I had the honor of teaching at University of Dhaka and I believe my students are compassionate and resourceful enough to face this complicated situation. I am from Bangladesh and i was born in a city called Jessore but currently studying in Dhaka. To me the problem is not in this city ..the problem is the others..thousands of people like me come to Dhaka every year for what? opportunities.Other cities don't have much opportunities as Dhaka has.For example , Universities... most of the famous and decent universities are in Dhaka. As a result thousands of students like myself come to study in Dhaka. If Dhaka is known as the 4rth* worst city to live in, then the reason behind is that this city is our soul, our source of success. and It has room for all kinds of people. Now that being said, we need to developed other cities as well..so we don't have to leave our home towns in search for education and jobs. Lots of love from people of Bangladesh. Cheers!

I'm Dutch, and I've been to Bangladesh, but the water problems they face there are 100x bigger than those of Holland, plus the Netherlands used an enormous amount of its gas money to build it. Even with the Dutch knowledge that we developed over centuries it will not be enough.

I m Bangladeshi. So I know my country best. Trust me, over population is not religious matter. It is for the lack of education. Let me to explain the thoughts of our people. A rickshaw man thinks that if I have 10 boys when they will grow up they will also become rickshaw man. N if they earn 1000tk in month, my 10 boys will altogether will earn 10000 tk. But they don't think that he have to feed them, take care of them even also there is no guaranty that he will have 10 boys but girls. Even when his boys will grow up they will also have their own families. N in our family we r three sisters. My parants wanted a boy that's why they give birth of three girls for a boy. They think us burden. That's how it is. Religious doesn't matter.
Agree with you but the situations are changing rapidly. Bangladesh is doing very well in controlling population growth. But you have to realize population will still grow. Maybe at a slower rate but it will grow. We have very fertile land. That's why so many people lived in our lands for thousands of years. You know why Canada has such low population? Because their country was not in a good living state for humans. You are absolutely right, proper education is the key! I believe the education in Bangladesh is still very primitive, especially in primary and secondary level. I like your calculation, it's basic yet superbly effective.
Those who are screaming to ban Islam, Bangladesh isn't an Islamic country rather it's a secular nation and it wasn't ruled by any extreme Islamist in the last few decades. And those who are claiming that 2-child policy would solve the problems in the country should know Singapore has 7 times denser population than Bangladesh has, yet they are one of the richest nations in the world. Look at Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Malaysia... where Islam is practiced more than it is practiced in Bangladesh but Islam didn't stop them to grow up their economy. The problem of our country is the corrupt politicians but it seems most of the people blaming some illogical things are ignorant that they even didn't mention about our corrupt politicians.
Plan to solve the problems in Dhaka and in Bangladesh as a whole: 1. Develop infrastructure: Dhaka needs stoplights, modern roads, taxis, food safety standards, flyovers, parking garages, and better public transportation. A more developed public bus service and a metro train system should be established in Dhaka. Modern roads and freeways should be built throughout Bangladesh, so that transportation around the country is much easier. As for global warming, the government could help to reduce pollution by enacting new environmentally-friendly laws and regulations. Land reclamation can be used to reclaim land lost as a result of rising sea levels. 2. Expand housing development: Dhaka really needs satellite cities. With the ever-growing population, Dhaka needs to expand outwards. I would suggest focusing on building high-rise developments, since Bangladesh is a very dense country. New satellite cities should be planned for the Dhaka area, and foreign investment in housing and real estate should be encouraged. Many Chinese companies would be more than happy to invest in developing new satellite cities in Dhaka, since they are always looking for new countries to invest in. This housing boom on top of the new infrastructure projects would create a ton of new jobs, allowing many of the people coming to Dhaka from the countryside to find sustainable, worthwhile, and better paying jobs. The expansion of housing development and the improvements in infrastructure would also greatly reduce traffic and overcrowding. 