    Words are from Víglundar saga
    Stóðum tvö í túni.
    Tók Hlín um mig sínum
    höndum, hauklegt kvendi,
    hárfögr og grét sáran.
    Títt flugu tár um tróðu,
    til segir harmr um vilja.
    Strauk með drifhvítum dúki
    drós um hvarminn ljósa.
    Langúðig strauk lauðri
    líneik um skör mína.
    Því er mér enn til annars
    óbrátt höfuðþváttar.
    Öldungis skal engi
    Auði glæst hið næsta
    ein á aldri mínum
    asklaugar mér vaska.

    Does anyone know how old this melody is?

    • @hognigk96
      @hognigk96 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The song is thought to be written in the later half of the 14th c. (but it could be older). The origins of the melody are unknown but was preserved by rev. Bjarni Þorsteinsson, who collected Icelandic folk music in the late 19th and early 20th century. So it is at least 100-200 years old, but could very well be older.
      Hope that was informative :)

      @@hognigk96 Thanks for the info. Reminds me of how the tvísöngur tradition has links to rimur poetry from around the same time period. The preliterate/post-literate divide makes one wonder exactly how old this stuff really is.

    doez anyone have an accurate english translation for this? I can’t find information anywhere

    • @linusorri
      @linusorri 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      The band Ylja translate it like this on their bandcamp page:
      We stood together in the field the girl put around me
      her arm, the lovely lady,
      with her beautiful hair, and cried.
      The tears were streaming,
      the sorrow tells her will.
      She dried her eyes with a snow white cloth.
      Maiden, hear my verse,
      to recite with your lovely mouth.
      They might entertain you,
      girl, they really might,
      But when you look
      to the ocean, my Freyja,
      you will, my slender one, remember me.
