I always smile with your videos, we have so much in common. My husband is a blacksmith/knifemaker. I am a spinner, Weaver, soapmaker and long time homestead nut. We have a stove and sink like that out back, our kitchen has a double sink/double drainboard. I just treated myself to a Griswold tall base waffle maker for my birthday that I have been drooling over for several months. I had really hoped that you would have chosen Missouri, our place would have been a good fit for your family when we downsize. The only downfall, is no Whole Foods or Lowe's/Home Depot without a bit of a drive. Next time you need a fun day go to Chimney Rock. By the way, Asheville is one of my favorite places!
Seeing a young family making plans to live a life on their own terms is really terrific, positive, and uplifting! Especially in times like ours with so much negativity in the media, politics taking over the national discussion, and everything we kinda take for granted being sloshed about and nearly drowned in the muck and mire or defeatism and cynicism. I've had friends who found their property by just driving around, seeing some place that they liked, and looking into the property. Sometimes they were available and didn't have any signs, other times they looked up land records and found who owned the property and asked them if they'd be willing to sell. Work hard & play hard, it keeps life in balance. 😁
Hi there here in Britain we have antiques galore and loads of charity shops there really big here. And do very well you got a bargain with that waffle maker. And munchi is adorable happy searching.

I love places like that antique store. You just never know what you'll find there. When I moved to this house I needed all new bedroom furniture, but I really don't like modern stuff, so my things spent a while in stuff I'd moved them in. I was still training horses at the time, and had a yard with several horses that I went to twice a week a few towns over. They have some great antique shops along the way, and one is right on a crossroads at a set of lights, just before the yard. One day I pull up as the lights turn red, look at the shop's huge glass windows, and there was the replica shabby chic louis XV furniture I'd been thinking about. Sometimes we just have to be in the right place at the right time :)
That is a much bigger town than I thought it was. How fun, and it is important to have balance you young folks lol. And a gosh darn coffee shop. Hey that’s the topper. Pizza and hot wings wow. Asheville is quite the little metropolitan area in the mountains. It's where loads of people travel to for shopping (myself included). Looks like they've just barely skimmed the surface of Asheville. There's a lot to see in the area.

My Daddy is a car guy and some of his favorite memories are from the car trips he took across the. Unfortunately he has Parkinson's which severely limits his ability to travel. Other wise we would be traveling to country checking out old cars with him. Your travels remind me of the story's he used to tell me about when he was younger. Blessed Be! LOVE the sink!!! When we remodeled our kitchen, an old cast iron sink was my 1 splurge. I absolutely love that thing!!!! It was a real beast to get in place, though, cause it weighs an absolute ton and my hubby had to build a support underneath it inside of the cabinet. Wow look at that Victorian pink house. Wow that is cool old cast iron stove, Love the sink as well. I so want a old cook stove!! love Antiques favorite thing to do. I sure would have love that sink for a outside kitchen or greenhouse. Ben put it in a camp fire and let it cool down and steel wool works good. We have a lot of Cast iron, I have never heard of that cleaner. Let us know how it works, we a have a lot Wagner, Griswold, Lodge, some say USA on it. Love our cast iron.

Living Traditions Homestead has a easy video of sawhorses we used it's super easy and Vinegar will remove rust from cast iron too but takes a few applications.😘

That's the exact edition of the book that I have!! Yep, 1994 is when I got mine :). Great book! Chocked full of almost everything you need to know for homesteading.
I wish I had known..I have a griswold cast iron waffle iron. I never use it. It was given to me when a lady gave me a 1904 Monarch Malliable stove. Had I known, I would have sent it to you in a heartbeat!! Anyway, I'm glad you were able to add to your collection!! So fun to see you guys doing well!!
You all should visit the River Arts District. The Antique Barn over on River Road (the connector between Biltmore Village and Tunnel Road) sounds like something you'd enjoy. It's been a long time since I've went in there, but I pass by often.
Awesome! The wife and do the same thing. We go to all the thrift and antique shops. We have found some useful items that help us preserve our harvest. Like a nesco dehydrator, mason jars, food saver vac, and a presto canner. Awesome score on that waffle maker. You should post a video on the results of it's restoration.

I wanted to mention also to check out the Grove Park Inn. Historic hotel in Ashville. We went there about gosh, 10 years ago. It was christmas and they had a gingerbread house contest and all the lights and trees were up but regardless its beautiful any time of year. The view out the huge glass windows overlooking the lawn and mountains beyond are breathtaking! Not sure of the story but They say it's haunted.
I also went Antiquing today over in Charlotte. I like to reduce, reuse, recycle as much as I can and what a better way to do that than at an Antique store

Aw man I missed the giveaway, no internet right now really stinks 🙄....I used to have one of those sinks, my dad used it to clean fish with outside. Then I used it as my kitchen sink when I bought my first fixer-upper. The waffle iron is awesome as well.
The waffle Iron looks great. Take that with you when you go to other homesteads, what a great conversation starter and a way to make a unique meal. I could just see the wives in the kitchen making whole food waffles.
Love that waffle iron. 💕 I just got a very rusty old cast iron dutch oven that I've been dreading cleaning up. Glad to know about that that rust remover. 😊😊 can't wait to see how your waffle iron comes out.
Look for the habitat for humanity and some of the salvage yards too. We do the Asheville crawl ever so often. My husband goes to the Asheville VA so we love to prowl.
Ahhhh what a good book! That's the one that started it all for me... it was the one that made me realize that homesteading was a "thing" and I could do it. I already have the book so don't need it but wanted to just add how much I love it!