3. Attract foreign capital to Dhaka: Many cities in Southeast Asia are currently experiencing economic booms. Multinational corporations are flocking to these places left and right to spend their money on new projects or set up regional headquarters. Bangladesh is trying to get into the information technology, software, and pharmaceutical industries, so why not attract multinational corporations in these industries to set up regional branches or headquarters in Dhaka? This will allow billions of dollars to flow into the Bangladeshi economy and lead to the construction of skyscrapers and modern architecture, which will help to beautify the city. Bangladesh should continue to expand its manufacturing industry, although better working conditions will be needed to keep this industry running properly. 4. Liberalize socially and improve the lifestyle: Although it is more liberal than most other predominantly Muslim countries, Bangladesh is still overall a very conservative country. Although sharia law isn't implemented on the national level, it still very much influences the culture of Bangladesh, and there have been some recent incidents of Islamization in Bangladesh. This is highly detrimental to Bangladesh's economy as well as its potential to become a new hotspot of investment and trade. People like to have fun, and life isn't fun when you're constantly held back by oppressive laws and norms. Look at Saudi Arabia for example. Sure, it's a very wealthy country, but there is no religious freedom at all and clubs and nightlife are completely banned as a result of the country's strict interpretation of Islamic law. Non-Muslims such as myself are not even allowed to tour the famous mosques in Mecca and Medina, so really, what is there for tourists to do in Saudi Arabia? The Saudi economy is solely based on oil. The UAE on the other hand has liberalized and although it still has sharia law, it's to a much less extent than Saudi Arabia, and the UAE has been able to become one of the most visited countries in the world as a result. Bangladesh should follow suit and protect the rights of religious minorities as well as women, and hopefully the LGBT community can be protected eventually as well. Better shopping malls, grocery stores, apartments, parks, recreation centers, movie theaters, clubs, and concert venues should be built. Bangladesh also has a booming sex industry, which if regulated can be a major money making industry. I personally believe that Dhaka could benefit from having a big sex industry since it doesn't have the major tourist attractions or cultural heritage sites that draw thousands of foreigners to other cities across Asia each year. Besides, Bangladeshi women are beautiful, and I'm sure many foreigners would pay good money to have sex with a Bangladeshi girl or find a Bangladeshi girlfriend or wife. If the government cracks down on underage prostitution and human trafficking and regulates brothels and sexual services, the sex industry could end up playing a major role in the Bangladeshi economy. Sex tourism is sleazy, but it also makes a lot of money, and could help Bangladesh to stand out. The establishment of strip clubs could also help this industry prosper. Cox's Bazar, the gem of Bangladesh, should be transformed into a major resort town with posh hotels, restaurants, bars, and clubs. 5. Uphold the rule of law: This is a major issue in Bangladesh. Human rights and the rule of law are not widely respected. The government is very corrupt, women are treated as second-class citizens, and religious minorities face widespread persecution which is tantamount to genocide. Although the country is officially secular, there is still a widespread tolerance for Islamic extremism. Women who reject marriage proposals and sexual advances are frequently disfigured with acid. Bangladesh has the most number of acid attacks in the world per capita. Also, Islamic fundamentalist groups such as ISIS and Al-Qaeda have been committing terrorist attacks in Bangladesh in recent years. This all needs to change if Bangladesh is to globalize. The government should crack down on corruption, prevent abuses of human rights, end the culture of impunity, and use their resources to fight terrorism. Security should be improved, and open displays of Islamic extremism and political fanaticism should also be banned. Human rights and the rule of law must always be respected and upheld. 5. Create a skilled workforce: One of the main reasons for Bangladesh's poverty is the severe lack of education in the country. Many kids live on the streets and beg rather than go to school, or quit school early to go to work. This is an issue, as it continues the cycle of poverty in Bangladesh. The government should see to it that every child remains in school until they finish high school. Higher education should be more widely encouraged and accessible. These improvements will lead to a more skilled and educated workforce, which will in turn raise living standards. This is my five points for prosperity plan. To me, ideology is irrelevant, the only thing that matters is results. All of this CAN be done, it just takes the right governance.

