@@NotechisMusic Some blades, if well forged, survive the strength test with minimal damage if any. That's the point. Whether you're cutting into bone or something hard in a real world use of the knife, the strength test is meant to recreate that kind of potential impact and damage and to see if it still cuts well after that damage is done. If it can take a beating in the strength test and it can cut well (or at all) then the blade is pretty well made. There would be no point to testing the cut first. If the strength test snaps the blade, then it's a useless blade.
This test is important, cuz you know we all have those times when mercilessly beating a fastened deer antler is the only thing between you and certain death.
Before anyone commenting how the strength test destroy the blade for the subsequent test, you should know it was meant to. Some took more damage, others hold up pretty well. So clearly you can tell which blacksmith has more skills, better design, etc.
John-Paul Silke the knives on the first phase of the show dont worth a lot, at least onthis episode, theyhave to rush them to finish so no detail work done on them 🤷♂️
Agreed but they are made by extremely skilled professionals who probably are in the $50+ hourly for their workmanship with minimum charges in the 4-6hr range. Even rough and undecorated and unfinished they are valuable. But absolutely they are rushed so far from their best work.
I guys you could say it also couldn't cut it in this competition, The other blades were a cut above his, I hope the judges comment about his blade didn't cut to deep. Shame he got cut from the competition. Hmmm do you want my to do what that blade couldn't and cut it out.
It looked to me like the warping caused on the strength test made the third blade liable to catching on the meat, hence why it seemed Doug had to pull harder. The second had no edge at all. No way to slice like a proper knife.
Has anyone ever made a winning San Mai on this show? I'm referring more to the final round challenge. Who has used the San Mai technique for their final weapon?
I don't think anyone has done a true San Mai for their final weapon purely because of the time it takes to make that style work, but there's been some either emergency San Mais or San Mai-esque blades turned in
That's kinda the point. You stress test the blade to see how well it was forged. Some blades in this show are put through the strength test and survive with minimal damage or none at all and still cut like it was just sharpened.
@@gerardmourits8709 just like the man said depending on how it was made it can cut just fine. I mean people on this show have had blades slammed into solid metal and they still cut beautifully with minimal dmg
Don't know if that would have helped the other to blade took far more damage to the blade surface the the second blade and they still cut like champs. The second blade it's self was just blunt to start with even the person who crafted it said he made it to blunt.

He tried way harder on the third guy then the second guy on the sharpness test
Katie Carney highkey
If it was actually *sharp* it wouldn't need to be forced and pushed very hard into the piece that was being sliced .
He only tried hard when the blade hung up on the roll. The second blade didn't have an edge at all. It didn't score the skin at all.
It looked to me like the warping caused on the strength test made the third blade liable to catching on the meat, hence why it seemed Doug had to pull harder.
The second had no edge at all. No way to slice like a proper knife.
Do you people even know the reason for the tests? They do the strength test first to see if the blade is able to retain an edge.

The suspense music connects with the guy's noises

“ your blade did not make the cut” puns included?
The first time I've seen a piece of ham beat a knife
Looks like all had heat treat issues and weld issues. So whens the bbq?

Doug-It will keel
The rolled up edge that’s freaking soft hon sanmai is tricky to heat treat it will open up or it ended up soft as a mild steel

Always feels like they expect a blade to take no damage from an antler, something evolved to smash things to bits.
Why don’t they do the cutting test before the strength test? It makes more sense to allow the blade to perform at its best.
First time I heard him say "It will not cut".
Plz do first the sharp test
Butter knife mike.
Did i hear a lightsaber????
This guy pressed harder on the last guys blade and barely dragged the second competitors across the ham. 🤔
He wasn't pressing harder on the third blade, there was just more drag due to the edge rolling over while chopping the bone.

Or did he kill his family
Why would you concentrate on making a knife with a blunt edge? The whole point of a knife is a sharp cutting tool.
Who ever thought concentrating on making a blade dull would be a vinning strategy?
Next try a whippy Epee or Foil?
This judge is unfair. He goes way beyond to purposely destroy anything in his hand.
The antler test is not fair..I suggest to use a piece of railroad...
He made his blade dull to survive the strength test? Maybe I need to see the unedited version of this episode to see how that makes sense.
Wait do this is a legit case it will not kill? Not even cut? He must have improvised when he realized the one line it will can’t be used.
What kind of metal did they use? I've seen tougher kitchenware sold in Walmart
All about the heat treatment of the steel. A skilled smith knows heat treatment very well and can make a blade that's hard but not brittle.

Not that that's a knife made for stabbing either. At this point, all it can do is spread some butter.