My mom gave it to me as a gift after my oldest daughter was born - I have vivid memories of sitting reading it for hours as she slept on my lap, I was so completely absorbed in it. She (my mom) had actually bought the first edition book from Carla when she used to travel around doing presentations selling it, she said it was just one of those homemade books with the plastic binding and a paper cover back then.
It's really fun to see these places with you. We have been around these places too. Be sure to check out the WBC farmers market and Smileys flee market. There is a great restaurant at the farmers market called the Moose Cafe. Their biscuits are to die for.
Glad you enjoy antique stores. They are dying left and right, most younger folks have no interest in old stuff. As a previous antique mall owner, most of my customers were 60-80 yrs old and they were all collected out and trying to sell their collections of stuff almost no one wants. Glad your showing younger people that there's neat stuff to be found.
Oh, man, I SO want a sink like that, but a double one, ok if drainboard only one side but both is good too ( ah... I'm a messy, splashy, Dishwasher no matter how careful i try to be 🙄) ! I love to peruse antique/vintage shops just for something fun to do, too ! Basically that & going to areas of natural interest to hike or view, are the things my husband n I do. He doesnt like the antique store things as much, but i didnt use to have any friends that lived close enough to do stuff w me spur of moment, n hes a good sport to do it once in a while, esp. If there's "guy stuff" in there. Hope y'all feel really refreshed !
Asheville is.such a cool city! I went to college in Swannanoa, a long long time ago, but I still remember and LOVE that city. Check out Wall Street, the Fresh Market, Bill Stanley's BBQ.
I strongly suggest taking the trolly tour around town. they tell you about the places you pass and it teaches what is where very quickly. you get 2 days of use per ticket pass and you get off and on the trolley where & when you want.
easiest way to get air out of a ziplock type bag is to almost close the bag then gently submerge it in a bowl of water which will push the air out, then seal the last bit of the bag

You can use vinegar to get that all off. I've done it but it soaks for about a week, then use a brush and it is clean,and beautiful.

I saw some old hay bale hooks in the antique store. We used those when I was 12 and working with horses in the Berkeley Hills!

Salt or sand will help with the cleaning of old cast iron and bringing it back to life. Appreciate the product testing of the modern cleanser though.

Being a blacksmith I deal with rust... A lot... Distilled white vinegar... Soak iron in it for a few days and then brush the rusty schmutz off

Evaporust is wonderful for removing rust. It will remove rust on ironware. I use it for removing rust on my sewing machines.

Aw man I missed the giveaway, no internet right now really stinks 🙄....I used to have one of those sinks, my dad used it to clean fish with outside. Then I used it as my kitchen sink when I bought my first fixer-upper. The waffle iron is awesome as well.

The waffle Iron looks great. Take that with you when you go to other homesteads, what a great conversation starter and a way to make a unique meal. I could just see the wives in the kitchen making whole food waffles.

Look for the habitat for humanity and some of the salvage yards too. We do the Asheville crawl ever so often. My husband goes to the Asheville VA so we love to prowl.

Ahhhh what a good book! That's the one that started it all for me... it was the one that made me realize that homesteading was a "thing" and I could do it. I already have the book so don't need it but wanted to just add how much I love it!
Back when I fell into homesteading, I checked it out from the library FOUR times before I finally realized I need to just buy it. 😂
@@TheHollarHomestead LOL! Yeah I'd take that as a sign for sure. My mom gave it to me as a gift after my oldest daughter was born - I have vivid memories of sitting reading it for hours as she slept on my lap, I was so completely absorbed in it. She (my mom) had actually bought the first edition book from Carla when she used to travel around doing presentations selling it, she said it was just one of those homemade books with the plastic binding and a paper cover back then.
It's really fun to see these places with you. We have been around these places too. Be sure to check out the WBC farmers market and Smileys flee market. There is a great restaurant at the farmers market called the Moose Cafe. Their biscuits are to die for.
I've found some of the most useful things at antique shops! That waffle iron is so cool. I've never come across one like that.
I have one of those waffle irons. They are great. We have an all electric stove so don't use the ring unless we are camping out. You will love it.

Glad you enjoy antique stores. They are dying left and right, most younger folks have no interest in old stuff. As a previous antique mall owner, most of my customers were 60-80 yrs old and they were all collected out and trying to sell their collections of stuff almost no one wants. Glad your showing younger people that there's neat stuff to be found.
We LOVE antique stores!! Old stuff really makes us happy, and we love knowing something had a story.
Oh, man, I SO want a sink like that, but a double one, ok if drainboard only one side but both is good too ( ah... I'm a messy, splashy, Dishwasher no matter how careful i try to be 🙄) ! I love to peruse antique/vintage shops just for something fun to do, too ! Basically that & going to areas of natural interest to hike or view, are the things my husband n I do. He doesnt like the antique store things as much, but i didnt use to have any friends that lived close enough to do stuff w me spur of moment, n hes a good sport to do it once in a while, esp. If there's "guy stuff" in there. Hope y'all feel really refreshed !
Asheville is.such a cool city! I went to college in Swannanoa, a long long time ago, but I still remember and LOVE that city. Check out Wall Street, the Fresh Market, Bill Stanley's BBQ.

Antique shops are so much fun !!
I strongly suggest taking the trolly tour around town. they tell you about the places you pass and it teaches what is where very quickly. you get 2 days of use per ticket pass and you get off and on the trolley where & when you want.

easiest way to get air out of a ziplock type bag is to almost close the bag then gently submerge it in a bowl of water which will push the air out, then seal the last bit of the bag