Dhaka, and Bangladesh in general, show great promise in becoming major players in the South Asian region. However, I think if they work on two fronts in particular, their path to prosperity can really pull through. Those two fronts are: infrastructure and mobilization of the Bangladeshis. In terms of infrastructure, Bangladesh needs to find ways to ensure future stability in the face of climate change while developing in environmentally sustainable ways. There's opportunity in Bangladesh, because it has so much of what is a very precious resource: water. So, flood protection, flood gates, and rainwater harvesting systems-like those being developed in Germany-as well as waterproof architectural infrastructure and high capacity sewage/water rehabilitation networks, are projects that Bangladesh can work on. Furthermore, it ought to work on roads and internal transport networks, _while also_ ensuring that these are sustainable against floods. Within Dhaka, public transportation projects are a good way to relieve congestion and introduce clean energy in an effective way that people will make use of. Vegetation is also a very important way of conserving water and preventing runoff, and it helps for beautification and tackling pollution. In architecture, developing structures that can take heavy rainfall without eroding, and that can maybe even capture high amounts of it are the way to go. Furthermore, encourage local growth and consolidation of nearby urban areas to form new cities and towns to relieve population pressure from Dhaka. Once an infrastructural threshold has been established, even the poorest of Bangladesh will have at least systems in place that give them a base quality of life; even something as simple as a pump that filters water, and a windmill that provides electricity in every village can drastically improve quality of life. If Bangladesh can learn to harness its greatest challenge-water-that challenge may just become Bangladesh's greatest asset, especially as water becomes more and more of an issue globally; water can be Bangladesh's oil. As for the people, Bangladesh needs to orientate them and provide them the means to achieve national success. Obviously, the infrastructural changes will help them, but it's not enough. A mass literacy program, especially adult literacy and early childhood education, ought to be the aim-get everyone under the age of 60 to be able to read in the national language. This helps to make communication easier across the country, helps to increase the mobility of the population, makes civil engagement and general societal engagement easier, and reinforces a sense of national belonging. This can become easier with better infrastructure, as it makes it easier for people to move around, and thus easier for instructors and tutors to reach rural communities. As more become literate, it only becomes easier to go up from there. Institute health and civic order campaigns-methods of mundane governance-to regularize people's actions, such as how and where to dispose of trash and which kind, how to treat water, how to maintain infrastructure, how to prevent diseases, how to fix broken water pumps, etc. At the same time, develop these facilities-recycling, water treatment/natural gas systems to provide boiling capacities to houses, sanitary facilities, and a healthcare system that can provide necessary vaccinations-to make the transition from a primarily rural society to a primarily urban and developed society even faster. Campaigns to reduce the birth rate have been very successful in Bangladesh, so a mass mobilization of the Bangladeshi people _can_ be done. If possible, once a basic near-universal literacy has been reached, start vamping up education in general; reform and revitalize elementary schools, high schools, and universities if necessary. Perhaps even put a focus on growing engineering to produce the minds that will create these changes. A lot of social issues can be solved just with education, but education is affected by a variety of issues. The problem is that these cannot be treated in isolation; in order to effectively tackle these issues, they must be understood as an interrelated nexus and taken on at once. They cannot be treated one at a time, but in tandem. And of course this assumes that the government always acts benevolently, and it doesn't. But the path to prosperity _is_ within reach; Bangladesh _can_ thrive, it just has to play its cards _very_ smartly.

Never been to Bangladesh myself but I think in order to take on the huge challenges, they need to take the following measures: First, the city (and state) need to reorganize themselves soon so that there is 1 government that efficiently can implement the necessary changes. Whether this will be democratic or not, is not the most pressing concern since time (climate change) is not on their side. Secondly, for the rising sea levels, they can look at the Dutch system and try to implement the most cost efficient measures and try to combat these issues. But since they have such limited funds this is an utopian dream I fear. Thirdly, they could try to diversify their economy. Instead of being the clothing manufacturer of the world, maybe government could think more long term (as I presume cloth manufacturing is an industry that will be robotized soon) Can't wait to see the next city profiles, great job!

Dhaka does need to have a proper municipal government, yes. It also needs Land Value Tax. It needs investment in infrastructure. Any surpluses should be distributed as a Citizen's Dividend to pre-empt them from being used for patrimonial/nepotistic/rentier purposes. Licensing would be a step backwards. The economy does not need more barriers to entry.

My first thought, given the flooding and sanitation needs, is that each citizen and immigrant needs to learn a few things about building up wastewater and aqueduct infrastructure, so when the need arises to organize a project, the necessary labor is readily available. Sure, electricity is important as well, but it's a lower priority. You can't very well provide a neighborhood with electricity when that neighborhood is flooded.

