I just got the a6500, have never done serious photography, and found this video to be so helpful. I didn't understand any of the acronyms or settings on my camera, but now I feel like I know what I'm looking at--and I didn't even have to read the manual. Thanks!

Hey Tony! I stumbled on your videos while trying to make the decision between the Canon M5, the Sony a6300 and the a6500. Your videos are clear, concise, while also being super thorough and really professionally presented. I can't thank you enough for work you've done. You REALLY empowered me to make an informed leap before my wife and baby and I take a trip down the California coast. After 12+ years shooting Canon DSLRs, but about 2 years yearning for a smaller form factor & mobile editing abilities, you helped me confidently purchase and are really getting me up to speed on what I need to be able to successfully shoot on my trip in two weeks.
Sincere thanks for this fantastic content. I'm going to make a decision really soon about which of your paid products I'm most interested in buying to support you and Chelsea. All the best, and happy shooting!

I have just bought an A6500 & was looking for a video run through of the camera. Thank you so much for your tutorial - it is excellently done & exactly what I wanted.
There is a lot of stuff on youtube, but clear & well thought out tutorials are at a premium, & you have hit the spot dead centre. I will be returning to the video again & again as I familiarise myself with my new camera. I have already learned heaps, including I might add, the purpose of a couple of settings on my old Canon superzoom which I've had for the past 9 years! Great stuff.

I just took the A6500 w/ F4 16-70 lens on a week long trip to Iceland. I took 1500 pictures and videos over 6 days and never used the second battery but was glad I had it. I was religious about switching the camera off when not shooting. I didn't find the startup time to be a problem, most of the time. I was apprehensive about the viewfinder location as I am left eye dominant. It occasionally became a problem with the touch screen when my nose touching the screen would move the focus point. I chose the 6500 over the A7RII for the smaller size as I though I would not second guess whether to carry it on hikes, etc.. Tony's advice was spot on about turning off the preview. It was just as easy to hit the play button if I wanted to see what I captured.

When I first got in to photography a good few years ago, I took a couple courses. But the instructors said don't turn off the camera, as the camera goes to sleep. When you ready to take a shot, just press the shutter down half way down and it'll go back on. Reason not to turn off camera is so you're always ready, don't need to waste time turning on the camera

Tony, this is an outstanding video. I have a long-term Canon DSLR background but, no previous experience with mirrorless. I have watched this video several times and
really enjoy that you have annotated the time frame for each subject.
I love the A6500 and tend to grab this camera instead of the Canon DSLR because of the weight and because it is simply (IMO) more fun to shoot.
I am a two camera guy but, in the interest of a lightweight kit, I plan to stick with Sony crop sensor cameras and I am waiting to see what Sony is going to put on the table with the upcoming crop sensor camera or cameras. If I like what they offer, I will get one. However if the price or some other factor turns me off, I will be happy with a second A6500 which this video has done a lot to help me master..

👍 on the video, but I gotta say, I’ve played with the flash a ton and I love angling it up with my left hand thumb and bouncing it off my hand at a 45-60 degree angle... now I get that’s seemingly ridiculous but give it a go, esp in B&W. Plus, if your lens is large and gets in the way of the flash this is a way around that.

excellent video as usual. fellow MA/New England shooter. Sony kinda is ruling, it really seems that way as an artist with a bunch of adapted experimental lenses. Use that Sigma adapter on the 150mm-600mm and prepare yourselves for the revolution. Also, using the zebra stripes for not just video but for Photography + the EVF. THAT is the game changer. Sony winning? Bought my A7 years ago just for this. You guys are pretty great. I own a recording studio in western MA. Clients include the favorite band of the Simpsons NRBQ, Peter Tork - the Monkees. I'm an anal audio guy who thoroughly appreciates your visual observations.

    Nice review.
However...I would have totally disagree with you on the focus beep.
I always tell my subjects (models, etc.) to LISTEN for the beep as an indicator that the camera has found focus and to 'strike her pose' before I push the button the rest of the way to take the shot.
This way I don't catch her off guard since she has the audio prompt from the beep to get ready for the shot.

Best part was the three pictures with the f-stop underneath and the picture of the aperture hole -- picture is worth a 1000 words! Touch screen on A6500 can't touch to go through the menus! I have a 10+ year old HandyCam video only camera made by Sony with a Touch screen that you CAN use to go through the menus? Why has it taken so long for camera makers to bring back the touch screens [that also flip around!] we had over 10 years ago?
