  • Three solid days of rain in North Carolina means a LOT of mud. So our friends the Rhodes called us in to help move their pigs out of their muddy paddock and into a cleaner space. Also, Day 4 of our Whole30!

I keep thinking how cool it is that y’all have become friends with the Rhodes. I remember the vlog you filmed when going to the meet up in California and where so excited to meet them. Now you are friends close enough for them to call you for help! So cool! It is also fun watching their vlog and then your vlog about the same event. Same event- different perspectives. 😃 Enjoying your journey.

That salad looked so good and made me want some too! Would love to know how you made the dressing. I love sesame oil so I'm sure it bumped up the flavor to be over the top! I bet the Rhodes family were so thankful you all were available to come help! I live over the mtn from Asheville in TN and this deluge of rain is the worst I've ever seen in my 65 yrs. Flooding is all around and seems endless. See ya next time!

I think that often a lot of the issues people have with the brassica family is that they usually have had them as kids when they were over cooked. Once you start eating them raw, and stir fried, or steamed the whole taste changes. We eat loads of cabbage, and it's one of our go to veg. It's cheap, but packed with goodness :) Would go fantastic with those pigs, garlic, and walnuts

Plus, the knowledge that Justin has and your creative mind, together, with the strength and love you both have for a better way of living, you two could get so many chores done and building things. Thinking up easy and new working techniques, plus the boys all working together and play time!!!!! Wow! The beautiful ladies and the awesome food they prepare and the love for a better way of eating.......so much in my mind! And you could still look for your homestead while having the time of your lives. My family enjoys all your videos and the Rhodes videos too. Thank you, thank you for sharing your lives with all of us. Love and Blessings from Texas!

@@TheHollarHomestead I wonder if there's a way for a natural composting sewer system on a larger scale to build, like the composting toilets, but bigger and using the compost only on flower beds. I enjoyed all the food shots.
I used to enjoy the time of year when the frost came out of the ground in New Hampshire. This time of year I would have three bred sows. I could bring them out from under the barn and start moving them daily in the woods. I would move them frequently enough so they would not do a deep tilling, but would just churn up the top of the forest floor in our sugar bush. Moving pigs about in the woods takes longer than on open ground. But as the days get longer and gardening has not yet started I found there was more time in the day. Often I would take my saw to where I had the pigs, especially on a rainy day. I would have a fire going, burning the limbs and brush I had cut. The pigs like the fire.
Justin never wears a hooded sweatshirt on the rain. I found I can work in most weather as long as my neck is covered.
Back in my day ( I was born in 1951) we didn't have TH-cam Facebook and texting. I was pretty well isolated on my little 36-acre farm. Moving the pigs was a solo chore.
I enjoyed your TH-cam, I found it via Justin Rhode's channel watching about moving the pigs from the quagmire. When I was new to pigs I allowed my pigs to stay too long in one spot during this time of year. I learned quickly that it is far better to move them to fresh ground before they make it a mess you can't get them out of.

I got the best organic dried unadulterated Bing Cherries to add to my Gorp jar. I heard that a tasty protein bar called RXbar is W~30 compliant. I checked it out and it looks quite pure. Then I ate one (blueberry) and they are delicious! Definitely meant for an occasional snack or emergency meal but the taste is outa this world. Are you guys hiding this delicacy from us?? 😉 I’m also a big fan of cabbage and stirfry it almost daily. So I start the W~30 for real on the 1st and will also add my photos to IG! there is cheap land in Quaker city ohio---as this is in the middle of the oil wells--many are selling cheap--and to build a home would be cheap----no sure how many homesteaders are here-but there is many amish and Mennonites that would be a big resource ---land is about 2000-3000 per acre---

weather i am moving my pigs or my steers in 5 feet of snow, i dont feed them for 12 hours, and they will all follow me were ever i go as long as i have a pail in hand, in the summer the pigs are rooting in the woods so no need to move them, i just drop one wire and they move on deeper into the woods on there own, pig are motivated by food witch make moving them by your self very simple... the hardest part is to get them to cross were the 12 inch high one wire electric wire was, that can take some time, once yo get them to cross the rest is nothing, in the winter that one wire is under 5 feet of snow, but they make there trail 5 to 10 feet out from were they know that wire was, as shown in my videos