If you are ready to go inhuman, then decreasing the gross lifespan is an option as well. Needs to overhaul the entire study system so that young people can join the workforce earlier then they can now(and be more efficient as well).... and probably, export population on a bigger scale(as workforce mainly).

I am from Bangladesh and i was born in a city called Jessore but currently studying in Dhaka. To me the problem is not in this city ..the problem is the others..thousands of people like me come to Dhaka every year for what? opportunities.Other cities don't have much opportunities as Dhaka has.For example , Universities... most of the famous and decent universities are in Dhaka. As a result thousands of students like myself come to study in Dhaka. If Dhaka is known as the 4rth* worst city to live in, then the reason behind is that this city is our soul, our source of success. and It has room for all kinds of people.
Now that being said, we need to developed other cities as well..so we don't have to leave our home towns in search for education and jobs.

I'm Dutch, and I've been to Bangladesh, but the water problems they face there are 100x bigger than those of Holland, plus the Netherlands used an enormous amount of its gas money to build it. Even with the Dutch knowledge that we developed over centuries it will not be enough.

I m Bangladeshi. So I know my country best. Trust me, over population is not religious matter. It is for the lack of education. Let me to explain the thoughts of our people. A rickshaw man thinks that if I have 10 boys when they will grow up they will also become rickshaw man. N if they earn 1000tk in month, my 10 boys will altogether will earn 10000 tk. But they don't think that he have to feed them, take care of them even also there is no guaranty that he will have 10 boys but girls. Even when his boys will grow up they will also have their own families. N in our family we r three sisters. My parants wanted a boy that's why they give birth of three girls for a boy. They think us burden. That's how it is. Religious doesn't matter.

You are absolutely right, proper education is the key! I believe the education in Bangladesh is still very primitive, especially in primary and secondary level. I like your calculation, it's basic yet superbly effective.
Those who are screaming to ban Islam, Bangladesh isn't an Islamic country rather it's a secular nation and it wasn't ruled by any extreme Islamist in the last few decades. And those who are claiming that 2-child policy would solve the problems in the country should know Singapore has 7 times denser population than Bangladesh has, yet they are one of the richest nations in the world.

