      If you're an undergrad Adam then you really don't need to stress all that much. To say that undergrad history courses are a joke is an understatement. They don't go into detail on anything, just a general overview of major events and personalities. We spent maybe three hours on the entirety of the Roman era, for example, all the way from the beginning of the Republic to the end of the Empire. We never even went over the Muslim-Sassanid conflicts either, just a general overview of Muhammad's beginnings and his eventual conquest of the Arabian peninsula.

      They might have done some scouting ahead in front of them and follow the Muslim army but didn't expect them to be in that ridge, since it is considered in their side and the muslims probably sneaked there at night.

      Many reasons often different from one instance to the next. Overall though advanced battlefield maneouvers are very difficult and require a well disciplined core of veteran soldiers. We talk about the times it worked because it leads to these stunning victories that reshape history but we don't talk about the thousands of times it failed. A feigned retreat can very quickly turn into a real retreat and looks like one from an observers perspective so many attempts never even get recognized as what they were. Also the general knowledge of tactics and strategy that we enjoy simply didn't exist back then, they relied mostly on the experience of veterans to teach young leaders and the efficacy of this varies wildly. Lastly as you pointed out Reconnaissance was generally underrated. Rome was famously bad at scouting for several centuries as their noble born cavalry felt that scouting missions were beneath their status.

    • @wintersking4290
      @wintersking4290 3 ปีที่แล้ว +57

      Remember messages and scouting reports had to brought manually back to the commanders and by the time they arrived there was a good chance the enemy had moved again. Communications weren't always anywhere near as fast as they are now.

      A feigned retreat proposes a wager to enemy. Put yourself in the shoes of the Persians,they were getting grinded for like ages by the Caliphate. They were on defensive and destabilised. They needed something to turn the tables, something like a decisive victory. See how hard it would to leave alone enemy unscathed which could have been destroyed? Even if you consider the risks of a Feigned retreat,the temptation of the possibility of great victory can overwhelm you .It has happened many times in history a Victory fell short of being decisive because of caution. These are the moments which differentiate a good General from a Great one.

It was also the time the armies of Islam defeated and crushed two world superpowers into the dust. The reason behind his success was his fair and just treatment of his people and his prolific governance and administration. He was kind to his people and strict with his governors. He lived a stoic life and made sure that people in his government avoided materialism and excess wealth. Islam would never have been powerful if it didn't have a ruler like Umar I.

Our Muslim civilisation is a product of the cross-fertilization of the Semitic and the Aryan ideas. It is a child who inherits the softness and refinement of his Aryan mother, and the sterling character of his Semitic father. But for the conquest of Persia, the civilisation of Islam would have been one-sided. The conquest of Persia gave us what the conquest of Greece gave to the Romans."

Albeit his decisions were sometimes controversial (e.g. Khalid recalled from military duty), it's always based on logic that unstopable military machine like him might have gained fanatic supporters unintentionally (khalid wasn't known as political man unlike Mu'awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan) if let loose for too long despite his contributions for Islam. That decision also opening up for another officers to shine. Truly, Islamic government was at its peak military and administration under Umar ibn Khatthab Radiyallahu 'Anhu.

    The strategy of this battle and every step is just a masterpiece. The 2nd half of it involving the trap could not have been possible without the 1st two failed human waves which made the Persians actually fall for the trap, and unable to consider the possibility Muslims could flip the table around (which they ended up doing). Even on the brink of losing and the odds against em, the Muslims still managed to turn it around at the last second for a decisive victory. Absolutely incredible that the Persians were taken down in this manner. A 20 year war with the eastern Romans and a civil war literally right before the Muslims arrived put the Sassanids at an all-time low and constituted right place, right time for the Muslims for sure. But still, they were taking on the two superpowers of the western world at the same time and won both. Crazy.
    After this battle, the last Persian Shah roamed around from region to region trying to drum up support but was turned down at every point. Irán had devolved into a territory of warlords governing small kingdoms in Kazakhstan, Persia, and Central Asia. The Muslims would pick them off one by one. Yazdegerd eventually fled northeast into Turkic land and further to China. He was killed in Central Asia by a miller, in an armed robbery. So ended the great Persian Sassanid Empire.

      The fact that the Persians fell in this trap proves how genuine the tactic and scenario created by the Muslims during that battle was. You can't judge until you are in an exact situation suffering an equal stress and fear of loss. You know emotions play a key role in how someone decides right? After weeks of waiting for a chance to be victorious, plus the circumstances during which you are clashing with your enemies with death looking you in the eyes, you don't have the time to sit back and ponder on all previous mistakes, especially when they didn't occur many times. The thing is they didn't expect the Muslims to come with such a tactic especially when the Persians were sure of their manpower and tactic. It's the same as how an ambush works. You march with your warriors into a valley and suddenly get surrounded and attacked from all hidden sides.
      But, there are tactics to prevent such situations though. For example, the battle of Uhud, in which the Messenger of Allah Salallahu 'Alaihi Wassallam ordered a few archers to stand on a hill to prevent the enemy to go around the mountain and attack from the back. He Salallahu 'Alaihi Wassallam ordered them to not come down even if birds are picking on their dead bodies. But after the enemy retreaded some of the archers came down to collect the spoils of war. So Khalid Ibn Al Walid (Radyallahu' Anh) who at that time wasn't a Muslim yet, he saw this happening and ordered his cavalry to go around the hill and attack the Muslims from the back. So this is a genuine deffence tactic that can prevent attacks from the back if followed correctly.

      @سعيد صالح o cmon khalid conquered entire Arabian peninsula once again after the rebellion of the murtads and Iraq only in a year and half then he was sent to the Byzantine front.
      After he left for the Levant, the Muslims were apprehensive to fight the persians since khalid ra was not around. So Umar ra had to order the armies to retreat and leave the conquered lands for a year or two after a long pause Saad bin waqqas ra was sent to reconquer the areas that khalid ra has already conquered.
      Regarding hand to hand combat Ali ra was the best in this business no one could ever beat him period. He killed Amr ibn Abd ud whom the sahabas were afraid in combating at the battle of trench. When Holy Prophet saww called the sahabas to fight against Amr every time it was Ali ra to respond no doubt he was the bravest of them all.

      The 1st generation of Muslims were just smarter, hence how they conquer so quickly so fast. Most of their victories were decisive that also has profound and long lasting psychological effects on their opponents. Imagine losing to people who you not only outnumber and are technologically/economically superior to. It makes you think God is genuinely on their side, and it's impossible for a mortal like you to win against that. Hence why many of them just joined Islam to be on the winning side. (and the fact that Byzantine/Sassanid leaders were incompetent's added to that)
