them to the old hacksaw. I derusted the hacksaw itself by sandblasting and then treated it with spray paint. Now it was just a matter of gluing the wooden handle to the saw, mounting the saw blade and putting everything together.
    ------------------------------------------------------------
    ▶ Good to know ◀
    I used the following tools: Rust remover, screwdriver, pliers, multifunctional tool, tweezers, pin punch, hammer, tap, lathe, file, sandpaper, wire brush, countersink, polishing paste, polishing bench, nickel electrolyte, laboratory power supply, nickel, pencil, ruler, band saw, belt sander, cordless screwdriver, drill, wood glue, glue, spatula, clamp, saw, corundum, sandblasting cabin, cold bluing, spray paint, adhesive tape, cotton swabs, isopropanol, linseed oil varnish, center punch

    Audio is once again one of the highlights of your work, but the video too deserves some love, especially the capture of those beautiful sanding shot, watching the wood slowly take shape.
    Probably one of my new favorite videos of yours, very nicely done. Give my regards to her Majesty as well. ^_^

    I like this video, but there were a couple things that confused me - why didnt you remove the rust from everything first? It looked like a lot of dirt/rust residue got on your threading tool? And why nickel plate some parts but blue others? And also, I dont think we saw the saw itself get restored?

    Another job well done!
    I've always wondered- I notice in many restorer's projects if they have to paint something it's usually only black or red, with less common orange or even less often green. I've seen blue maybe once or twice. Is there a reason more fun colours like purple isn't used? Like is it a harder paint/coating colour to find or is it just that red and black common colour choices/default?

    • @ForgottenShineRestoration
      @ForgottenShineRestoration  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That's a really good question! The items were probably always in those "standard" colors at the time they came from. I'll start a poll there to see if that engages multiple viewers. Thanks for the tip!🐢