Plan to solve the problems in Dhaka and in Bangladesh as a whole:
1. Develop infrastructure: Dhaka needs stoplights, modern roads, taxis, food safety standards, flyovers, parking garages, and better public transportation. A more developed public bus service and a metro train system should be established in Dhaka. Modern roads and freeways should be built throughout Bangladesh, so that transportation around the country is much easier. As for global warming, the government could help to reduce pollution by enacting new environmentally-friendly laws and regulations. Land reclamation can be used to reclaim land lost as a result of rising sea levels.
2. Expand housing development: Dhaka really needs satellite cities. With the ever-growing population, Dhaka needs to expand outwards. I would suggest focusing on building high-rise developments, since Bangladesh is a very dense country. New satellite cities should be planned for the Dhaka area, and foreign investment in housing and real estate should be encouraged. Many Chinese companies would be more than happy to invest in developing new satellite cities in Dhaka, since they are always looking for new countries to invest in. This housing boom on top of the new infrastructure projects would create a ton of new jobs, allowing many of the people coming to Dhaka from the countryside to find sustainable, worthwhile, and better paying jobs. The expansion of housing development and the improvements in infrastructure would also greatly reduce traffic and overcrowding.
3. Attract foreign capital to Dhaka: Many cities in Southeast Asia are currently experiencing economic booms. Multinational corporations are flocking to these places left and right to spend their money on new projects or set up regional headquarters. Bangladesh is trying to get into the information technology, software, and pharmaceutical industries, so why not attract multinational corporations in these industries to set up regional branches or headquarters in Dhaka? This will allow billions of dollars to flow into the Bangladeshi economy and lead to the construction of skyscrapers and modern architecture, which will help to beautify the city. Bangladesh should continue to expand its manufacturing industry, although better working conditions will be needed to keep this industry running properly.
4. Liberalize socially and improve the lifestyle: Although it is more liberal than most other predominantly Muslim countries, Bangladesh is still overall a very conservative country. Although sharia law isn't implemented on the national level, it still very much influences the culture of Bangladesh, and there have been some recent incidents of Islamization in Bangladesh. This is highly detrimental to Bangladesh's economy as well as its potential to become a new hotspot of investment and trade. People like to have fun, and life isn't fun when you're constantly held back by oppressive laws and norms. Look at Saudi Arabia for example. Sure, it's a very wealthy country, but there is no religious freedom at all and clubs and nightlife are completely banned as a result of the country's strict interpretation of Islamic law. Non-Muslims such as myself are not even allowed to tour the famous mosques in Mecca and Medina, so really, what is there for tourists to do in Saudi Arabia? The Saudi economy is solely based on oil. The UAE on the other hand has liberalized and although it still has sharia law, it's to a much less extent than Saudi Arabia, and the UAE has been able to become one of the most visited countries in the world as a result. Bangladesh should follow suit and protect the rights of religious minorities as well as women, and hopefully the LGBT community can be protected eventually as well.
Better shopping malls, grocery stores, apartments, parks, recreation centers, movie theaters, clubs, and concert venues should be built. Bangladesh also has a booming sex industry, which if regulated can be a major money making industry. I personally believe that Dhaka could benefit from having a big sex industry since it doesn't have the major tourist attractions or cultural heritage sites that draw thousands of foreigners to other cities across Asia each year. Besides, Bangladeshi women are beautiful, and I'm sure many foreigners would pay good money to have sex with a Bangladeshi girl or find a Bangladeshi girlfriend or wife. If the government cracks down on underage prostitution and human trafficking and regulates brothels and sexual services, the sex industry could end up playing a major role in the Bangladeshi economy. Sex tourism is sleazy, but it also makes a lot of money, and could help Bangladesh to stand out. The establishment of strip clubs could also help this industry prosper. Cox's Bazar, the gem of Bangladesh, should be transformed into a major resort town with posh hotels, restaurants, bars, and clubs.
5. Uphold the rule of law: This is a major issue in Bangladesh. Human rights and the rule of law are not widely respected. The government is very corrupt, women are treated as second-class citizens, and religious minorities face widespread persecution which is tantamount to genocide. Although the country is officially secular, there is still a widespread tolerance for Islamic extremism. Women who reject marriage proposals and sexual advances are frequently disfigured with acid. Bangladesh has the most number of acid attacks in the world per capita. Also, Islamic fundamentalist groups such as ISIS and Al-Qaeda have been committing terrorist attacks in Bangladesh in recent years. This all needs to change if Bangladesh is to globalize. The government should crack down on corruption, prevent abuses of human rights, end the culture of impunity, and use their resources to fight terrorism. Security should be improved, and open displays of Islamic extremism and political fanaticism should also be banned. Human rights and the rule of law must always be respected and upheld.
5. Create a skilled workforce: One of the main reasons for Bangladesh's poverty is the severe lack of education in the country. Many kids live on the streets and beg rather than go to school, or quit school early to go to work. This is an issue, as it continues the cycle of poverty in Bangladesh. The government should see to it that every child remains in school until they finish high school. Higher education should be more widely encouraged and accessible. These improvements will lead to a more skilled and educated workforce, which will in turn raise living standards.
This is my five points for prosperity plan. To me, ideology is irrelevant, the only thing that matters is results. All of this CAN be done, it just takes the right governance.

Dhaka, and Bangladesh in general, show great promise in becoming major players in the South Asian region. However, I think if they work on two fronts in particular, their path to prosperity can really pull through. Those two fronts are: infrastructure and mobilization of the Bangladeshis.
In terms of infrastructure, Bangladesh needs to find ways to ensure future stability in the face of climate change while developing in environmentally sustainable ways. There's opportunity in Bangladesh, because it has so much of what is a very precious resource: water. So, flood protection, flood gates, and rainwater harvesting systems-like those being developed in Germany-as well as waterproof architectural infrastructure and high capacity sewage/water rehabilitation networks, are projects that Bangladesh can work on. Furthermore, it ought to work on roads and internal transport networks, _while also_ ensuring that these are sustainable against floods. Within Dhaka, public transportation projects are a good way to relieve congestion and introduce clean energy in an effective way that people will make use of. Vegetation is also a very important way of conserving water and preventing runoff, and it helps for beautification and tackling pollution. In architecture, developing structures that can take heavy rainfall without eroding, and that can maybe even capture high amounts of it are the way to go. Furthermore, encourage local growth and consolidation of nearby urban areas to form new cities and towns to relieve population pressure from Dhaka. Once an infrastructural threshold has been established, even the poorest of Bangladesh will have at least systems in place that give them a base quality of life; even something as simple as a pump that filters water, and a windmill that provides electricity in every village can drastically improve quality of life. If Bangladesh can learn to harness its greatest challenge-water-that challenge may just become Bangladesh's greatest asset, especially as water becomes more and more of an issue globally; water can be Bangladesh's oil.
As for the people, Bangladesh needs to orientate them and provide them the means to achieve national success. Obviously, the infrastructural changes will help them, but it's not enough. A mass literacy program, especially adult literacy and early childhood education, ought to be the aim-get everyone under the age of 60 to be able to read in the national language. This helps to make communication easier across the country, helps to increase the mobility of the population, makes civil engagement and general societal engagement easier, and reinforces a sense of national belonging. This can become easier with better infrastructure, as it makes it easier for people to move around, and thus easier for instructors and tutors to reach rural communities. As more become literate, it only becomes easier to go up from there. Institute health and civic order campaigns-methods of mundane governance-to regularize people's actions, such as how and where to dispose of trash and which kind, how to treat water, how to maintain infrastructure, how to prevent diseases, how to fix broken water pumps, etc. At the same time, develop these facilities-recycling, water treatment/natural gas systems to provide boiling capacities to houses, sanitary facilities, and a healthcare system that can provide necessary vaccinations-to make the transition from a primarily rural society to a primarily urban and developed society even faster. Campaigns to reduce the birth rate have been very successful in Bangladesh, so a mass mobilization of the Bangladeshi people _can_ be done. If possible, once a basic near-universal literacy has been reached, start vamping up education in general; reform and revitalize elementary schools, high schools, and universities if necessary. Perhaps even put a focus on growing engineering to produce the minds that will create these changes.
A lot of social issues can be solved just with education, but education is affected by a variety of issues. The problem is that these cannot be treated in isolation; in order to effectively tackle these issues, they must be understood as an interrelated nexus and taken on at once. They cannot be treated one at a time, but in tandem. And of course this assumes that the government always acts benevolently, and it doesn't. But the path to prosperity _is_ within reach; Bangladesh _can_ thrive, it just has to play its cards _very_ smartly.

Interesting video. Never been to Bangladesh myself but I think in order to take on the huge challenges, they need to take the following measures:
First, the city (and state) need to reorganize themselves soon so that there is 1 government that efficiently can implement the necessary changes. Whether this will be democratic or not, is not the most pressing concern since time (climate change) is not on their side.
Secondly, for the rising sea levels, they can look at the Dutch system and try to implement the most cost efficient measures and try to combat these issues. But since they have such limited funds this is an utopian dream I fear.
Thirdly, they could try to diversify their economy. Instead of being the clothing manufacturer of the world, maybe government could think more long term (as I presume cloth manufacturing is an industry that will be robotized soon)

It also needs Land Value Tax. It needs investment in infrastructure. Any surpluses should be distributed as a Citizen's Dividend to pre-empt them from being used for patrimonial/nepotistic/rentier purposes.
Licensing would be a step backwards. The economy does not need more barriers to entry.

My first thought, given the flooding and sanitation needs, is that each citizen and immigrant needs to learn a few things about building up wastewater and aqueduct infrastructure, so when the need arises to organize a project, the necessary labor is readily available. Sure, electricity is important as well, but it's a lower priority. You can't very well provide a neighborhood with electricity when that neighborhood is flooded.

Really? o.o i am from Dhaka (parents from hooghly in WB) but i can understand the kolkata dialect just fine, seems normal just slightly more formal like eshun, instead of asho but i can't understand people from Sylhet or Chittagong AT ALL.

Nope. The number of active young people will decrease dramatically and inactive Olds will remain the same/will increase by time. needs a sustained and controlled rate of decline. If you are ready to go inhuman, then decreasing the gross lifespan is an option as well. Needs to overhaul the entire study system so that young people can join the workforce earlier then they can now(and be more efficient as well).... and probably, export population on a bigger scale(as workforce mainly).
